probably linux didnt mount the ntfs partition as read / write ... which is usual for live cds ... normally you could have deleted it from linux if you were using the ntfs-3g sub-system

You probably need to take ownership of the folder, and remove any 'limbo' permissions.

but surely if he booted into knoppix live cd there wont be any ownership issues since windows isnt even running??

I am not sure how NTFS does it exactly, but I have seen it happen. A 'scandisk' will probably fix it on second thought.

If the folder is not taking up any space, why not just leave it? If it is taking up space, can you delete the contents of it? Try that and see what is causing the access denied error.

The folder is 0 Byte. I've wanted to know it.

One solution, might not be what you are looking for, could be to just wipe the drive and reinstall. But, why do that if it is a pesky zero byte file/folder, no harm in letting it be.

I'll assume the folder path is c:\Recycler1
Open the parent folder in explorer. Right click Recycler1 and select properties. Select the Security tab.
Click Advanced and select the Owner tab. Select yourself as the owner, tick the checkbox for "Replace owner on subcontainers and object" and click "Ok" twice.
Open a command prompt.
Run ATTRIB -R -A -S -H C:\Recycler1 /S /D
try to delete: DEL C:\Recycler1 /S
If it's still not deletable you're probably having a file/folder with a filename that ends with a dot or a space or the file is being accessed by a program. But try this first.

I've had WinXp SP2 so I've not seen any Security tab or Owner tab

Is it Xp Home or Professional?
If you click on a file with the right mouse button and select properties from the context menu, which tabs do you have in the properties window that opens?

To see and unhide the Security tab:
Launch Windows Explorer.
Click on the Tools at the menu bar, then click on Folder Options.
Click on View tab.
In the Advanced Settings section at the bottom of the list, uncheck and unselect (clear the tick) on the “Use simple file sharing (Recommended)” check box.
Click OK.
BTW, if you use "Alt" + "Print Scrn" you copy only the active window to the Clipboard.
