It is good to see that CodeProject is well tied to windows development. I had enuff with Linux idiots.
Let me ask you a straight question to all the Linux.com users. Is linux good enuff?
First i hear that it is free software. We kno that enything free sucks. My office has free coffee which sucks. So Linux does suck. The software / installation / maintainance all sucks.
But windows xp / vista is very stable and secure. They have frequent releases of service packs and vital security updates. All because u pay for it. So i advice all Linux users to stop believing in free and buy Windows / MAC OS X. Let me know ur views on it

You couldn't be more wrong. XP and Vista are LESS stable; Linux has an advantage their because it is developed by a community of programmers who create it for a community. Linux is commonly regarded as more stable, but less "user-friendly" which is changing per each release.
And if Windows has more "service packs" and "vital security updates" isn't that due to the existence of so many security holes? Personally, I'm more comfortable with the OS that doesn't need to have a monthly day for updates.

I have been a windows admin for 12 years and a linux admin for 5 to 6. Software installation and maintenance is significantly simpler on linux than windows. I run a simple script from a putty window on my XP desktop that updates a dozen linux machines with no further user interaction after the password prompt. And this is all the software on the machine (> 400 applications / packages) not just the operating system. I do not believe windows will ever have this ability.

Hi i have downloaded some mp3 files from www.radioreloaded.com, i have shut down my system. When i have turned on my system and browse the folder with mp3 songs there is no file in that folder. I have faced this problem 2nd time. Please let me know is there any virus or something else. Thanks in advance.

My guess is that you have a worm on your computer. There are at least two I know about that destroys mp3files.
If that is the case your antivirus might need an upgrade. Until then you can use an online scanner[^]

Hi, I have read a document and found that if we add the registry key IPAutoconfigurationEnabled with a value of 0 (REG_DWORD data type), in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters it would be disable Automatic Private IP Address (APIPA). I ready follow an this instruction for testing but I still found the option of APIPA in property of the connection still be able to select (after I try to restart the computer to take an effect from the registry). Does any one know what is the cause of the problem that this setting does not have any effect?

OK. So your machine doesn't have a properly installed Java Runtime that LaunchAnywhere requires. I would suggest reinstalling the Java Runtime it needs.

I just installed a 1 TB external drive and am now trying to decide how to organize it. I already have a C, D, E, F, and G drive. I plan to transfer the content of these drives to the new one and reorganize things a bit.
The C drive I've tried to reserve to Windows, though some apps aren't courteous enough to allow this. I've been mostly successful in this. I plan to convert D, E, F, and G into dynamic volumes (which I've never tried) and merge them into a single drive for applications. The new drive I intend to use strictly for storage of data, if possible. The organization I plan is:
/Databases - for any DBs I use
/Documents - for any Word or Excel docs I use
/Drawings - for AutoCAD drawings
/Finance - for MS Small Business Accounting files, 401k activity downloads, etc
/Installations - for disk images used to install software on this machine or others on a network
/Maps - for ESRI ArcGIS data files and maps
/Media - for multimedia files
/.../Images - for photos and cartoons
/.../Music - for MP3s and the like
/.../Videos - for AVI, MOV, WMA files, etc.
/Projects - for development projects
/.../Applications - for programs
/.../Publications - for any documents created with Publisher or that ilk
/.../Websites - for website design files
/Schedules - for MSProject files
I can't think of what else I may need, but with this much space available I really need to get organized. So I guess I have three questions:
1. Will I run into a directory size limit with this structure using NTFS? Does NTFS have a limit?
2. Is there a better way to organize this drive?
3. Will I run into permissions issues if I install this drive on a new PC?
Your thoughts and suggestions will be appreciated...

I try to do this:
Windows system on a seperate physical drive. If that drive goes, I don't lose my data.
I then split a seperate drive in two, preferrably RAID 1 or better, and keep my applications and data seperated from each other on different partitions. Documents and Settings goes on this drive, along with all my installers.
For all library stuff, like photos and large databases, I try to use a third physical drive, RAID'd.

They are called Administrative shares[^].
They are there to allow people who already have local admin access to be able to access the pc.
They are not a security flaw. If a user on the network has local admin access to a PC there are plenty of other ways they could get on it if they wanted to. Disabling administrative shares will not block them.

I woke up this morning to a freshly rebooted server thanks to an MS update, and all of the sudden xcopy deploying updates to any asp.net application (website or web service) results in *every* asp.net web application reporting a compile error.
I tried editing the web.config (i.e. insert or delete some whitespace) in order to get asp.net to recompile/recache, but that only works 1/10 times. Deleting the entire asp.net cache doesn't even work. The only workaround I've found so far is a complete server reboot, which is, well, crap.
Anyone else experiencing this, or is it just our server that's gone all whacky today?

Haven't had the problems.
But a faster way than a server restart is to stop the application pool for erroneous app and delete the dotnet cache for the app and start the application pool again.
Personally I'm finding also this to be to much fuzz, so if someone else is having a better method I'm all ears

Well, it's not just us.. I got a skype call from an old sysad friend of mine who's got the exact same problem happening on 3 different continents since the last Server 2K3R2 update.
In his case, installing and re-installing the .net runtimes fixed the issues he had, but this unfortunately doesn't work for us. He is running asp.net code on netfx v1.1, v2.0, v3.0 and v3.5, whereas *all* of our code is compiled against netfx v3.5 (i.e. 2.0 + extensions), so not the same config.
However, we are now able to restore working service without rebooting by using NET STOP IISADMIN /Y followed by NET START W3SVC to force IIS to start over. I feel like I've just been time-warped 10 years into the past to the days of classic ASP and COM, *ugh*
This still means the every website, web service and the ftp service have to be killed any time we want to make even the most *minor* change to any of our hosted apps (which is crap), but at least we're not going down for 2-3 minutes, and DNS and mail can continue to function throughout it all.
Not a resolution, but at least a sloightly better work-around for us.

Hi,
I have a driver (.sys file) signed using verisign. But when I am loading that signed driver it is failing due to some of the local security policies i.e. UAC is enabled. If I disabled UAC then I am able to load driver.
As per microsoft user will not be able to load unsigned drivers. I would like to know what steps needs to be done in order to load signed drivers on Windows Vista with UAC enabled.

Only administrators can load new drivers, signed or otherwise. Whatever program is trying to load the driver must be running elevated. That means using a manifest to mark the program as requiring administrative rights, or another approach to cause the program or code to be elevated, such as the COM Elevation Moniker[^].
If you're using a Windows Installer package and using a custom action to load the driver, you will need to ensure that the custom action is not marked to Impersonate the active user. An Impersonated custom action will execute using the unprivileged token even if the user running the package belongs to the Administrators group. A non-impersonated action will run in the LocalSystem context.

I would like to know What is the significance of Admin Approval Mode in Windows Vista? What is the impact on system and application running under vista if I disable this?
Can we keep disable this for applcaition to run properly. My application is doing some hooking for Keyboard and Mouse and also injecting dll in to some processes.

Admin approval mode is a mode where a user who is an admin will be prompted for approval before admin tasks are run.
It works by running the user as a normal user most of the time, and elevating them to admin when required (with a confirmation prompt)
You should not disable it for developing because you need to ensure you application works with it because your users may have it turned on. You should embed a manifest in your application to tell vista how you program should behave. You can use the manifest to tell vista that you program requires elevation, and vista will elevate it and display the required prompt to the user.

Thanks. I have a application (TestA) which forks another application (TestB) with admin credentials. TestB application is now runing under Administrator credentials and it does the some admin activities like loading driver (.sys file). But while running TestB application with Admin credentails am unable to load driver i.e it fails to load driver.
Above application is running with following conditions.
i) Application should run in Standard User mode.
ii) UAC i.e. Admin Approval mode is enabled.
Now my question is whehter above approach is correct or Do I need to incorporate manifest file for admin ELEVATION?
