I don't know about the version 6 but version 5 do not have such option .... can you suggest a way out?? I hope the info I have given is useful to think about the problem..!!

Set up a network share in the usual fashion, the VMware host and guests appear to each other as separate computers connected by a LAN.

The network is already set I guess on the host. So am I supposed to use Subnet : 192.168.175.0 (Refer my first post). How do I use it. Bcz on the guest nothing is visible. Cant see any network on the guest.
Or is it that I am supposed to create a new network? How do I do it? Please bear with me as I am unknown to these things

I would like to start new application when Windows is resuming from Stand By or Hibernation. Just like Startup folder or SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/Currentversion/Run registry entry.
Any suggestion

I'd advise that you create a small application that runs in the background that can execute your application when need be.
It depends what language you're writing the app in, but take a look at the WM_POWERBROADCAST notification, especially the PBT_APMRESUMEAUTOMATIC and PBT_APMRESUMESUSPEND events, which are sent when Windows is resuming from a low power state.

Every once in a while (several times a day it seems) Norton reports that it blocked an intrusion attempt on port 35 54343.
After that, for perhaps fifteen minutes, I can't browse anything.
This wasn't as annoying before, but now that I work from home it has become a serious problem (though maybe not URGENT!).
I assume that Norton (or Win XP Pro) is blocking all activity in an effort to "protect" me, but I should at least be able to configure the time period shouldn't I?
Before, I quick reboot was a reasonable response, but not so much anymore.
I've looked through Norton and Internet Settings without anything jumping out at me. A quick web search didn't yield enlightenment either.
Does anyone have any tips?

Norton is a useless piece of software that reports EVERY SINGLE SODDING SYN packet, even if there's nothing listening on that port. Replace it with something that works without annoying the heck out of you.
Windows XP SP2 (or later) has a built-in firewall. It blocks all incoming connection attempts apart from those to ports or programs you have explicitly allowed. You only get an 'Unblock' prompt when a previously unregistered program opens an unregistered port to listen on. If you choose to unblock, the program is then permitted to open any listening port in future.
Microsoft's position on outbound filtering was that there wasn't much point - once malware has got onto your computer, it can configure the firewall to allow traffic outbound anyway, at least if you're an administrator. Windows Vista's firewall offers outbound filtering but the default interface is the same as XP's - you have to go into Administrative Tools and open the 'Windows Firewall with Advanced Security' console to configure it.

Hi all,
I made an application in vc++ that clones a hard drive. In my application I am copying sector by sector of one hard drive to another hard drive. I copy all the sectors from sector 0 to end sector. That means I copy MBR of source Disk to Destination disk also, and also disk signature of source disk also copied to destination disk.
Now after cloning, In case of XP(when I cloning winXP disk to another) there is no problem I can reboot my system with cloned disk even Source disk is connected to machine also. When I check the disk signature of cloned drive it automatically changed by OS(because there can not be two Hard drives conneted to machine at same time having same disk signature) but system boots well and data is also there in both disk drives.
In case of VISTA when I clone my vista disk then also all sectors copied to Destination disk(including disk signature and all). After cloning If I boot my system with cloned drive(sourceVista disk is also connected) then the disk signature of cloned disk is changed - agree. But the system is not booting with Cloned disk and I get booting error "winload.exe" is currepted. Now if I remove my source drive from machine and try to boot with cloned disk then also I get same error message(I think that due to disk signature that was changed by OS when I rebooted). I can only boot my system with this cloned disk by changing the disk signature that was of SourceVista disk. It means I can reboot my system with Clone disk when it is connected seperately or with any other drive (other than sourceVista disk).
I tried to tell you my problem at my best but I am also confused that why it is happening.
I think it is right furum to place this problem.
Please anybody help me to sove the problem.

Hi, I'm running windows 2003 sp1. I used to apply group policy on my OU and now I want to edit it. But when I try to edit it again by accessing from the property of the OU, I found that the edit button is disable whether I already select my group policy object from the list. Does anyone know what is the cause of this problem? thank in advance

Folks,
Until recently I could right-click the taskbar and select Address from the Toolbars list. Now, on two machines, that item has disappeared. Where in the Windows XP system are these things kept and how can I get my address TB back?

Well, I figured it out on my own...
Turns out the the XP-SP3 release removes the address toolbar, due to some legal issues (so I've read).
If you, like me, miss this feature, here's how you can get it back:
Restore address toolbar deskband after installing xp sp3/[^]
I fould the one from Niversoft to be the best for me; your mileage may differ.

hmmm .. I would have tried something like :-

.. note the use of the 'backticks' around the command.. I cant think of another way of doing it (my unix admin is a bit rusty though)

Hello everyone, I'm having problem with my Window Server 2003 here. I have create a shared folder for the client. But I found that each client have to login if they need to retrieve the data from this shared folder.
I need this shared folder just available to read for the client and it doesn't need any password for the client to read the data inside this shared folder because actually my client is automaticly bootup the system and auto read the data from server in this shared folder. So its really imposible for the client to insert password for verification when they retrieve data from this server manually.
Anyone can tell me how should I create this shared folder in my server? What kind of setting should I do so that the client never need a password verification to read the data inside this folder?

If I understand you correct you want to run something from a shared folder without having to log in a user.
One way is to run a script from HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
You still need to login to the shared folder though, one tool for doing that is found here[^]
The best is of course to use a domain and a group policy startup script.

We have requirement to load device driver (unsigned) on windows vista with Admin credentials. User is having Admin credentials but unable to load the driver. The same driver can be loaded on Windows XP Service Pack 2.
We have tried to find different tools but unable to get. Please let us know how can we install such device driver on windows vista.

If it's the 64-bit OS, you can't load unsigned drivers unless you hit F8 at boot time and pick the menu option to allow it.

Thanks for your reply. No it is 32 bit vista m/c. we are loading drivers (signed using verisign certificates) dynamically with built-in administrator credentials but fails to load. Also we copied our driver to System32/drivers folder and try to load the driver but it is still failing. Please suggest us to how to load signed drivers.

Can anyone recommend a way to back up a development server? It's not production - so, not life-threatening if something happened to it, but still setting the thing up with all the apps on it represents a lot of hours of work I would not like to have to recreate.
Is there a way to take snapshots of the whole thing periodically so that I could stand up the exact system (os, apps, data) if needed? I've read about software like Acronis True Image and Symantec Backup Exec... more expensive than I'd like, but maybe worth it if it really does the trick. Is there something else that would work reasonably well (again, this is development stuff, not critical)?

I don't know if this is applicable for you. Our development server is running as a virtual machine and we take periodically snapshots of it (via the console application of vmware).

The machine I want to back up is actually a host for many virtuals. I was hoping if I could do an occasional live backup of the host, it would essentially be a backup of all virtuals and all their specific configurations. (kind of watching the watchman?...  )
