I am just trying to investigate the feasibility of having HTTP Compression on IIS webservers. From within the ASP.NET framework, I can have the GZip stream and achieve the same and it works like a charm, taking a bit of CPU load though (since it is managed code).
I am looking at two URLs (below) for IIS 5 and IIS 6:

But both of these options say about direct UI configuration from MMC Snapin for static pages a little MetaBase Tweaking for dynamic pages. Is this a recommended option for high traffic webservers? What do you suggest would be a better route to chose?

Hi all,
I am a newbie to NDIS driver programming. I have written a very basic and simple NDIS protocol driver which just prints a message for all incoming packets. (I've taken help from DDK's Passthru and Protocol driver examples).
The part where I am stuck is that my Protocol driver is registered with NDIS as BindAdapter, UnbindAdapter and PnPEvent Handlers are all getting invoked/called and working as per requirement. However neither ProtocolReceive() nor ProtocolReceivePacket() is getting invoked, even in case of heavy network traffic ( which I confirmed with use of Wireshark). 
Please Help.

I have windows 2003 server, in IIS Application Pools node is not displaying in IIS tree on left side.
I even re-install the IIS but unfortunately i am unable to get it.

I think this will happen in IIS 6.0 if it's in IIS 5.0 Compatibility Mode.
Right-click Web Sites, select Properties, and go to the Service tab. Ensure 'Run WWW service in IIS 5.0 isolation mode' is unchecked. If it is checked, you should check with anyone else running applications on this server to find out why.

I am trying to set 404 custom error page on windows 2003.
then I restarted the IIs but it fails
In IIS
1. I am selecting the properties of the website
2. selecting Custom errors Tab
3. Then selecting the new custom error page
4. then restarting the IIS
But This procedure fails ...

I'd check their web-site again. It has been available for free for at least a few weeks now. With a nice little bug that wouldn't let you power on your vms .... but thats fixed now.
depending on what you're going to do with it there are a number of alternatives.
Virtual Server or 2008 for microsoft.
xen, or qemu for linux.
And VMware Server which runs on top of Linux or Windows

Basically not possible. If you can't read the file you can't use it. If you can read it you can copy it.
Most "Copy protection" systems are having intentional errors or other anomalies on the cd which the program searches for.
All normal cdburners are unable to recreate these errors intentionally .

I think thats ok, it probably picked it up while trying to load from some 'malicious site' you were visiting. It could be a false alarm.

Try to use another virus scanner, for example F-Secure.[^]
Try a spyware scanner, for example Spybot S&D[^]
Or use Autoruns[^] from sysinternals to find out which apps are autostarting on your computer.

The user may not have any version of Adobe Reader.
I use Foxit Reader[^] which seems to be faster and less buggy than Adobe.

Has anyone downloaded the trial version of Windows Server 2008 Web edition(64 bit) (6001.18000.080118-1840_amd64fre_ServerWeb_en-us-KRMWXFRE_EN_DVD.iso from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=B1CB6D54-7268-4791-9C5D-CDB21516BF5A&WT.sp=_msdn_,dcsmgru7m99k7mqmgrhudo0k8_8c6m&displaylang=en[^]) and managed to install it?
I've tried downloading it four times in the last few days and I'm convinced the file is corrupted. Boots fine, but when it starts installing windows, it fails with message 0x80070017 The file may be corrupt or missing.
Installing on DL360 G5 with 4GB Ram, 72GB HDD primary. Also tried with HP SmartStart v 8.00 to install necessary drivers etc and this fails when starting to load windows with message winsetup.dll cannot be found (0x7B).
32 bit version works fine.
Perhaps I'll try enterprise version of it and see if that works.

What I want to do

I am writing an application using Win32 API and Visual C++ 6.0.
This application will perfrom a system warmstart,
but only if a list of programs are *not* actually running.
To do this, I have used the Win32 API-function "EnumWindows()"
to get the same list as Windows' task manager will return.
Everything is tested fine at moduel level.
Now my big problem
------------------
I have added this application as an SQL server agent job to Microsft SQL Server 7.
But now, the application does not work properly, because the list,
returned by EnumWindows(), is empty.
I am a newbie to Windows system development. But it seems, that there are access
problems between user's desktop and server agent's desktop.
How can I get this list of running applications from within running as an SQL server agent job?
I have tried enumeration of winstations, desktops and desktopwindows.
Is this the correct way to sove the problem?
I will get errors #2 (not found) and #5 (access denied).
I have poor knowledge of winstations, desktops and security.
Want I want is:

I am logged on as administrator to Windows 2000.
I am starting a sample batch (sample.cmd) with "sample.cmd" as its window title.
I can see this batch from within the task manager.
My application can see it, too, if started from inside windows explorer.
Then I start SQL Server 7, and I add my application as an SQL server agent job.
My application will start, but will *not* see "sample.cmd".
What must be done, so that my apllication running as an SQL server agent job,
will see the sample batch?

Under windows Vista I have set up a few non-admin users. On the Same PC I have several volumes which contain sensitive files. I have been playing around with the volumes permissions but so far have not been able to achieve the desired result. I want the other users to be able to see the volume in "My Computer" but be unable to access them without the administrators password. i.e. double clicking on the volume a UAC box should appear prompting for the password. Does anybody know how this can be done?

If you right click on the drive you want to restrict, click on properties and go to the "security" tab, you can change the security permissions for the drive. If you only allow administrators to be able to access the drive content, I believe that if a non-administrator tries to access the drive a UAC box will appear and ask for the administrator password.
