I was looking for an article I saw some time ago about a prog to change the display mode via a simple command line program.
So, I typed in "change display mode".
Result: Page 1 of 10 (items 1 - 10 of 100)
I didn't find it within the first 10 articles, so I press <next>.
Result: No matches found.
What's wrong?

It looks like you were moved to another server in between requests and that server's search catalog may need rescanning. Fixed one the other day so I'll take another look at them all ASAP.

Click on the [Get Article's HTML] link and you'll get the edited html source for your article. Now if you make changes to this source and submit it, Chris or the editor handling it will be able to update it quickly unless you have made a lot of changes to the html that does not match CP norms.

Edited articles have gone through a filtering process, checks have been made and the html formatted to reflect CP look and feel. Unedited ones might look anyway they want to. A minimum level of quality is maintained in the edited section. Unedited ones may be of poor quality, might be advertisements of commercial products, buggy methods etc...

Editors don't just reformat the HTML or correct grammar and spelling. The editors test out the sources at least once, usually building the sources and doing a quick test-out of the application. If minor errors or problems are encountered, depending on their nature, the errors are either corrected or the article author contacted. Sometimes screenshots have to be resized or compressed. Unwanted files may be removed from zip files. etc...
In several cases even the correctness of the code have to be verified. And has happened too.

Usually it's non-english speaking people who have a problem with the language and the formatting. If you take your html using the [Get Article's HTML], make your changes sticking to CP styles and sent it to Chris, your article will get updated sooner than otherwise.

I remember my earlier days on CP when I used to submit articles using my own custom look and feel and I used to be annoyed when the editors modified it to fit the CP look. I understand the annoyances you might be having on this issue, but one very good thing about CP is that all of its edited articles maintain a uniform layout and appearance. As you say, the editors do make layout and formatting changes, but they do it following a set of guidelines which have to be stuck to.

This might be partially true, but we can't have different articles on the site with totally different looks. Uniformity is an essential part of any set of UI guidelines and CP is no different from that.
It might astonish you that many articles have been ignored merely because the formatting was messy even though the technical content of those articles were quite good.

It is quite impossible for the handful of editors to do a thoroguh source review. The editors only do a quick run through of the demo sources and the code snippets. The 100s of thousands of CP viewers are there to do the full length review.

Every single edited article may not of be the highest quality. But a bare minimum standard is maintained. It is true that there still are several very very good articles in the unedited sections. The editors are trying their best to edit and move them all into the respective sections.

Russ, I fully comprehend your issue. But you must realize that not every article submitter is a Russ Freeman. Many of the authors are people who do not use english as a spoken or even written language. In such cases it would be highly suicidal to allow them to directly enter articles into a section.

No. Unedited articles are not classed as bad or of poorer quality. It's just that there eis a higher chance that one of the unedited articles will be poor in quality. There are some excellent articles in the unedited section. To establish this point I must add that the current highest rated article on CP by Paul Watson is an enedited article and the first 27 votes it received were all 5s.

Perhaps Chris has some kinda plan to make it easier for authors to submit article updates on their edited articles.
Basically the authors can make life a lot easier by following a few simple CP formatting guidelines. But then as you say, for people like you it'd mean the extra effort of maintaining two different copies of an article.
Anyhow the delay time in an update getting reflected is lessening as Chris has now added some extra editors who will help him to focus more on his other CP priorities.
I am the newest editor and so some of my comments may not have made full sense. Kindly pardon me for any fool-remarks I might have unknowingly uttered in this post.

No - editing ensures that articles are of sufficient quality, that they are sufficiently different to those already posted, are categorized properly, are of the standard format, have the spelling and grammar corrected and that all the links, zips, images are OK.
What you don't see are the number of articles I reject, or the difference between the submitted version and the posted version for authors who have English as their second language or simply aren't good with HTML. It may seem a small thing to have the articles all readable, all formatted the same way, have the links work and not have spelling and grammar mistakes but when you add it all up over 2,600 articles it makes a very big, but often subtle difference.
The problem is I don't scale very well but I'm working on it. Please be patient as I setup systems to allow the other editors to take more of the immeditate workload off me.

That is your problem, man. You make it too easy.  Have you noticed that some strange looking (ugly) articles never get edited? You need to make sure your font/color/style is as different from the CP standard as possible, then no editor would want to touch yours.
Seriously, updating an article through one of editors doesn't really take that long, especially after superman Nish started helping.
Of course, it is better to have radio buttons to provide the following choices when submitting an article:
1. I know my article looks good and is of high quality, don't you dare to edit it.
2. I know my article looks ugly but that's the way I want, don't you dare to eidt it.
3. Help me correct spelling, grammar, and fix all the bugs in code, please.

I'm sorry, but i read far more articles than i update, and this seems terribly petty and arrogant to me. From what i've seen, the *really* ugly articles that don't get edited tend to be the ones that are so completely worthless, often because of the formatting, that no-one even reads them. Why you'd want this for your article is beyond me.
If you really think there are problems with CP's formatting, i'd think you'd be better off bringing them up in this forum; your lone article, crying out in the wilderness, isn't going to make that much of a difference in the end. Even someone posting as many articles as Nish didn't get the color scheme changed to gray .

Previously, if one article references another article and the referenced article got moved by the editor, when you click the out-dated link, CP will find and display the correct link.
Unfortunately, the feature is gone now. CP will only tell you "Page not found".

It's still there. Sometimes though it simply can't find the article, or if an article has been removed then it work work either.
any particular article you were looking for? I'll double check.

Yes, it works now after you changed the title back to "Executing commands on a remote machine". The article was referenced in another article of mine, somehow the feature doesn't work if the title is changed.

I really like the "New" notification that appears next to new posts, but I think it could be cool to incorporate some client side logic into it. It would be really handy if the "New" went away after a user have clicks on a post. That way it will be easier to see which posts are actually new to the user. Currently it gets really hard to keep track of what you have read, and what you haven't in one of the massive threads that grows very quickly (When there are like 25 different "new" posts).
Actually, after thinking about how to implement that feature, it is probably way more work than it is worth. I'm still going to post this, because it is the only thing about these awesome forums that I think could really help make them better.

Not too mention the client-side load that would put on the client (scripting languages in general are not very performance orientated.)
Of course you could do it on the server-side, but then that means some new tables in the CP database and blam, there goes all the extra scalability Chris has eeked out of the code already.
I think most of us would prefer to keep the forums as they are if that means the performance stays as it is. While this feature you mention is cool, it would throw performance out the window and we would all start moaning

It would be kind of nasty, but keep in mind that you would only have to keep track of the posts that have been read up until the time they would have naturally fallen off the "new" classification (Perhaps expiring cookies would work for this). That is probably less than 200 posts (probably only gets that high durring a flame war) at any given time.
What do you think?
