I know. I also said some applications have dependancy on it. We found out the hard way one day a few years ago. A couple of apps, ever so silently, used a hidden CMD window to do some stuff. Setting this policy for the user broke both apps, giving wierd and misleading error messages. If you looked at TaskManager while the apps were running, every once in a while you'd see CMD.EXE pop up in the list, but no visible window would ever show. Clearing that policy fixed the apps, and I wanted to go beat the people who wrote them.

It is not a good idea to block out access to MS-DOS. Like dave said, some installers rely on the command prompt.

Should be a straightforward task but I don't how to do it. I need to launch an executable from an icon, say on the desktop, by clicking on it. Any helpful guidelines?

Create a shortcut on the desktop and then right-click the shortcut to get the properties. Click the Change Icon button and select the one you want from wherever you'd like - it defaults to the first one stored in the executable's program file.

I have a .bat file which I'd like to have run automatically every night.
I tried using Windows "scheduled tasks" and referenced the .bat file. I then tried manually running it to test it. A command window briefly flashes on the screen but the .bat file does not appear to be invoked.
I verified that the .bat file isn't getting called by creating a simple test .bat file which did nothing more than create a file on disk. Sure enough the .bat file isn't getting called. The test .bat file contents are shown below.

I also tried referencing cmd.exe /c "c:\test.bat" in the scheduled task and this didn't work either.
The annoying part about all this is that I successfully did this a long time ago and I recall having similar issues and eventually figuring it out If only I could recall what the magic was which made it work.
Any ideas?

Have you tried changing the /c argument to /k for the command prompt so that it does not go away, you may be getting an error message and can't see it due to the command prompt window disappearing too quickly.

Thanks for the tip. That revealed the problem. The issue was that the full path to the .bat file I wanted to launch contained spaces. Despite it being enclosed in double-quotes, this still caused a problem for the scheduled task runner.
Using dir /x to obtain the 8.3 abbreviated name for the directory which contained the space and using that fixed the problem.

Does "change user /install" and "change user /execute" work for Power Users?

and then system going restart state.

The fact that it's continually restarting suggests that some other file has become corrupted. It's probably generating a bugcheck (STOP error, blue screen) but is configured to automatically reboot when this occurs, so you're stuck in a reboot cycle.
I'd actually replace this hard disk. Once you have the OS up and running again on a different disk, you can plug the old disk in and see if you can recover the data from it.
If you don't care about the data on it, try running an in-place repair. Read these steps[^] for how to do this.

You don't need to plug another hard disk in to recover the files on the old one. Come on. You just need a nice linux based live cd. Slax[^] is great for the job and it has a nice and easy gui. And it requires no install whatsoever, it'a a live cd. Check it out Cheers.

Any body got any idea about how to configure the FTP configurations in Windows XP Embedded operation system?
I tried in Windows XP Professional edition, it works fine for me. But i don't know where to configure them for XP embedded OS.

can i resize the code section of a PE file?
for example: i want to add 100 bytes(fill with 0x90) end of the code section.
i change values of "SizeOfRawData" and "VirtualSize" for Code Section header. and i change values of "PointerToRawData" and "VirtualAddress" for next sections.
but the new PE file don't execute.

I am trying to replace a supporting report dll in system32 folder that by web app uses. I unload the web app,disable webserver in IIS and I am unable to copy or delete the file into the folder (access denied file in use etc). Only way I can get around it is to re-boot the computer and copy over at that time. Not a very productive way to accomplish this.
Any thoughts on how to do this easier?

While loading of my windows application, one of the task is to get all the processes which are running currently.
When i tried to do this, It is raising an error saying that
'Process performance counter is disabled, So the requested operation can not be performed'

Thanks a lot for giving the reference. I tried to do what they asked to follow to disable the performance counters, still i did not get any solution for the problem. That is i did reset of the Dword value to 1 and to 0 back. There was no change in that error for both the values.

Hi ,
I installed Frdora 7.0 on my machine.It work's fine . But when I shutdown the machine then all services is closed and give a message , system is holting , and I have to manually poweroff .
Give me any Idea for resolve this problem .
