While running my application i got following error in Application log
Faulting application .exe, version , faulting module mfc42u.dll, version 6.2.8071.0, fault address 0x0000239d.
Corresponding error was logged in System Log
Application Error : The instruction at "0x5f801088" referenced memory at "0x00000004". The memory could not be "read".
Could you let me know when can the above errors occur and what is the cause?

Your application passed a bad pointer into MFC and it crashed. Run the debug build of your program under the debugger and repeat whatever it was that you did. That should show you - if you're lucky, with an ASSERT, otherwise an exception - where the problem occurs.
If the problem does not recur with a debug build, consider building your release build with debugging information. This is still allowed and is a very good idea for troubleshooting this kind of problem. Under C/C++ in Project Settings, under Debug Info, select Program Database. Then, on the Link tab, check Generate Debug Info. In the Project Options box, add the switch /OPT:REF (this is the default but is suppressed when Generate Debug Info is enabled). The latter switch removes unreferenced code from your project (although it does not have much effect unless Enable Function-Level Linking is enabled under the Customize category of the C/C++ tab).
Most likely you passed a null pointer and MFC tried to use the second member of the structure.

I've got an XP Pro desktop connected to a Vista laptop through a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. While the connection was successful, copying files from the Vista laptop to the XP Pro desktop is painfully2 slow. So slow, in fact, that Vista reported that the 800MB that I wanted to copy was going to take 30xxx days to complete!
If the laptop is connected to the desktop at 54Mbs (6.75MBs), then an 800MB file should copy in roughly 118 minutes, give or take minutes for extra stuff being transmitted. Am I doing the math right?
What have I not got connected/configured right here, if anything? I would have thought that small amount of data could be copied in just a matter of minutes.
The Linksys folks suggested tweaking the MTU, thinking that maybe the packets are being spilt and reassembled, thus adding to the transmission time.

I would guess your using the windows file sharing?
It was many years ago i used it last, so i cant remember if it was really slow or not. I would suggest you use FTP to transfer the files, FileZilla have both a cleint and server software (which works both ways) maybe you should try that? If you like low configuration and easy setup maybe you want to use a simple HTTP server, like NAWS[^] (also both ways, upload feature).
The file transfer should of course go a lot faster then that, but if you have a very low signal quality it might go slower (but not that slow..)
I use FTP for all my LAN transfers, and HTTP for all my external transfers. FTP (though a 100Mbps cable) can easily go up to 6000KB/s (with slow computers).
Other (external) factors that can affect the speed may be:
Many small files? (like thousands of them) will slow it down alot. (zip them)
Very fragmented file? (defrag it)
Computer busy with other operations?
Bad signal quality due to reflections?
If the devices are close to each other you might want to buy a short crosswired network cable to connect them directly to eachother, its a lot more reliable and faster (if the 54Mbps is becoming a restriction).

Changes were made to the file copy algorithm in Windows Vista so it no longer ate all of the system memory if writing to the destination was taking longer than read-ahead from the source file. Unfortunately the new algorithm was significantly worse in many areas. This will be fixed in SP1, due to be released very soon. See http://blogs.technet.com/markrussinovich/archive/2008/02/04/2826167.aspx[^] for some information on what's actually happening.
Windows XP uses the old SMB 1.0 protocol (if you're following that article) which can only copy 60KB before requiring acknowledgement, which breaks TCP's latency-handling mechanisms.
As the other poster says, FTP can be a lot quicker because the data connection is just a 'firehose' TCP connection, there's no extra protocol on top.

my computer is Toshiba Laptop Tecra A6 and
the problem is mainly bout IEXPLORER and as follows:
1. Can not open IEXPLORER.EXE - Application Error
the instruction at "0x....... could not be "read".
2. Modem sound is never heard any more when connecting by dial-up.
3. The computer could not hibernate even I click the hibernate button.
4. Every time windows starts, "new hardware found..." is blown even I update nearly all drivers.

1. I would re install windows in a case like that. Usually you get windows re-install CDs with all laptops, just throw it in and it will be like new. (all documents, etc, will be erased)
If you dont have it handy you can use a normal cd, but you will have to install all drivers...
It is possible that there there is another way to fix it, but it might not be worth the effort.
2. You should be able to change that in the settings for the dial up connection / hardware settings for the modem / audio volume levels (sometimes modem sound goes through a audio slider)
3. is hibernate enabled? try doing start, shut down, hibernate (or press shift at normal shutdown dialog) (or it could be the known winxp sp1 hibernate problem which will show an error message)
4. Well then some driver is still missing, if all the hardware you want to use works OK, then just disable it in the hardware manager.

so it is damaged and actually I scanned and some were erased. Butit seems that there is some left.

Yes, it is possible that some spyware/malware or a virus broke some parts of windows. (and it is quite common)
removing all bad software may fix the problem, but it might also be more permanent. (in wich a re install or system restore might be the easiest way to get rid of it)
You could try Trend Micro's Housecall (google it) and hope if might find & remove what another program couldnt...

Can anyone tell me if there are a certain sequence in witch these LDAP Attributes should be set ??
C - Country
L – Location
O – Organization
DC – Domain Component
OU – Organizational Unit
CN – Common Name
Example: [LDAP://CN=Domain Admins,CN=Users,DC=local,DC=mydomainname,DC=com] and so on
Because if i call the path above like this [LDAP://DC=local,DC=mydomainname,DC=com,CN=Domain Admins,CN=Users] (switch the DC and CN attributes) I get an unexpected error.
Do i have to set all the DC attributes last ??? or is there a certain sequence to use

Yes. You always specify them in order starting at the object, or most specific container and walk "up the tree" until you reach the largest, or most general, container. In your case, that's DC=com. It should be:

I am working on a project on NTFS. I never used to get errors while restoring the images with the code which i developed.After resizing the partition PQMagic is showing cross linked errors or cluster not allocated.Certainly some attribute of some file must have changed.can you just tell me which file attribute changes when we resize the partition or any other reason due to which we may encounter this error.

No file attribute or flag was changed. Cross-linked files occur when a cluster appears to belong to a file, but the volume bitmap does not show it as such. If you are using Windows XP or Vista, click Start then type "cmd" now press Ctrl+Shift+Enter to grant Admin rights to the prompt. Now run the following:
chkdsk c: /f /v
This will run the check disk program and attempt to fix any errors found on the c: partition (if you are checking a different partition, change the drive letter). It will also echo all the files it will be working on.
If Partition Magic didn't already do this, it may be good to defragment the drive when you are done, just to help the disk work faster after a partition resize.

Hi,
I've two IDE HDD and one DVD RW Drive in my machine. I've got the new HDD recently.
Now I tried install Fedora in my machine after writing the ISO image to a DVD. When But my machine always reboots when I opt to boot from CD. Earlier I've installed Ubuntu in my machine (before installing new HDD ) but this time that CD Rom is also not functioning. Is there anythign wrong wtih my BIOS configuration? I would appreciate if you could put some light on this?

If the drives are both on the same cable, try changing the jumper setting on the new drive to "Slave" instead of the default "CS" (cable select) if you havn't already.
If the drives are on different cables (1 disk/controller), then make sure they are both set to master.

On the IDE Slot 1 I configured my old HDD.
On the other slot available, I connected both DVD Drive and new HDD ( contains the Windows XP installation ) using single cable.

This would really surprise me if the problem was related to Fedora. Try this:
On IDE 0 (the first controller), connect your new HDD as the master drive and set the jumper to master. Then connect your old HDD as the secondary device on the same cable and set the jumper to slave. Also, make sure that the cable is 80 pin and/or ATA133, you don't want two HDD operating off of a low cable rating, like ATA66.
Now, on IDE 1 (the second controller), connect your DVD drive as master and set the jumper as such.
If you think that the BIOS is the culprit, then reset it now.
Now, go into your BIOS and set the boot order like this:
1 - Floppy Drive (if you have one)
2 - Secondary Master CD/DVD Drive
3 - Primary Master Hard Disk
4 - Primary Slave Hard Disk
Now try booting the Fedora installation DVD.

Actually, I am a little confused as to the answer. My company laptop, using WinXP SP2, says:
"CHDIR: Show or change current directory", which is a little weird. However, it works as listed, but I am not sure if they haven't changed something there....
If you are in doubt, check the Sysinternals-Tools. They probably have what you are looking for.

I have a requirement to redirect an print job from an MS-DOS based program, to a text file, rather than LPT1:
Back in the day, when MS-DOS ruled the world, I seem to remember that this could be done with a DOS command, but cannot remember how?
Can anyone refresh my memory?
