I'm running XP Home Edition on my personal laptop (i.e. no odd admin restrictions).
When attempting to set up a VPN Network Connection, I get to the screen
stating the following:
"how do you want to connect to the network at your workplace?"
Easy question, but both options are disabled! I can't select either option,
and even though the Next button is active, clicking it does nothing.

Both options disabled? What are the options? How is your VPN connection going to be set up? Do you already have the public IPs [are they static or dynamic]?

I have Windows Update set to "download but don't install." Then I click the system tray shield in my own time and examine the updates list before installing. However, sometimes the shield does not appear but on shutdown you are asked if you want to install updates. Does anyone know how to make the shield reappear or otherwise examine the updates list?

Hi,
I was looking to use WinDbg remotely to debug device driver anyway was looking at some documentation
and it looked like there were one or more ways of connecting 1) null modem via a com port specfying those paramters in the boot.ini
also in addition or maybe just another method of connecting remotely was starting WinDbg with a TCP:PORT number
I have a wireless router and can open up a port by typing the IP address of the router and from one the menus opening up a port
My question is when connecting through a port dont I have to know the IP address of the machine I connecting to
or maybe this isn't necessary since the machine I am connecting to is the one that is connected via the null modem

Hi guys,
Need some help on this.
There are some image files available on a machine having windows OS installed. My web server is a unix based system. While creating webpage on unix based machine i need those image which are available on window OS based machine.
Is it possible to use those image files without uploading on our unix based machine.
If yes please let me know the process.

The only real way to do it without copying them to the UNIX machine is to have them hosted on a webserver on the windows machine, and then directly reference their URLs in the image tags on the unix webserver.

My App is getting this error when I try to deploy it on a network shared server:
The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy. The operation required the SecurityException. To grant this application the required permission please contact your system administrator,....... and so on
Can you please step me thru exactly what I need to do to get rid of the security policy erro my app (C# vb.net Framework 1.1) is getting?
This is what I understand I need to do:
1. Create a command prompt for .net
Execute the following line:
sn.exe -k KeyFile.snk
Put KeyFile.snk in a folder my app can access.
2. Add this to my AssemblyInfo.cs file:
[assembly: AssemblyKeyFile("KeyFile.snk")]
3. Rebuild my app.
4. Redeploy my app on network server.
Copy KeyFile.snk to folder my apps expects it in.
5. On network server:
Add new code group - "AnyName"
Choose "Strong Name" as condition.
Import my exe and give it full trust.
Now my app should work?
Please let me know if I left anything out.
I am only a mere developer not a network guru and I need to get my app working quickly.

First of all sorry as this post may not strictly belong here but I couldnt find the Vista Forum.
Any ways here is my question, what ways do people use to get older games to run under Vista (specifically home premium)?
Most of my favourite games (such as Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six) are intended to run under Windows 95 - Windows 2K so I am unable to play them even in compatability mode.
I dont want to have to drag out an old PC with Windows 95 on it but is this the only choice (I have looked at Virtual PC but this is not supported on Home Premium)?

Hi everyone 
Been a while since i have posted a topic.
I was just randomly thinking about Microsoft and the way they do things.
When a file is deleted and the recycle bin is emptied, can the file still be retrieved, i mean the file cant be deleted, i mean what does it mean when you delete a file?
Can the files be retrieved?

In general when you delete a file the OS just marks the beginning and end of the file as over writable, meaning if you just delete a file, the data is still there, its just ready to be overwritten with data of a new file. In windows, when deleting a file to the recycle bin, and then emptying the recycle bin then recovery is very easy as there is still a pointer to where the file was located (ie which sector) therefore a variety of recovery programs can be used to recover the file.
Google for free file recovery if you need such programs.

Example of a program for data recovery is Badcopy Pro. However, i have used System Mechanics 4.0 to incinerate data and when i initiate the Badcopy Pro, the data cant be retrieved from the harddisk. So, there is a way to get rid of the data permanently, i believe.

Yes, of course data can be deleted in a way to make in non-recoverable, usually you just overwrite the data of the file with random data a few times. And then delete the file, and maybe even the pointer.

Yes, only if something has been written over it's old space on the drive.

Hi,
I have an MSI that installs a bunch of files. However, on uninstall, I would also like to remove another file that's not part of the original install, say, c:\document and setting\all users\folder1\test.txt (put here by another program altogether). Is there a way to do this? I tried everything including <customaction> and <removefile>, but nothing work. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

You can remove a file or folder that isn't part of a component as part of uninstall using the RemoveFile table. See the SDK documentation.

If you want to hack it (programically), verify you have SeDebugPriviledge. You can then adjust you token (or results from Lsa... functions) to mimic a local administrator. That is, always return TRUE for an access check.
Otherwise, speak to your Sys Admin. Domain Controllers get a different GPO than workstations.

Hi, I used my computer several year. Now I found the problem that the screen of the computer become blur (not clear and difficult to read). I do not make any change to the system because I just using this computer for typing document only.
So I would like to know some idea in order to solve this problem.

I extended a couple monitors by keeping the resolution the same, but changing the refresh rate. For example, if 70 Hz is giving you problems, try 72, and 85.

Sounds like the focus of the electron beams is off. This can happen as components age. Either get the monitor serviced or replace it.
