The answer to your second Question.
From a DLL you can use API calls to inform the user whatz happening inside the DLL.
Taking your example, You have a textbox for the user to see and a process takes place in the DLL. Now you can use SendMessage API call to inform the user that something is happening in the DLL. All you have to do is to pass the handle of the textbox to the DLL so that you can post message back to the textbox from the DLL using SendMessage API

Hi all,
"I have inherited" from a my colleague a VisualBasic6 application that uses an Access97 database with Jet(I suppose). In the code I found hte following string "Provider=MSDataShape.1;Persist Security Info=False;Connect Timeout=15;Data Source=" & JCR_DB & ";Data Provider=MICROSOFT.JET.OLEDB.4.0"
Now I would to use Access2000 but, when I try to connect it I receive an message error: "incompatible format"...
I think that I have to change the Project->References using a new OCX (?!) but how?
Anyone could help me?
Excuse me if I have described the problem in little detailed way but I don't know VB programming.

To make a reference to a different version of Ado goto project -> references, and they are called microsoft activex data objects.
To download the lastest version of ADO, you will have to do this for each computer if it's not already installed..

Im planing a project, but one of my requirements is that the app
will auto-update it self. My plan is to have the app checking whith
my server if there are any new program-updates/patches.
Q: Are ther any built-in services witch can help me whit this?
Or can a webservice fix it, having the patch in XML?

I have a problem:
Try make a new custom control(usercontrol1). In this control, you add a listbox which goes beyond the bounderies of you usercontrol1 and insert as many strings so these as well goes beyond the bounderies. That is it, compile it.
Now try add usercontrol1 and a button control to a webform. Since the listbox goes beyond the the bounderies, you add the property (autoScroll = true ) to usercontrol. Compile and run the program. You now use the scrollbar to go to the last element in the listbox and select this. You now push the button, and then you select the second last item in the listbox. Now you will see that the usercontrol scrolls to the top.... WHY? I think it it because the control is being ScrollControlIntoView, but how to prevent that?

array (with no lenth defined) in parameters.
my function (in c++) have a float pointer
but VB doesnt validate my function...

I use the managed c++ library for wrapping a class,
and i spell it into VB...
I have now a function which copying the __gc table
to __nogc table...
But is there other means to acces to the memory,
for example with a pointer...

When you said "managed C++", that eliminated me fromt he discussion. Unless forced to by a job change or corporate policy of my current employer, I have no interest or knowledge in "managed" c++.

I know this is probably a stupid question, but I just started on this whole VB thing (damn that .NET! Else I wouldn't be learning VB...). So far I've written a program to type a message in one textbox that displays in another textbox as encrypted text, and now I want to add an option to save the encrypted text. Help, anyone?

Check to see if you're compiling in debug mode. I've found that compiling in release mode with optimizations on can decrease initial load time up to 10x.

there is also a known bug in this verson of the dotnet framework involving slow start times.
If you don't have one... try adding an "ASPNET" account to your machine. you can disable the account if you want... it just needs to be there.

Have a look at the ngen.exe util that comes with the .NET Fx.
You should get an immediate benefit.

Hi all!
I made a simple Windows Application (MyApp.exe) that shows a simple form with the system date.
That application adds an icon to the system tray (a notify icon) that has associated to it a simple context Menu (Exit). So far no problems...
My problem is:
If i run MyApp.exe 2,3,4 or n times it adds 2,3,4,n icons to the system tray
 
How can i prevent this in order to if i had already the icon of MyApp in the system tray, and if i click on MyApp.exe the focus goes to the form of MyApp and don't add a new icon to system tray??

You just check if your app allready is running with eg. ::FindWindow(...) (you need to P/Invoke it)

Rather than using the FindWindow API, there is a nice .NET way to find out if your app is already running.
If UBound(Diagnostics.Process.GetProcessesByName(Diagnostics.Process.GetCurrentProcess.ProcessName)) > 0 Then
If this returns true then there is another instance of the process running. What I haven't had time to work out yet is how to activate that existing instance. So if anyone knows off the top of their head how to do that, please comment. I've done plenty of this stuff with API calls in VB6 but I'd prefer to use native .NET as much as possible now.

Hello everybody!
i am a fresher in software development.I am currently working on a project called "Voice Enabled Visual Basic Protocol".This is an application with speech recognisation capabilties.It will allow user to give simple voice commands and work will be done also it will show the error messages not thru normal message boxes but through the voice messages.I know i have to use the "Speech SDK " ans "Microsoft SAPI" and the concept of "text to Speech" and "speech to text".I have relevant matter and code samples for text to speech conversion but i dont have anything regarding the speech to text conversion.so any could please provide me the proper SDLC for voice to text and some code samples.
my time is running out very fast i have to complete this project in very short span of time so plz help me out intelligent gentleman.
