I must say that is a very disingenious question and it is very tempting to make the equally disingenious allegation that "only an American could have asked that". It's like saying "what's the point driving a Prius instead of a Hummer?" in a context of discussing the environment!
The power consumption of computers is not insignificant. If we can keep them off more than half the time (most people work less than 12 hours) it ought to be easy to see why we should.
You do however mention something that is onto something relevant: It's not as convenient to switch off systems as it is to let them run. If boot times were much shorter and wake-on-lan easy to use (maybe it is, I don't know!) it would make a difference.
Given that flash memory is incredibly cheap and quite fast, it should be easy enough to equip a computer with a flash that it could use to save/restore RAM data on when hibernating/waking up...

I turn on my PC when I wake up and turn off when I go sleep And I don't shutdown it every night because I don't sleep every night, for sample last night, I have compiling Xorg and few another things for FreeBSD and I was observing a progress

Unfortunately, you cannot connect via Remote Desktop when the computer is off; therefore, I leave my computer on. Additionally, I schedule defrag and updates to run at night, as well as, some other maintenance tasks. By leaving Outlook running, all my e-mail message rules are also applied to incoming e-mail messages, which reduces the number of messages I have to sync on my mobile device (Windows Mobile 2003 SE).

Same here, but I try to shutdown my computer overnight when it's got nothing to do. I also listen to music through my computer when listening to music in bed. I created a sleeptimer program which automatically shuts down my pc after a while, so that will do the trick :P.

It only makes sense for you to shutdown ur comp. overnight when u don't have any special(and important) reason to leave it running. If u think it doesn't boot fast u can hibernate, but remember to have a shutdown occassionally - everyone gets refreshed after a real good sleep.
Did u say "energy saving" ? u'r right, thats a plus.
But whatever the case ur computer runs faster after a shutdown - d memory is light n all that.

I don't agree with you bud.
I'm using windows 2003 on my laptop and there is not any stability problem. I do not think there is that much difference between Linux&Windows.

I meant Windows XP. Windows 2003 is a server, so it's made to run longer.

Since Windows has to weigh its responsibility and share the load for its GUI counterpart, I think it incurs performance bottlenecks. Linux is absolutely pristine clear command prompts only right?

I don't know why that option is missing from the poll, but I usually put my laptop into hibernation at night. Saves power, but yet I have everything still there when I am ready to use it in the morning. I also have a server computer, and it stays running all the time.

Mine gets good week uptimes but a Windows Update or an Anvirus Pattern update normally demands a reboot.

I don't do Windows Updates  and AVG doesn't ask for a reboot, so I guess I'm lucky.

I turn off the monitor at lunch and every nigth, however i only shutdown the PC on weekends/holidays. I think it´s the best compromise, the important thing is not only the money but the environment.

I try *very* hard to save the planet (go ahead, laugh*). I even switch off the monitor when I step out to take a leak.  My home laptop turns off the screen after 3 minutes of inactivity.

I don't have VPN Access so i'm forced to leave one of my workstaitons on to do a reverse ssh tunnel.
|

We do the Microsoft Shuffle (reboot) every night for good measure. The machines are on all night to run the backup software and pickup database logs.
