Yes there have been, many over the years. A simple query of the lounge post database showing posts where a new user has made only 1 or 2 ever within minutes of creating an account then no more after that would reveal them. The most recent was some kind of conference with two separate accounts posting nearly the identical message, I forget what it was exactly but it was clearly an attempt at viral marketing.
It's no a huge issue I know, but I consider the suggestion board a hopper to throw in anything that might be useful and I'm certain we're going to see a rise in this kind of marketing attempt in future.

Thanks for the report. We have an email component that sends out a confirmation address on signup and sometimes that reports an invalid address, even when the address is correct. It could be the server on the other end thinking we are spammers and pretending no one is home.

Since MVP status is based on how high a user's average message rating is, how about displaying a user's average rating in their profile? There's already an average article rating. Why not have one for messages?

Hi,
First of all, thanks for the site. It would be very very difficult for me (and for many people) to learn how to do things correctly without your help and all the people that contribute here.
I would like to propose one thing. When one is reading an article, one has the possibility to add comments, ask things, etc... below the article. To navigate in this "posts" there are three buttons: "First", "Prev", "Next". But...
How about a "Last" button?
The post is organized with the newest messages first and the oldest at the end. Personally, I find better to start with the oldest message, because the problems are most of the times before the solutions and it is possible to find the same problem that one is having in those posts.
To go to the oldest... it is necessary to go through all the pages (some articles have a lot of pages), and then to come back to the beggining another time as the messages are being read.
Because of that I would like to ask the site-admins to add the "last" link-button to the template of articles' sites.
That's all.

Nothing much to say, really. My opinion is that moderation will make the forums (programming forums) a better place.

I think the forums can look out for themselves. Look at what we have survived so far - kyle, link2006, jeremy, etc., etc. The forums are still healthy, and we always have the Abuse button, and there's always the Court of Last Resort (aka email Chris).

I listed some of the people whose posts - in my opinion - were "off message", relative to what this site is about. Trying to carry on an adult conversation, and being repeatedly sidetracked into "what is appropriate" discussions, is not being on message, IMHO.
I think the forums were doing a good job of absorbing his rants (before he left). As a positive side note, I have seen time and again that some members (not heard from in a while) will speak up when a post crosses the lunacy/drivel boundary.

i don't agree fully. as I already said in the lounge, such bad guys are pulling the forums quality down.
i can understand the need of moderators, like i understand those who don't want any.
in this, i think "moderator" is a term that means too much power into the hands of a single body. but what if this leads into something constructive though ?
for my part, the only sysAdmin should remain Chris, but brahmma's idea interrests me in the sense that i think we could use of some "forums editors".
those guys would be responsible of putting those bloddy <pre> tags around code samples posted as is, move some threads to the right forums, mark a post as repost/cross-post/abuse for deletion (note that i don't give them the power of deleting posts by themselves, but why not after all).
those editors would not be responsible of making the police on their forums.
and as they might have a level high enough, not anyone could obtain this status.
i propose that MVP members and/or protectors could do this job. or only the SysAdmin could choose who deserves the status...

Well put. That is what actually I had in my mind. With the overwhelming number of posts that are omnipresent (some will ask it almost in all the forums, no matter what kinda question it is); while some other will have source code with HTML tags swallowed by the browser  . The idea of moderation is nice; IMO it will certainly increase the quality of the forums. But it is completely up to the Sys Admin to decide.

The voting system is there for a reason. If someone votes your post a 1, it usually means he disagrees with what you posted. I don't see why you expect everyone who votes on your posts to have to explain why they disagree.

Naw. It's a frickin' threaded web-based forum system. You click, you type, you preview, you type some more, when it looks right you post. People who can't figure that out aren't gonna do well with their coding either. What, really, do we have to gain by babying other programmers?
