Hi,
I am a System admin. I have a task to do call as search and replace.
I want to search the "old server name" in the all files and sub directories in C:\ or e:\ and then replace it with "new server name" and overwrite the file or save the file.
I want to do it using a script in vb. please help me as i am not a programmer.

You will need to be running Windows 2000 Server or 2003 Server - the workstation products cannot run AD.

Hi, i dont know where to post this, so i just post it here. Hopefully someone can help. If this is not the right place, moderator can please help me to move it?
I'm using window xp pro now. i've updated to sp2. i'm using IIS5.1. but i want to upgrade it to IIS6. How can i do that? upgrading to sp2 wont upgrade the IIS? Is Windows Xp Pro support IIS6? I want to use IIS6 in order to integrate with other software. What can i do now? Please advise. Thanks.

XP only supports IIS 5. You need Server 2003 for IIS 6.

Dear All, I'm an ASP.net developer so i donno if this is the right forum...
My problem is with my windows 2003 server
I donno if it's a virus but something is causeing the explorer.exe process to stop and start each 5 seconds
i updated the anti virus and scanned the drives but no viruses were found, maybe i need a windows update but as the explorer keeps restarting i can't open it from there so i would need a link to download the needed update from another pc and install it on the server
It's kinda urgent so i would appreciate quick response

Can you read the security/system/application log events? They might give you a better view on the problem.

I believe you can run Event Viewer from Safe Mode; try it and check the Application and System logs for clues.

Or, if you have another machine, you can connect the Manager (Right-click My Comptuer -> Manage) to the Win2K3 box and look at the event log that way.

Q:Your work at small pics were so successful that a chain of
sweat shops ask you to provide network advice to them. Sweaties already
has a server-based network. The server that holds the company
inventory, ordering ,sales, time,tracking and employee information and provides
internet connection is located at the store across the street from a
small pics.Three other sweaties is having stores in town connect to a
modem on the central server through dial-in phone lines.
Sweaties is having problems with heavy traffic and slow server response
at 08h00 and 15h00 each day. they do not know wherethis traffic
originates from or what type of traffic it is .they also do not know whether
this will warrant a change in their connection methods .####what kind of
service do you suggest will help them assess their traffic situation
and provide answers about possible network expansion ? what type of
things can they find out ? what other kinds of service might they also use
,given their network configuration?

Hi all,
First, I'll describe my setup.
I have a home server machine (pretty much a NAS), which is set up to enter standby after 15 minutes.
To access the files from a system on my network, I currently manually send a WOL packet (via a command line tool) with the appropriate MAC, and it all works fine. The server wakes up and the files and printer are available.
All of the clients are running XP.
Is it possible for the clients to automatically send a WOL packet when I either click the shared folder or try to access the printer? i.e. if any activity goes to the server's IP.
Can I write a script to do this?
If not, how can it be done programatically? (c++/MFC, VB, .net)
Also, I've noticed that once I have accessed the server from another PC, the connection is still active and so the server never enters standby, even after an hour of inactivity. I think this is due to the TCP keep alive packet.
Can I terminate the TCP connection after say 10 minutes of inactivity, again via a script or programatically?
I've seen programs which allow you to manually kill the TCP connection, but my goal is to have a completely transparent setup, so the user doesn't need to worry about what state the server is in.
Is there possibly a program out there that does this already?

I don't think you're going to have much luck with this. You'd have to intercept the call going to the Network Redirector on the kernel level to know that you should send the WOL packets to the machine. This is probably going to be only do-able in C++.
Do I have any clue exactly what needs to be done? Nope. Do I have any examples? Nope.

Hello to all. I've been staring at this administrative task for a while to try and help folks in helpdesk environments. I'm comfortable scripting vbs/wmi to do removal of specific network printers at login (using WMI RemovePrinterConnection), but for the life of me I've yet to see anything which can process it for all users on a particular station w/o having the user login.
The only other option I've seen has been to blow away the user profile which is excessive.
In particular I'm targeting older 2000 stations which are getting a lot of driver corruption.
Any recommended tools or resources I can read on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

Printers aren't installed in the user context. They're installed in the machine context, meaning if one person installs/removes a printer, it's installed/removed for everyone on that machine. What IS done in the user context is each user gets their own set of default printer settings.
