I am using VWD and VB.
I have a Gridview with an EditItemTemplate containing a DropDownList behind a Label (See Below).
The DDL is populated by ODBC database.
When the users clicks Edit, I would like to set the DDL to value it currently contains.
Also, I would like to set the Focus to that DDL control, so at least is on the screen after post.
Any ideas would be appreciated!

Hi all,
I have a web service that accepts requests from users. I would like to be able to save the results of those requests to file on the server, outside the web directory. The results will be generated by the web service, so I don't think there is great risk of saving unwanted files.
Has anyone done this before, or can anyone suggest possible solutions to doing this?

I had a similar requirement some tiome back... as far as I know (which isn't saying much...) this can't be done (security don't you know, ooh...), but as it was an acceptable solution for me to save the files within another, different web directory I was able to get around this by:
a) saving the files to the current one;
b) using an FTP class to transfer them to the second directory;
c) deleting the originals;
Maybe not so elegant, but it did the job...

Hi Fred,
thanks a lot for your comments. Everything I've read seems to indicate that it is not possible. One solution that I have come up with (which I don't like) is the following:
a) Select a web directory where all the files will be saved
b) Prepend the path where the file should be saved as the first line in the file.
c) Have a process that polls the directory
d) Have the process read the destination path, remove the first line from the file and move the file.
While, this works fine, I don't like having the process polling all the time. It would be great if the web service could launch a console app that took care of moving the file and then terminated. However, this results in access problems.
Hopefully a better solution will come along soon.

Can you not just grant whatever user context the web service is running the rights to the folder where you want to save them?

Yes, I think you can do that. But I want to be able to save it anywhere (the WS user would specify where to save it).

I have a problem in ASP.net.
i have 2 window one parent that contains a list box. and one add button.
on click of add button i am opening a popup.
the popup window contans
2 list box
1st Available Fields
2nd Selected fields.
and 2 buttons ADD and Remove
Click on Add button will add item from list one to list 2
Click on Remove button Remove item from list 2 to list 1
i want to pass complete list of selected items to parent window listBox.
How it can be done,i will welcome any help or comment.
list of selected items i am able to pass to parent but only string i can paas.i want to populate the list box of parent window without any post back of parent window.

Say I have 4000 users who are instructed to go get 100mb file x from http://go-get-it-boys.com/x at the same time.
The server is running IIS, default install, nothing fancy. Now how will IIS handle it? Will it be sequential, i.e. user 2 will be able to start as soon as user 1 finishes, or will it be in parallel? And if in parallel, how parallel, i.e will there be 4000 threads created?

Anyway don't do that with only one server. Max you want is probably 40 and IIS will handle that sequentially.

Say I have several machines, there will still need to be one machine (or more, i don't know how those things work) that distributes the load. Wouldn't that machine, the one that distributes the load, also get jammed with so many requests?
Say I am a manager with 1000 employees and everyday I get requests to lick 4000 envelopes. I delegate the work to my 1000 employees, but the job itself of delegating the work might not be something that one manager can handle.
So how do big companies, like MS, able to host a file on one mirror and still handle the load?

Hi,
I'm sure this is basic, but it's always confused me... (easiy done..)
Cookies set using Jvascript are simple name-value pairs, wheras those set using ASP.NET are name/key-values... how can I set a cookie using a JS function then later on read it back into my code-behind using ASP.NET? And vice versa, how can I set one in code-behind then read it back using JS on the client? Whenever I've tried I get "object not set" kind of errors due, I imagine, to their different structres..
What am I missing (apart from a brain?)

The answer is that running 64-bit Windows does have an affect on your ability to run ASP.NET 1.1 in IIS 6. ASP.NET 1.1 only supports running in 32-bit mode. Fortunately, IIS 6 on 64-bit Windows can run in either 64-bit mode or 32-bit mode.
The following steps to run IIS 6 in 32-bit mode can be found in our MSDN documentation:
Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
Type the following command to enable the 32-bit mode:
cscript %SYSTEMDRIVE%\inetpub\adminscripts\adsutil.vbs SET W3SVC/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 1
Type the following command to install the version of ASP.NET 1.1 and to install the script maps at the IIS root and under:
%SYSTEMROOT%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\aspnet_regiis.exe -i
Make sure that the status of ASP.NET version 1.1.4322 is set to Allowed in the Web service extension list in Internet Information Services Manager.
After following these instructions, the issue still wasn't resolved. In fact, the script maps for the web application were not being properly updated. I had the customer execute the "aspnet_regiis -ua" which would remove all versions of ASP.NET from the machine. To reinstall the ASP.NET 1.1 again, you then need to reissue the "aspnet_regiis -i" command (use "aspnet_regiis -i -enable" if you are using Windows 2003). This should allow you to run ASP.NET 1.1 on IIS 6.
Keep in mind, however, that IIS 6.0 cannot run in both 64-bit mode and 32-bit mode at the same time. By running IIS 6.0 in 32-bit mode on 64-bit Windows, ASP.NET 2.0 applications will also run in 32-bit mode.

A while ago a friend of mine was working on a website for the RPG Final Fantasy. He was using html image maps to interlink the maps, outline areas, and place shops/quests/etc. After watching him try out a large number of crappy freeware image mappers and using up the trial periods on a couple better image mappers that costed way too much, I decided to try and write a decent freeware version myself. After a couple weeks of coding and beta-testing I now have a first release version finished.
It's written in C# (requires the .NET Framework 2.0) and I'm releasing it under the terms of the GNU General Public License. Hi,
I am creating a search utility for my ASP.NET web application. There is a page Search.aspx, which accepts the search criteria and sends the search request to web service, which does the processing of that request and sends back the reply as a dataset.
The search page then binds the dataset to the datagrid and is displayed on the page. When I navigate through various pages of datagrid, I can see the results on the same page (Search.aspx)as paging is applied on the grid. But when I click on browser back button, I want the page load event to be executed, which is not being executed. I tried with following code in Page_Load event of Search.aspx
Response.CacheControl = "no-cache"
Response.AddHeader("pragma", "no-cahe")
Response.Expires = -1
But page load event does not occur. Please let me know the solution for this issue. Thanks in advance.

Hi
I would like to set the style attribute of a div via the use of the code behind.
The div has a id and is runat="server" so I can use it in the code behind
its initial style visibility property is set to hidden, in the code behind I would like to set it as visible given a condition.

hi
i have a control it has a grid and the grid has some buttons(ImageButton)
and each button has it's own OnCommand method but the commands aren't execute clicking will only cause to postback to a another page
i just don't know why it should happen ?

This is just a guess, but is sounds like you have a postbackurl on your imagebutton. That is normally why you would be posting back to another page.

I was able to get the above. However, I want to hide the items until I check the ListItems checkbox (the circle). Then unchecking the ListItems checkbox, the listed items disappear.
