My company is using SQL Server 2000 for our OLTP DBs and I have been writing reports using SSRS. The time has come for us to start a datawarehouse because of the amount of processing some of these reports entail. I have done research online about OLAP design and concepts, but I would really like recommendation of a good book that is full of case studies, design examples, etc. Many thanks.

You can architect an application to automatically create new database fields on the fly.
This will allow you to extend what you are storing in your application as the application grows.
What becomes difficult, is reporting against the fields you've added. Reports are usually a fairly straight forward thing, unless there are undetermined fields you need to report against.
Either way, if I understand your question, these approaches have been taken in many products, but require a seperate meta-data database to do a prelimary data build before running queries.
If you are looking to accomplish this because there is no design yet defined for your application. I strongly suggest that you put it down on paper before you try and put it together.
The reason why I believe that planning and architecting is so important is because if you ask anyone to go into a 40 story building, knowing that the builders didn't use blueprints to build it, instead, they just threw it together, the people you ask to go into that building will tell you NO.

Is Microsoft planning to upgrade the SiteMap object in .NET 2.0 to actually work or is the underlineing design intrinsically flawed? This is the question I asked myself repeatedly in the last few days and I think I finally was able to understand why the SiteMap object will never truely represent most site maps correctly. Before I explain the issue I wanted to know what others thought.

The whole issue around SiteMaps, is that they are built using the Provider pattern. This means that you can "easily" implement your own SiteMap that drops in, as long as it follows the Site Map Provider pattern. MS never intended their implementation of SiteMaps as being the "be all and end all" of site maps.

The fact that they used a provider pattern makes sense and I have no problem with that aspect. However, the idea that the component can only model Trees is a bit limited. Many sites typically have more complex connectivity then a tree is able to describe. Any resolution to this will always seem forced and cumbersome.

So This is what I found. The SiteMap is flawed because it assumes that every site can be modled as a Tree structure. Given a site that models a network topology and it crashes. I would guess most sites actually model a real network rather then a tree. The reason you can't model a network for a SiteMap is simple. Given any two nodes in the network you can not assume any one path will lead from node to node. Hence resolution of the path fails. Typically this causes the developer to try a variety of other approaches to resolve this ambiguity of path.

First you talk about a design pattern and then you ask where you can find the code? You either want the design to implement your own, or you want the code?
Why not take a look at MatLab? Mathematically, if you want to do it, MatLab will help you - more importantly, if you want to design something you can learn a lot from looking at the market leaders.

Do u know how sharepoint gets integrated with microsoft office?
As in.. in sharepoint 2003 you can check out word files, edit them in word and save them on the server.
If you upload a .txt file, you can check it out, but there is no option for editing in notepad, and if u save it gets saved locally not on the server as notepad is not integrated with sharepoint.
Can someone explain to me how does sharepoint recognize a word file and put the "Edit in Microsoft Word" feature?

SharePoint 2003 uses many different technologies. One technology is Web Parts. Web Parts can be constructed to access anything you need on your system. In addition to Web Parts. Microsoft also uses custom assemblies that are built specifically for the Office Products.
Together, these technologies communicate behind the scenes allowing for tighter integration.
Also, there are custom Outlook Web Parts built right into SharePoint 2003, which will allow any user to customize their "MySite", by adding the Outlook Calendar, Tasks, etc. To any area of their personal MySite page.
The idea of checking files in and out is part of SharePoint lists. This is built into the list API, which is configurable and can be turned off.

But what I really wanted to know is how does Sharepoint integrate with Microsoft word or excel.
If i put a file on Sharepoint and then edit it, it opens in excel witha check in/out option.
How does Sharepoint make the file open in excel is not a problem.. I did that first by modifying a xml file (Drive:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web server extensions\60\Template\Xml\Docicon.xml) and then creating a small activex control that searches for that particular file depending upon its extension and then opening it.
The main problem is how do i make the application (take for example Photoshop) have the check in/out option.
Do you have any idea how to do this?

I hope this is the right section for this type of question. What would be the better route to go for a new enterprise web application from the following (if I missed something or seem confused on something, please fill me in).
1) ATL/ASP.Net & MSSQL
2) COM/DCOM/ASP.Net & MSSQL
3) ASP.Net (C#/VB.Net) & MSSQL
4) PHP/MySQL
We are looking to be able to scale from 10 users to 50,000 users, and a good secure base. Though, I do code, I am not an expert when it comes to enterprise applications. Our competitors are using COM and ASP/JSP, another competitor is using VB.Net/ASP.Net.
