I have 2 computers connected through a router (local network). One of them (mine, a desktop, connected by cable) used to be called \\hintroom (by this time, I was running XP SP2), but then I installed vista and the computer is no longer called by that name. The other one (a notebook, connects to the router through wireless) and is running XP SP2.
The problem is: when trying to install some applications I get an error message "can't access \\hintroom\documentos p\Bruno - Os meus docs\As minhas imagens"
The thing is:
- There never existed such path at my computer (the desktop) but there are some things that make sense in it:
- "documentos p" stands for "shared documents"
- "Bruno" is the user name for the notebook (the one that has the problem)
- "Os meus docs" stands for "My docs"
- "As minhas imagens" stands for "My Pictures"/"My Images"
I don't know if this is of any relevance, but both setups that caused this (yes, they where only two, so far) where graphic applications (a program for building digital albuns, from Hoffmann, and a Corel plugin, I think)
If you guys could please help I would be greatly apreciated

I didn't install vista yet so I do not know any improvement in communication/networking feature in windows vista. But I'm expereince while install windows xp sp2 and it has some obstacle for me communicate with the other user on the network. This because of the new feature need to be configure its setting to match your networking environment.
My suggestion from here you should read about networking feature of windows vista. It might probably have some feature that improve its security feature and make you difficult to communicate with the other client on the network. I think with a proper condition, you will be able to make your windows vista and xp could be able to communicate with each other.

Ups =S my mistake !! I'm not trying to install the applications on my computer (WinVista), I'm trying to install them in the notebook (WinXP), that's the one throwing the error.

What is the software media that you want to install (CDROM, network, USB HARD DISK...)?

Both HDD:
- Corel Update (downloads automatically, but then can't run it) and
- Hofmann Digital Album (download too)

Try to check windows firewall in your computer. Make sure that you configure windows firewall properly on your computer.

Is there a way to have a Windows XP Scheduled Task run at system shutdown?
If not, what I really need to do is execute ipconfig /release (or equivalent) run at system shutdown.

There is no way to tell the scheduler to execute a task at shutdown. It can, however, be done using Group Policy (Start/Run GPEDIT.MSC) in the Shutdown Script under Computer Configuration, Scripts. All you need to do is create a .CMD file to launch that command.

Do you have a Windows-based DHCP server? Go to Scope Options for the scope, the Advanced tab, set the Vendor class to be 'Microsoft Options' and tick the option '002 Microsoft Release DHCP Lease On Shutdown Option', and set the value to 1.
The clients will then apply this option the next time they renew their lease. Once this is done, they should do what you want.
If your DHCP server is not based on Windows, the option may still be there, but I don't know how to apply it.

For security reasons, you can't. It's impossible to launch a process remotely as interactive unless the target machine is Windows 2000 SP2 or LOWER. It cannot be done on Windows 2000 SP3 and above, including XP and 2003, and expressly documented as such here[^].

Iam Leela Krishna from India. I would like to know is there any to find the maximum length of PATH (system environment) Variable on a particular machine.
As you might be aware that some windows systems at present support 1024 and 2048 characters, Is there anyway to find whether a particular machine is having the maximum limit of PATH is 1024 or 2048.
Also is there anyway to find the list of PATCHES and HOT FIXES installed on a machine, this can help me atleast to find out if a machine has the Microsoft Hot Fix for increasing PATH length.

Try to use the SET command line and it will display a list environment variable in your computer. Try to use this command SET > Env.txt to save all of the result to a file. And you might need to programming to read and count the content of the file line by line. Hope this would help you.

Well, first you must have the disc for whichever operating system you want to install next. When you put the disc in, you should have an option to format your hard drive, then install your new os.
There's no way to just uninstall Vista without installing something in it's place first.

Do you perform a clean installation of windows vista or upgrade from your windows xp? I never install vista, but if you upgrade from windows xp, did it ask you to save a previous operating system file. If you so you might be able to uninstall it by trying to find in add/remove program feature.

OK. First, I suspect your using 2 ID's to post on CodeProject.
Second, this site is centric to development and the support of Microsoft Windows, not Liux. You'd probably be muchbetter off asking all of your Linux and Mac OS X questions on a linux central board.
