Now that I've already voted and can't go back and change my vote (nudge), it occurs to me that I should have selected "Participating in online communities." Not only that, but that one should really be at 100%, because anyone who bothered to vote in the poll is doing exactly that.

It's got to be one of the top uses for a computer, and easily the best tool for researching investments. Certainly there are expensive services that will be happy to give you juicy stock picks for a hefty fee, but the information you need is available without cost from a variety of sources if you're willing to do the homework.
Another top use for me is banking and bill payment. It's convenient and, though there are some risks, relatively safe. At least, it's a lot safer than handing your credit card to a youngster in a restaurant to pay your dinner tab. Even mailed checks are no longer safe, now that crooks have learned how to bleach ink off of a written instrument and redirect the funds.

I like playing with stocks, but it's not something I do consistently. I have always done well, 94% returned one recent year and never a loss yet, but when you have only a couple hundred$ to play with it doesn't have much impact. Having been stuck in subsistence wage jobs for a dozen years or so my forays in the market have been brief and rare. I'm hoping to change that this year after some long neglected expenses are finally out of the picture.

My two computers with the help of MythTV (www.mythtv.org[^]) is my PVR and I currently have around 400 hours of recorded content taking darn near 800GB of hard drive space good thing 320GB drives are like $80 now...

John, wouldn't it be cheaper (and probably more convenient) to use a DVR (with content regularly offloaded to DVD-RW)? There are several reasons for this. When I started this ~3 years ago there was only TIVO. I was very turned off by that because I did not like the enormous cost of upgrading their hard drives (3 to 5X what the market price for a drive) and subscription price so I went out and bought a capture card and stared recording in windows. After a few months of this I realized that the windows software for my card was of low quality I looked for an open source solution and after trying freevo I found mythTV and I loved it.
The other reason is that none of these devices have all the features of MythTV and anywhere near the upgradabliity. One cool feature is the ability to login from the internet to a web page that lets me schedule a recording using the program guide that is 2 weeks in advance on one of my 3 tuners.
