Funny, you've already judged his car without even having hit the brakes on your own yet. I don't see a guy with a beat up clunker. I see a guy whoses stranded because his car broke.

So long as it stays in the signature and doesn't spill in to the posts I don't have a problem with it.
I advertise developer events in my signature all the time (as you may have noticed). Scottish Developers are currently in the process of gearing up for next year so I've got a bit of a plea at the moment, (The last event I was advertising, until this morning, was Developer Day 4 - but the registration is now full and so is the stand-by list of 100) but when the event schedule starts to fill up for 2007 you'll see events.

I don't know if you read the rest of this thread, but here's the problem.
Let's say the upcoming Scottish Developers Conference had as its primary theme "the overcomplexity and inefficiency of Microsoft development tools". Wouldn't it be hard to keep that thought from "spilling into" your posts? Wouldn't you be tempted to point out the connection when someone complained of complexity or inefficiency? And - even if you weren't - wouldn't the signature itself stand as a silent (and to many, an irritating) protest?

No. For example. On November 2nd Scottish Developers held an event with Ed Gibson (ex-FBI agent and now Microsoft's Chief Security Advisor). That was advertised in my signature for about 2 months. I point out security problems in the programming forums, but I challenge you to find one post where I said "You have a security problem - why not attend this event it will help you get a better understanding" unless the other person EXPLICITLY brought up the subject. (And even then it's only happened about two or three times in as many years)

No. Not really - but then for the last event I organised we had to turn people away because the Health and Safety lot would have thrown a fit.

Well, if my response was "See sig" and left it at that then yes. But if I answered the question without commenting on the event then I don't think anyone's had a problem with that.

Okay....
(1) How does it complicate an already "cluttered" database? You mean Chris Maunder has let you take a peek inside the CP database? I think not
(2) Sign-on/up screen doesn't seem cluttered, are you using a high enough resolution on your screen? I'm at 1280x1024 and all is good
(3) Like Colin said in the other thread, something has to generate revenue for this site to keep it going.

But it is - when signing up, I was asked if I wanted to turn IntelliTXT on or off and needed to make a decision. At the time, I didn't even know what it was, so I was confused. Clutter, confusion, take your pick.

I mentioned in another post that I have the IntelliTxt turned off and you do this by going to Update your Setting next to your member number. There is a checkbox down a little ways that you can uncheck and you know what? No IntelliTxt in the articles when you read them ( at least for me :-> )

Right. But should you have to do this? And if everyone does this - and there's no logical reason why they wouldn't once they get around to it - then the whole program collapses anyway. It's a bad idea.

Nobody's ever complained to me, but it's freeware, and points to a couple programming articles too. I just want people to check out my stuff and let me know if they like it. So far, I've gotten no interest... or maybe the thing is so good that nobody has any comment I think that's in-scope, but I don't think advertising a commercial product is very good. People do it, but they probably shouldn't. When I see it, I think a little less of the person, but I wouldn't bother to bitch them out for it. I have much more important things to bitch people out for.
