The "best book" is going to be the one that is appropriate for your skill level. If you already have a decent background in GDI+ and VB.NET, then a beginner's book isn't going to be the "best". The opposite is also true. If you have no experience in GDI+, then an advanced book is going to be way over your head.
The point is you are the only one who can say which book is the best for you! All we can do is make some suggestions. You're still going to have to do the research to pick what's "best".
Amazon results for GDI+[^].

Set the column mapping type hidden as below:
ds.Tables("yourTableName").Columns("columnYouWantToHide").ColumnMapping = MappingType.Hidden

I have one treeview on my form. now when user check one node of tree view this node added in my datagrid with one single datatable created at run time. now when user add child node of same parent i want to add same child in the child row of same datatable and in the gridview as child row. So how can i do that?

I can't follow this at all...
I'm guessing at what you want here... Datatable rows don't get children. You have to design your table so that each record has a field that points to a parent records primary key in the same table.
RecordID bigint
Name nvarchar(50)
ParentID bigint
Each record has it's own unique RecordId. If a record has a parent, you set its ParentID to the RecordID number of the parent.
RecordID Name ParentID
------------------------------------
1 Mike 0 (0 means "no parent")
2 John 1 (John is a child of Mike)

Hi, I have an MDI form and has a child form. I want to write the command close all child form but I forget the code. As I remember I used to write in the similar code:
Dim Variable as Control<br />
<br />
For Each Control...<br />
Close all form...<br />
Next
I forget it and want to write its again when I click log off. I forget the code and if someone expereince to do the following behavior please send me this sample code. (I use vb.net 2003).

Easily done if you look at the MdiChildren property of your parent form.
For Each f As Form In Me.MdiChildren
f.Close()
Next

I need help on grabbing images from 4 analog color cameras connected to BNC ports of a DVR card (PCI).
How can I get the images to picture boxes in a VB6 program?
I do not require to record video or do motion detection. All I need is to grab still images in bmp or jpeg format on an user input. My problem is as simple as that!
I could not find any windows driver for this hardware but works only with supplied DVR software.
Thanks in advancce for your help!

Your stuck. Without ANY documentation on the card or an SDK kit from the manufacturer of that card, there is nothing you can do. If there is no driver, then there is no way you can get at that card without writing your own driver. And without knowing the ins and outs of that card, that's impossible.

I am using VB.NET 2005 and WinForms. I have a bound (dropdownlist) ComboBox who's selection list is based on another field (City) on the Form. The Combo part is a 1-field query (strName) and I am storing the exact same strName field in the database. My selection list is working OK.
PROBLEMS:
1. What property do I bind to (or both)? .Text or .SelectedValue ??
2. When to Fill the DataSource for the Combo list ?
(before combo displays ?) (before Combo Enter?) (after City changes?)
3. What property do I pass to my stored procedure, when updating Name ?
(.Text or .SelectedVAlue?)
4. The SelectedValueChanged event is firing many times, and it seems to change the value I have selected. How best to deal with this event ... also with the SelectedIndex ?
Where can I find some VERY definitive expanations of EXACTLY how the Combo properties and events work ?
Thanks much,
SMH

You don't bind to anything...
cgai wrote: 2. When to Fill the DataSource for the Combo list ?

After City changes. If you don't know the City, how are you going to know what to put in this second list?
cgai wrote: 3. What property do I pass to my stored procedure, when updating Name ?

The ID of the record that you're updating, which is probably going to be supplied by SelectedValue, but that's entirely dependant on how you've written your code and what you've put into this ComboBox.
cgai wrote: 4. The SelectedValueChanged event is firing many times, and it seems to change the value I have selected. How best to deal with this event ... also with the SelectedIndex ?
If you've written your code correctly, and used the proper events, you shouldn't be seeing this problem.

Hi Dave, thank you for responding ...
Dave Kreskowiak wrote: cgai wrote:

You don't bind to anything...
This stuff is so difficult to explain in text ... I probably was not clear. I'm using my "Name" combobox to enter/update a field in my database ... via a TableAdapter in a DataSet. This is a bound control, so I assume there has to be a binding property ... usually .Text or .SelectedValue (but I'm not sure when to use one or the other, or both).

I'm sure I have not written my VB code correctly, and might have not set properties & events correctly.
I wonder if you would be able to outline how you would design an implementation to my ComboBox scenario ? Any good references would also be appreciated.
Thank you again ...

I can't figure out what your ComboBox scenario is!!
Let's see... Are you saying that you have a ComboBox bound to a table that has a list of Names in it? The user picks a Name, then another ComboBox is supposed to fill with some other information, based on the Name picked??

I'll try my best to outline the scenario:
I am updating a strContactName field (using a ComboBox cboName) in a tblCompany record. There is also a strCity field in the record which filters the list of possible names. There is a dt_tblContactNames DataTable in a dsLookups DataSet.
dt_tblContactNames Fill: "SELECT strContactName FROM tblContactNames WHERE strCity = (my city in this record)" (this is used for the ContactName dropdown list, and it works fine)
When the user clicks the Save button on the Form, the changes are written to the database via a stored procedure, for which I define and pass field values as parameters, in VB code. This technique works fine for all the other fields.
Some issues:
1. After the City and Name are entered, the Name needs to display in the ComboBox text whenever the record is retrieved. It seems like the dropdown list needs to be properly filled, otherwise the Name does not display.
2. I need to bind the cboName control to strContactName ... probably using .SelectedValue, but I don't see why .Text does not work as well ..
3. I need to know when to fill the dropdown list for the ComboBox. Yes, after the City changes, but also when the form is first displayed ...
I have set most of wiring in the Properties window for the ComboBox, but I Call the Fill for the dropdown, and the record Update, in VB code.
I hope that helps explain what I am trying to do ... probably a common scenario.

Hello,
I want to refresh a form. The current finds sql servers on the network which it does. But sometimes it doesn't. I have put the function call in the form load, which calls the function to fill a list box of servers.
I have a button thats called refresh, which calls that function. However, even though it calls that function it does not work the same unless you close the form and open it again.
Is there some way to achieve something that refresh the form without closing and opening it again.
Many thanks in advance,
Steve

Move your code that finds the servers to a seperate method and have it return an array of strings. Create another method that clears and refills the ListBox. That method will be the one to call the method that retrieves the server list. Your code can then be called from anywhere in your form code.
Private Sub Form_Load(blah, blah) blah...
RefreshServerList()
End Sub
.
.
Private Sub Button1_Click(blah, blah) blah...
RefreshServerList()
End Sub
.
.
Private Function GetSqlServers() As String()
Dim Servers As String()
' Build your list of Sql Servers...
Return Servers
End Sub
.
.
Private Sub RefreshServerList()
Dim s As String() = GetSqlServers()
ListBox1.DataSource = s
End Sub

Hi,
I'm having an XML file which is an extraction of a database request. I'd like to read in it with VB.Net like I can do when using direct database connection with command such as datareader for example.
