Don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but a Toshiba is always reliable. I wouldn't go for Dell, HP or Compaq. Best bets are Toshiba, Asus and Samsung, if you want a reliable pc, with Samsung probably your best bet for price. Can't tell you models exactly.

Hi all,
I need to choose one of the following boards to build a new system for our research application.
1) Supermicro X7DA3
2) Tyan Thunder K8WE
3) Supermicro H8DC8
The following requirements should be met-
a) The PCI/PCI-X data trasfers should be at their full speed (i.e. even if I populate all the PCI/PCI-X slots with boards, they all should run at their full speeds). There shouldn't be any delays while transfering data b/n the cards and the memory (best PCI/PCI-X data transfers).
b) the HDD r/w speeds should be very fast (atleast 121MB/s).

The only thing that's going to tell you this is your own testing. All the specs you listed are dependant on the hardware your putting into those slots and the hard drive your using. You're going to have to test it to see if meets your specs. Find a supplier that will let you test the board before you buy it outright.

I have a DSL connection, then it goes to a 2WIRE router that is set to a bridge.
That connects to my LINKSYS wireless router and then my PC connects.
DSL -- 2WIRE --- LINKSYS --- PC ( the PC is connected via cable tho )
I can use Internet Explorer to surf the web just fine
but if I ping www.msn.com, I get a it times out every time.
I disbaled norton and tyhe firewall on the linksys.
I am running win2k.
I cant access the 2wire since it acts as a bridge.
Note: I can ping www.msn.com from the router, but not my pc
Can someone please help?

I can't ping MSN from anything. It's entirely possible that MSN doesn't respond to ICMP Echo request packets. In other words, you can't ping MSN because it won't respond to the request. More and more sites are doing this to reduce their attackable surface.

Well I can ping msn from my router. I was just using it as a test.
The real problem is that I cant receive packets from the outside through my bridge

I want something for my son to where I can make a program that shows a math problem like so

on some sort of hand held. and allows him to draw on the screen so he can cross 3 and put 13. 3rd grade math.
I am trying to keep this as cheap as possible. Anyone know of any brands under a $100? He doesn't need a keyboard, just the pen. And I don't need any phone capabilities either. Just the handheld with pen, thats all.
Any suggestions would be great. I have an Axim, but theres no way hes uses it

How to get IDE device information from registry in Vista? In Windows XP I am able to retrieve that information from following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\Scsi\Scsi Port 1\Scsi Bus 0\Target Id 0\Logical Unit Id 0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\Scsi\Scsi Port 0\Scsi Bus 0\Target Id 0\Logical Unit Id 0
But this path does not exist in Windows Vista. So where should I look in registry now for getting the same information?

The registry was never the supported way of getting this information on Windows XP, so you've just been lucky so far.
If Microsoft doesn't officially document something, they will not generally worry about changing it in a future release, unless doing so breaks a large number of products or some very important products.
WMI is the supported interface.

A friend asked me to try and fix her Windows computer. I found that the HDD was going/gone bad so a replacement was in order. I got the new drive in place as the master and moved the old drive in as slave. Now it was just a matter of booting up from a Windows XP disc, formatting the new drive, and installing the OS. This is the proverbial "cake walk" as I've done it dozens of times. Instead, I spent the next several hours trying to figure out why the CD drive would not work. With a disc in, it will spin up and down intermittingly. I thought it was the drive so I tried a working CD drive from one of my other computers. Same thing. I also tried three other IDE cables just to make sure that wasn't the problem. No luck. To rule out a failing power supply or a bad power connector, I tried several since the machine had lots of unused ones. No matter what I tried, I could not get the CD drive to read, or even recognize, the CD. It might spin up, but then it would always end up presenting me with the "Abort, Retry, or Fail" message. I tried another CD, too. The common denominator among all of these is the IDE controller itself, but I have no way of checking that. So, can you think of anything that I could try to help rectify this problem? Can the CD drive and the HDD share the same IDE cable?

Yes, with the proviso that they are set differently to master/slave. I generally have HDD0 as master#0, DVDCD as master#1, HDD1 as slave#0, if that helps.

I would have unplugged the CD, imaged the drive to drive, rebooted with the new drive in the old drive's slot and the CD hooked back up. Although a clean install is always "best" in the long run, it is so hard to justify via time it takes....

Drive must be formatted with an OS before it can be booted from. This can't be done without the CD drive.

With the exception of once, I've never installed one Windows OS atop another. Too much residual stuff left behind that causes problems later. I'd rather spend an extra 45 minutes up front rather than several hours later on.

well, if you replace the disks without trying to share IDE hosting, yeah it does.
other than that you are back to checking master/slave issues with IDE, or you can drop the old drive into an IDE case on the USB and copy anything that remains after you have your OS installed.
Perhaps I misunderstood the problem, but the way it was stated, you made it sound like the main issue was sharing IDE and the drive was failing, but not completely dead. If completely dead, remove it, move the new drive into it's IDE slot and don't bother trying to share IDE channels.
The other possibility is that it is the IDE controller, not the drive or CD which is why you can't seem to read either.
