What is the best Laptop for doing .Net developement.
working with large databases, image and file manipulation.
Our company usually purchases Dell Laptops.
I was looking at the Dell Inpiron 9400
100 Gig 7200 RPM Drive
1 gig ram
ATI Video card
The biggest drawback I see with this laptop is that it doesn't have a docking station like the Latitude series has.
Please if you have any suggestions let me know.

Well I am not really sure, what the best is but I can tell you what I have been using for the last year or so. I use a toshiba Satelite Pro, I extended the memory on it, so I basically have 1 GIG, and it works like a dream, I have no complaints. I have VS2003, VS 2005, SQL server 2000, sql 2005, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop, Opera Browser, The Whole Office Suite, Firefox, and a myriad of other programmes, a couple of games on there, Broadband Internet and it hasn't complained once! I watch DVD's on it. I think I only paid about £500 for it.
I have left it running for weeks on end on my home desk, it never complains. I am definetly considering another toshiba early next year!!

My Alienware m9700 rocks for dev. I got it specifically for the 17" screen and big keyboard. It's not one you'd want to carry around all the time, though (yeah it's heavy).

I've got a Latitude D820, without a docking station. But it's got a nice screen - not that TrueLife cr*p that the consumer-level models have. But even with a 1.66 GHz proc / 7200 rpm drive / basic video card / 1Gb ram I get some of the fastest compilation speeds I have ever seen! Or maybe that's 'cause I'm not including any Windows files... But in any case, I've been *very* happy with it.
Just a hint, if you didn't think of this already - make sure you get the OS installation disks - and XP pro, at that. Not home or mce. That way you can wipe your hard drive and get rid of all the OEM stuff that's pre-installed. And then install drivers via Windows to avoid even more unwanted software.

The machine would ahve to support booting off a USB device. Most new machine can do this.
Install DOS on it, and write your code as a DOS app in C or C++ and it should work. As for HOW to read the BIOS stuff, you'd have to consult the programmers guide for the BIOS your working with. Check with the manufacturer's site to see if you can get some information on it.

I am about to buy a new computer and is having some problems.
I have no experience at all on RAID. From what I understand, RAID 0 increase performance since two disk are sharing the work load. RAID 1 is reduce the risk of disk failure.
However, I have some questions?
1.) If I buy a pc with RAID 0, later, can I change it to RAID 1? Is it just a matter of setting jumpers?
2.) For RAID 1 config, if one drive fail, do I get any notification in such failure(so that I know it had failed)? How do I get my data back from the working drive?
3.) This is unrelated, but anyone know the difference between the Pentium D process and the Core 2 processor? Core 2 cost more, I assume it is better?

One more thing, does the RAID 0 config really boost performance a lot? Or just very little?

Backup all your data, re-build the RAID array as RAID1 (this will delete everything from the drives), restore the system from backups. No jumper settings are used, just software.

You should get a monitoring program with the RAID controller that tells you about drive failures. Replace the failed drive with a wworking one and the array will be restored automatically.

hi,
what libraries can i use inside a driver? i mean for instance the kernel32.lib, user32.lib etc.cause as i know these two libs reside in user space in memory, or doesnt it matter where they are`?

You cant use any usermode libs or dlls in a kernel mode driver.
You can use ntoskernel.exe, hall.dll, ndis.sys and so on.

Hi i tried to format a NetApp array level device using ioctls. somehow it is corrupting the disk so that the disk cant be accessed again. After this corruption even if i try to format using disk management console it does format but i can never access this drive using drive letter. It can however be accessed by mounting it on another directory. DOing reboot two to three times will solve th problem But without reboot , do anybody know how to validate this configurtion.

i have asus A7V600 motherboard it detech the harddrive and show in bios, when out from bios it give error that primary drive fail at port 0. it is the same port i have attached.
mb have asusA7v600
processor 2500+ Amd authlon xp
i have checked the drive on other computer its working fine.
i have also updated the bios from asus web site but problem not solved.
help me plz.

Did you try another hard drive on your motherboard? It's possible the port is bad. In either case, you're best source of information is ASUS, not us.

A tape drive of mine recently started ejecting tapes a few seconds after loading them. Everything I have found says to reload the firmware. I went to the support site and downloaded the latest firmware. The downloadable version of their diagnostic program (TapeRx 4.6) no longer supports firmware updates. The previous version and apparently a version (TapeRx 4.6+) not available for download does. Does anyone happen to have an earlier version available?

Hi all,
I've just buyed a Core 2 Duo at 2.4 Ghz - E6600. It's installed on an asus P5B motherboard. All seems to work fine excepts for the temperature. The Bios reading and the Probe II is around 60º C in idle mode and the fan is all time running. If I used the Everest software that discriminates the temperature between the 2 cores they mark 43 and 47º C. when I test with Sandra benchmarks and when doing the Multimedia test the temperatue raise until 68º (52 a 54º C with Everest).
If I touch the CPU it's hot but not in an extrem point. Are this values correct for a Conroe CPU or are them dangerous?

I believe the maximum recommended temperature for the Core 2 duo is 60º (Have a look at the intel website).
I have a E6600 as well as I can tell you that my Gigabyte motherboard reads the cpu temp as 19º on startup and the cpu fan won't even start to kick in until the temperature rises a bit.
If you think you might need a new CPU heatsink and thermal grease I'd recommend the Zalman 9500 CPU fan, and the Zalman ZM-STG1 thermal grease.

I initially had the standard Intel heatsink installed and it worked without any issues. But because I plan to overclock the E6600 I figured I might as well get some better cooling. So I now have the Zalman 9500 installed. Works great. It is rather large so if you'd probably want to check you case for clearance etc.

The maximum temperature specification is for case temperature, measured at the center of the outside of the heat spreader. Monitoring programs report the temperature of the on-die integrated sensor, which is higher than the case temperature.

I installed Conroe X6800 processor on asus P5WDG2-WS Pro Mobo and 'm running it at 15% overclock specs. The temperatures are still under 45 even under heavy processing loads with Intel stock cooling fan. I used OCZ silver thermal compound rather than the stock one.

After reinstalling the fan the temperature decreased near 10 degrees. Now, measuring with Core Temps it has a little bit more than 40 degrees that it's pretty fine.
