I need to enumerate all connected devices and decide which device is an external(removable) storage device like DiskOnKey or portable CD-ROM drive.
I want to be able to distinguish a USB keyboard (or mouse) from those I've mentioned.
I call SetupDiGetDeviceRegistryProperty with property=SPDRP_DEVTYPE but it returns with error for almost all devices installed.
Any ideas how can I sort devices by their type: Audio, Keyboard, Mouse, External Storage, etc. ?

There aren't two kinds of threads, a thread can be running in either user mode or kernel mode. (Also called ring 3 and ring 0, respecitively). A user-mode thread is what you're familiar with, they are restricted in what CPU instructions they can use, and what memory they can read/write/execute. A kernel-mode thread has full access to the entire system.

Thanks, but restarting isn't the problem. I needed to boot in "Safe Mode".
Well, I actually worked it out. I first backed up the boot.ini file and then hacked it via my program. Added the "/safeboot:minimal" switch, and also added a reg entry in the RunOnce key to launch the app(s) that needed to run in safe mode in the first place. Once done I again change the boot.ini file and restart the OS. The only problem is that you have to be logged as Administrator to hack the ini file.
It's not as elegant as I had hoped for but as for now it gets me by. All this is for is system repair and cleaning when/if we get malware infections.

Hi
I am using WMI to get information about running processes on a local machine. But in the case of cpu_percantage, it always shows 99% for wmiprsve process (which is in fact collecting data) and all other processes have 0% cpu usage!
I checked it in Task Manager, it shows only 2% for the named process and shows reasonable usages for other running processes....
Is there any way that I can get cpu percentages from WMI?
(I know about .NET Processes Object, but I should use WMI or any other way that should not use .NET FCL.)

I have an old version of windows 2000and iwant to integrate Service Pack 4in a new bootable Windows 2000 bootable CD. The process is called slipstreaming. I have tried already so many times, from diferent web sites, but none of them worked.
Do you know a site where i can find the process explained and also that worked by you?

1. Copy the folder i386 from the CD to your harddisk C:\W2KCD
2. Extract the Service Pack (w2ksp4.exe -x) to your harddisk C:\W2KSP
3. Integrate the SP into Windows: D:\W2KSP\i386\update\update.exe -s:C:\W2KCD

Hi,
I am writing an ASP.NET web application to run reports against our Active Directory. Eventually we expect to have 30000 users in our AD. In general, users will run reports with filters that will restrict data returned from the AD. However, it is possible that users will run reports that return information for all users in our AD.
We are worried that the AD might be overloaded by running these LDAP queries. My question is, should I query the AD directly, or create a cache of all users (a DataSet) that is updated every few hours that I query instead?
Ideally, I would query the AD directly. I ran a report directly against the AD that returned a few simple user properties for 20000 users and CPU usage on one of our two domain controllers increased to 25% for about 1 second.
Any suggestions very welcome. I am not sure of the best way to proceed here.

In my opinion, I support you to use the dataset to cache all user information. This will reduce an overload to your server. But you have to make sure that all user information in your AD is change frequenctly or not. You should set an interval to update an information from your AD based an information of each user is updated on your server.

I'm on Windows Xp sp1, and i ran "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\WINDOWS\inf\msnetmtg.inf,NetMtg.Remove" to remove netmeeting completely because it was cousing me memory problems; i have recently re_installed Netmeeting and can now manage the memory problem but know it just won't start completely, i have already set up the "conf" with all my data / settings, but when i go to start netmeeting itself it just shows the splash then goes away: are their any fixes for this problem, and if their is what are they?
The problem could be that i have'nt gotten all the dll's needed to run netmeeting cuz when i was deleting it i just got rid of the entire folder. but all the dll's that it whan'ted it has because the error check did'nt asked for it, pluss i got a friend to just send me their entire netmeeting folder, and netmeeting still fails to start.

Remove it using Add/Remove Programs/Windows Components, reboot, then reinstall using the same procedure from the original CD. You may have to reapply SP1 after the reinstallation, as some of the files used may have been updated by the Service Pack.

ok i found the cure.
You won't see netmeeting from "Add/remove programs/windos components" but what i did was install the inf itself all over again.
the msnetmtg.inf i think that officially stated to Windows that its a jenuwine program or something, can someone explain what different, only when i reinstall msnetmtg.inf netmeeting works again!
Even though conf.exe has all the resources it needs to start but it does'nt if msnetmtg.inf is not registard?

Your server won't have any access to any of this information.
The most your server is going to get is the information in the Http Headers, meaning the host IP address and its hostname. With an "ipchanger", the best you can do is ban the entire subnet that they're on. This, of course, will also ban legit users on that same subnet.
You could also write an ActiveX control that the users would have to install on their machines. You'd also have to re-code the site to use the information passed back by this control to determine the probable identity of that person. Also, you'll probably piss off legit users with this requirement too.
The bottom line is, the best solution is to upgrade the required information you need to register a user to include more "personal" and trackable information. You'll also have to be more careful about who you let use your site.

So I've tried settin up a farm. So far so good. Both farmed machines can ping each other and the Cluster IP. The problem is no other computer can ping the cluster IP. Obviously that defeats the whole reason of having a farm if no one can see the cluster IP. Help?

Hi, my laptop has a restoration feature which allow me to erase the current system and install windows directly on the machine. But last week, i have perform a clean install of windows xp and accidently delete the resoration partition. Now windows xp is running very slow and i want to restore back to original operating system (windows 2000) but i already delete it. So I could not install the previous license operating system. Under the laptop there is a CDKEY for the windows that i have licese with. But now i lost the software. I don't want to buy another windows license because it will cost me a price.
Could any one give me any suggestion to solve this problem?
