Its rather simple: The .Net Compact Framework is aimed at devices like mobile phones and pockets pcs. It is smaller compared to the normal framework which is aimed at 'normal' computers. You cannot mix them. You have to decide what platform you are aiming at.

alright, as far as i known, there are infrared class library for .NET Compact Framework, but for normal .NET framework, I dun think it has, am I rite?
Actually I'm trying to design two application between Mobile Device and Desktop. I wish to use the Infrared to send data from one another between desktop and mobile device.
When I call the Infrared class as reference in mobile application, there is no prob, but when i move to normal desktop/pc application, i did the same way to call the infrared reference but i add the reference from the recent reference tab, i guess tat must be the prob occur rite?
basically how to call the infrared in normal windows application? Is it the same as in smart device application?

To be honest I don't have a clue on how to use infrared neither on smart devices nor on desktops  . It might be that the CF probably has a better handling on this issue than the normal .Net framework but this is only a guess.

Hello everyone,
This is a hard question to place in a specific category, so I hope you don't mind that I post this question here.
I am working on a project where we are looking into combining several products to create a streamlined well performing administration system for the company I work for. The products involved are Jeeves (an ERP system), Sharepoint and Microsoft CRM. I managed to connect Jeeves to the sharepoint portal, but I didn't have the time yet to look into CRM yet.
At this point I linked Jeeves to the sharepoint portal using a webservice that encapsulates the functionality of the Jeeves system and some custom webparts for Sharepoint, it works great, but I get the feeling this way I get one big bunch of links between various parts of various systems. So I am also looking into using Biztalk to untie these links and create a better maintainable solution.
My question is: Has anyone ever tried linking Microsoft CRM 3.0 to a sharepoint portal and what was your experience with this matter?

I'm having a problem with a program I'm working on, which uses plugins.
-The plugin is declared on one Assembly, as a class.
-Other plugin assemblies have classes that inherit from this plugin.
-The main application loads all assemblies in the root dir, and loads classes with the BaseType name of the plugins name.
Now when I try to load the plugins, they can't be converted to the plugin type! It seems that the base type and the plugin type are different, but I know they aren't. I even checked to see if the GUID is the same.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong here? I'm pretty stuck, and can't go on with this project if I can't find a way out

Instead of using a BaseType Class that they must inherit from, have you tried specifying an Interface that they must implement?

The problem has been resolved.
By the way, I couldn't use an interface, like all the normal examples on the net, because my plugin object has to inherit from another object and it has to have custom code in order for the plugins to work properly. This is why I could not use an interface.

Well you can inherit from some class and still implement another interface.

Let me make myself a bit more clear: I have 38 plugins already built, which implement this class. I worked a long time on them, and they are all working perfectly, so a complete redesign would make me have to strangle myself.
Turns out the problem was that I had two copies of the library containing the Plugin class being built. Although they were exactly the same, code-wise; maybe the version could of been different or something, resulting in the most irritating "Cannot convert from Plugin to Plugin" (I forget the proper syntax).
As a quick workaround I just popped the plugins libraries into the same directory as the exe, so they both reference the exact same Plugin library.

I know this one. In daily work it helps a lot to remove all '*' from the version in the 'AssemblyInfo.cs'.

Hi ,
I have a problem with getting content of a word, excel ,pdf document to be displayed as a report. The path of the file is stored in the database (sql server 2000 in my case) . I want the to get the path and show the contents of the file as a report ...this because i don't want to allow users to modify the contents of the file...can this be done with crystal reports or any other tool?
My application is in VB.Net...
Please help me with any information about this...

No, you cannot. However, I have developer a Viewer control which views any file type that the OS can view. This was mostly done by using a webbrowser control and hooking into different events. Now, it IS possible to handle specific events and get the type of object that is being loaded into the browser. Using this, you could write another layer to your code that can handle the multiple versions of MS Office which could stop a user from modifying a Document. For PDFs it doesn't really matter, only about 5% - 10% of employees actually have a full version of Acrobat where they could actually manipulate a PDF.
I cannot go into futher details because my code belongs to my company and I cannot distribute it. But the webbrowser will be your best bet. In .NET 2005, the webbrowser has been fully overhauled to be .NET friendly.

System.Diagnostics.PerformanceCounter class has access to all performance counters on NT based systems. Supports for CPU and memory usage and a lot more. Check it.

Hello:
I have used Omar Al Zabir's article Implement a Microsoft Word-like Object Model for Your .NET Framework Application[^] as the basis for several applications I have written now, partially because it made for a solid basis for developing Smart Client applications, but also as a means to learn some of the more advanced capabilities contained in the article Developing next generation Smart Clients using .NET 2.0 working with existing .NET 1.1 SOA based XML Web Services[^].
Where does one start when discussing this great framework? Everything about it is elegant, in addition to the fact that it provides a soup-to-nuts complete Enterprise application infrastructure including data access layer using .netTiers templates, a custom enhanced Business Layer facade, secure access to the services in the smart client, elegant implementation of the 'command' and 'mvc' patterns in the smart client, attractive user interface, etc.. That being said, as far as I can tell, the only competitor to this framework is the CompositeUI Application.
My question is this: Have any other developers evaluated both of these architectures, and if so, what reasons have you chosen to use CompositeUI or SmartInstitute?

Personally, I think the Composite UI App Block sucks! I've studied it intensely fro 6 months and MAYBE after about 6 months of studying, you MIGHT be able to put a project together. There is just way to much to grasp.
One of our requirements at my company is to make a Framework that all projects can be built from. I would NEVER base this framework off of the Composite UI! I would be training developers for years! I understand that MS must make App Blocks which work for all cases and all scenarios. However, most of their naming conventions and the way they've put things together could have been done so much better and cleaner!
One thing in particular is developing Plugins. If you use the Composite UI, not only will your Plugin need to know everything about the Host, but you Host also needs to know everything about your Plugin!!!  Decoupled model my a$$!
