The Toshiba Libretto is a currently available alternative to the UMPCs. It weights less than one kilogramm and runs XP at 1280x768. It has a tiny keayboard, FireWire, USB, WLAN, Bluetooth, finger-print sensor, hard disk, etc. And the display has a density of about 200 ppi. Wonderful

When I read that battery life was around 4hrs I was gobsmacked. Even laptops can get over 7hrs of battery life.
Either they are targeting a very specific demographic (while making it sound like everyone will want/need one, when that's clearly not the case) of they just really dropped the ball. I just don't get it.

That's why the 1kg device has an "Add-On" battery pack - an extra couple of kilos to lug around so that you're never without power (I'm just joking, although I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case). Hmmmm... My FMV lasts for 10 hrs when it's got its second battery in it, weighs about 1.3kg, and I'm sure is just as fast (ooh - and the screen folds to face the keyboard - like most laptops - so that the screen doesn't scratch) --- and I bought it two years ago. I suppose with the 1kg (2 pound) "must have with you all the time" device there'll be a need for a carry bag or something so that all the bits don't get damaged.

If the second generation UMPCs look and feel anything like the concepts being touted then maybe.
The current UMPCs though are a bit of a joke. Awful design, OK features.

I hate PDA's(too complicated for some end-users) and i find tablets too much for some purposes.

If PDAs are too complicated to use, then their UI & software needs to be improved. If people won't use PDAs because they're too complicated, then Microsoft's going to have a pretty hard time that they should lug around a mini computer everywhere they go instead!

I do think so the same.Microsoft has a hard road ahead to convince the existing generation of end-users to accept innovative devices and promote a new user interaction.
Maybe they are not so complicated at last, but end-users are used in a kind of interaction pretty much diffirent on desktop pc's and they await to find the same performance and behaviour in a mobile device.Of course this cannot be achieved.
Maybe we should start separating technology innovations to target groups and their needs.I do believe that is impossible for anybody (at least today) to need a UMPC.I don't know in the future.
I think that IBM's president in the early 70's had made a very pessimistic forecast on the infiltration of the pc's to the end-users.He was terribly wrong.
Time changes , needs changes, education curve of users changes but i believe there is a huge portion of the market that is flogged and follows blindly the trends independently of their needs.

If UMPC becomes powerful enough (and has enough outputs) to be used as a multimedia center, then sure, why not?

The tablet PCs, i could see. Big screen, but light, hold it on your arm and draw or read, flip out or plug in a keyboard for light typing...
But this? Too big for a shirt pocket, too small for many documents or detailed drawings...
Perhaps if i spent a *lot* of time on planes or trains, it might be useful for reading emails or something. But i don't, so it won't.

I agree. I've got a tablet PC and it's not bad you can do pretty much everything apart from play games and fits in most bags but any smaller and what's the use? (Apart from emails. Even then I can get them pretty good on my phone.)
