Thanks for the help guys. The links from ProgLoad were great. I re-built the installer last night in just over an hour.
Johnny, the install isn't too complicated. A single EXE in a sub-directory under Program Files with the Help files in a sub-directory under that. The data files are in two directories (Data and Backup) under Documents & Settings. One of my problems was managing the project properties, which aren't where I expected them.

I am trying to learn how to use tools for office using the northwind database.
I am trying to populate NorthWind db data on to an existing word document template
that can be saved then re-used :
I cannot find any tutorial that shows how to perform this. MSDN does not show this

The "eval" command does not exist in VB. I wish to do something that is possible in other languages:

An immediate answer is, "Create an array of objects!". Problem: the "myObject" throws events that I need to handle. If I create an array of "myObject"s, the objects can no longer throw events... even if they did, how would you handle them?

Not true! Create your array of objects, remembering to execute a AddHandler statement to manually wire up the event handlers.

Is there a simple and fast way to tell if a file is locked by another process?
I need to ensure that a zipfile is not locked by another process prior to adding a new file.

Since it is possible for another process to aquire a lock in the time it takes from checking to trying to open the file* yourself I would suggest the better approach is to set up a try/catch mechanism to catch the condition where the file is locked.
Yes, I know it sounds like a tiny amount of time - a few processor instructions - but since Windows is a preemptive multitasking environment there is a strong possibility that the operating system will intervene to give another process its fair share of processor time

I am calling the DynaZip ActiveX control which is returning the ZE_CREAT errormessage (see below). I would think that the ActiveX control would allow you to handle locked files, but I can't find any property that applies. I was attempting to determine if the file was locked prior to calling the control. I may attempt to call this process in a loop until it returns a successful zip message (or another error).

ZE_CREAT = could not create output file - This error can occur when the target ZIP file or the directory to contain the ZIP file is locked or restricted by another.

i have a search textbox and search button on the MainForm (MdiParent). when users clicks on search button it shows the search results from the customer table in ChildForm's dataGridView. but since i only show the same instance of the ChildForm, it only works for the first time. how do i show the new search results without creating new ChildForm instance?

are you using a dataset result and databinding the grid each time you search? Or have you bound the grid at design time?

try clearing the datset on each click event before your databind call.
like
mydataset.clear()
mydataadapter.fill(mydataset)
mydatagrid.datasource = mydataset
mydatagrid.databind()
or you can create a temp table and use a command builder to run updates on that table.

Hi all,
Is it possible to create access users from Vb.net. The company I work for has an application in Access 2003 with a SQL server back end. To log in to the application you have to be a user in SQL server and a user in access with the same password. We are constantly adding new users to the application. I want to create a VB.net application that creates SQL server users and Access users in one place. I was wondering if this is possible. Any ideas or commends or code would be appreciated.

Goran have you tried pulling in the com object for access and playing with that, otherwise if you are just using the jet login I doubt you can add users, I could be wrong.

I have been trying to connect to the mdw file to insert the users but no luck there. Thanks for the idea for the com object but I still would need the VBA code. I will play with it and if I figure out anything ill post the code. Meanwhile if any one can throw any code my way I would appreciate it. Thanks Johny now I have a staring point.

Hi! I want to know how can i open files of any type with appropriate programs in vb.
(Say to open html with internet explorer and frm file with vb etc)
The Shell command in vb is useful in launching only EXEs. But I am not able to open files of other type.
For example my vb code should open "c:\abc\test.txt" with notepad.
Secondly I want to how long my system continues to be in idle state.The screen saver is launched only when system remains idle for a particular time.
And I need to retrieve the idle time of system using my code.How is it possible?

I have a crystal report with 3 parameters, XYZ, Version, Other and I am trying to pass values via VB.Net to this report. It is no problem passing one but any more than that, it does not seem to work. The problem is that it the last parameter holds the value and the others are blank. What am I doing wrong. This is driving me crazy. Here is my code.

Using the Exception Management Application Block I can create new logs in the Event Viewer by placing the following in my app.config file:

Can anyone point me in the right direction to write a ‘cluster aware service’.
I have written a service in VB.NET all works very well but my client said that the service must be cluster aware, as it will be running on a cluster of servers.
