Assuming there's merit in this, I think it would make an excellent article for someone with the know-how.
Let's say you are writing a recipe program that can be used by people in various countries who use differing units of measurement. Converting gallons to liters or fahrenheit to celsius on the fly for displaying a recipe is easy enough that it's probably not worth worrying about performance, but what if someone wants to export a list of 100,000 recipes for someone using other units of measurement? With several ingredients and temperatures in each recipe, that results in a lot of conversions, and performance can become an issue. (The recipe list is just the first example that came to mind... There could be other situations with billions of such conversions.)
I wonder if there is a way to pre-calculate a generic unit of, e.g., weight, which can then be used to extremely quickly find ounces, pounds, grams, troy ounces, grains, etc. without resorting to floating-point division, etc.
I imagine this would fall under the umbrella of NP-complete problems, but since we're only dealing with a limited number of units it seems like it should be possible to find an optimal unit without waiting for a trillion years.  Can this be done or has it been done? Or am I on the wrong track here?

generally, if a software is well released, and is MVC (model-view-Controlers) compliant, then the datas are always stored in the same way, in the same units.
the problem of units is a matter of graphical rendering, so that affects only the UI (user interface)...

Any number of articles on using the multimedia API to 'record' sound would get you started.
Then, if you use PCM, you are getting the raw sound samples - they are not compressed at all.
You can adjust the card's sampling rate (8 KHz, 22KHz, 44 Khz, etc.) for your specific requirements.

Hi all,
I'm looking for a way where invoking a print command from another application actually causes the printing application to send its data to my application or to save it as a file (bitmap, jpg, etc.) so I can access what was printed as an image. Basically, I'd like to print from any application (say I.E.) and have this "printer" be a choice in the print dialog - and after printing, the data generated by the application is handled completely by software.
Are there any articles about this on the web somewhere? (I've tried to find one but no luck)
If there are no articles, what's a good starting point? (Can this be done without DDK or driver development?)
If it requires writing a driver, what am I looking at? Driver? Spooler? I'm kind of lost on the terminology when it comes to this printer stuff.
Am I in the right forum?

Iam working on a project , The objective is to get an Crysltal report (rpt) file as input , display the fields for which graph is possible to the user , The user selects the field and type of graph .
The output is a graph , which can be embedde to the rpt fle and saved
I dont know how to proceed . any idea abt rpt fie format or how to read it

Plug the barcode scanner into a port on your keyboard (most modern keyboards have an input port).
The scanner will send the ASCII code for the barcoded characters and the computer won't know if the data came from the barcode scanner or the user typed it in himself.
There is no magic to it. But the barcode guys (and the programmers) won't tell you this little secret.

and does the reader sends nothings about type like ean-13?

Barcode readers have been made simple to use.
There is a laser in the barcode reader (scanner) that is shined against the barcode. The reflected light is converted back to electrical energy. Now, the reflection is going to show small dark regions (thin bars), large dark regions (thick bars), no dark region (space beteern bars). etc. This information is automatically translated into the exact number the barcode represents.
Barcodes have a specific START symbol at the beginning of the barcode and a specific END symbol where the barcode ends. The reader knows that if you held the barcode upside down (and thus scanned it backwards), it has to reverse the sequence of numbers. So it always sends the correct information to its output port.
ASCII code is the standard by which all characters (numbers, letters, etc.) are represented inside the computer's memory. When you use the keyboard and press "2", the specific ASCII code for the number 2 is sent to the processor. When you use the barcode scanner, it uses the exact same ASCII representation so that the processor does not know if the data came in from a barcode reader or from the keyboard!

Hello there,
Is there any way I can modify a Folder's properties programmatically? As in , I would like to Hide the Properties OPtion(specifically the Read-Only/Archive/Hidden) from the user but be able to modify it via my application. I figured out how to modify it but am having trouble in the hiding Part.
