So I had to kill the entire process because it was not responding. From then on I have not been able to connect to an MDF file. I am able to create new databases on my instance of SQLEXPRESS, my TCPIP and Named Pipes are working, but whenever I try to add an MDF file it times out. In the event viewer I am getting periodic messages about my TCPIP for SQL not being valid, but I don't see how considering I am able to create new databases and the client and the service are configured on the same port. For what its worth, the LOG file does not show SQLSERVER express listening on any ports. But when ever I search for that string through C# SQL command, it’s not finding. Record set containing null data. My C# SQL Command is like this... "SELECT SlNo FROM Noun where Word = '"+textBox1.Text+"'"; Same command is able to search English string from the same column. I hope U understood my problem. Can anybody please help me? You have to use tools like SQL Server Management Studio Express to have any kind of gui similar to Access. MySQL has tools like MySQL Tools which help build databases, queries, etc. If you are looking for something like Access Forms, then you have to program a front-end in VB or C#. It should work fine with that. the 500-1000 figure was given to me by a friend of mine. he may have ben referring to '97 office. I inteend to use 2000. It literally stands for "Structured Query Language" and was originally developed by IBM in the 70's. As of 1987, it was standardized by ANSI and ISO, and has gone through a number of revisions since. Typically a RDBMs will have a command-line interface of some sort (if not a full blown GUI) that accepts SQL commands. You can download one for Sql Express from Microsoft here[^]. That means it is made to handle calls from other programs. OLE = Object Linking and Embedding. A Microsoft technology which allows you to link elements from different applications within each other. The book has been great so far, but when he get's to his first example, he supplies a script file to set up a simple data source. So, i have this .sql file that i don't know what to do with. when I double click it, it just opens in notepad. Yes, i'm a doofus. please help me! In the main pane you can now type SQL. You can execute the SQL by pressing F5 or using the Execute button. Does this help? Install SQL 2K default instance over MSDE 2k default instance nnurani22-Feb-06 4:38 nnurani 22-Feb-06 4:38  The system already has a default instance of MSDE2000 installed. I would liket to upgrade this to a default instance of SQL server 2000. Is this possible without uninstalling the MSDE? The SQL installation asks me for an instance name and disables the default instance (since it already exists in MSDE)??
