When I run the setup.exe in Windows 2000 sp4, there is a dialog which said 'Could not find the main class.Program will exit.'
Then caption of the dialog is 'Java Virtural Machine Laucher'.
Then the program exit.
I tried many computer, some of them is good , and some of them like this.
The OS is Windows 2000 sp4, database is Oracle9i, .net framework is 2.0 beta 2.
Why?

Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me with this (hopefully very simple) problem I am experiencing as a newbie to SQL Server and ASP.NET. I have created a database in SQL Server 2000, and am attempting to show the records from one of the tables in a Visual C# program using Visual Studio.NET 2002.
I am following an online tutorial and have successfully added an SqlConnection in Visual Studio, and can see all relevant tables and columns in my Server Explorer. When I then try to add a SqlDataAdapter to my form, the wizard takes me through the configuration step by step. The final step is to build a query which I have completed successfully (a simple SELECT which I have tested previously using Query Analyser), until I click 'Next' and get the following error message:
Generated SELECT Statement.
Exception from HRESULT: 0x800700C1.
I'm sure there is something simple that I am doing wrong here, as it seems such a straightforward thing to do. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Yes, but I wouldn't recommend using the beta any more. The beta period is over why don't you use the final version?

i installed 2005. The Server Mangaement Studio still connect to version 8.0. SQL server express instance is not running . how can i manually run the instance or please suggest any other alernative.
In 2000 we had service manager, is anything similar in 2005

Use the SQL Server Configuation manager.

The SQL Server Configuration manager is similar, but much expanded as you can do a lot more than jist start and stop services.

It is installed with SQL Server 2005 (version 9.0 as you put it) and will automatically pick up on any SQL Servers on the local machine - At least mine did - you should not have to do any additional work.

You can have multiple SQL Servers running on a physical machine simultaneously. There is no need to "switch" between them.

Hallo,
Most of the utilities won't work with the beta. At least I never got them running on my server. The latest version is ok. No problem with the server management studio.
I run sql server 2000 (msde) and sql server 2005 (express) since half a year already side by side. My only problem was. I could only use osql. Everything else was not working.
Now I again installed side by side on another server using the latest express version. Everything is working with little problems.

I have a small query regarding SQL server 2000. I want to create a database whose mdf and ldf files will reside on a different computer. Now this computer is a Linux Server. My criteria is that, the mdf and ldf files will reside on a Linux server and I should be able to access those files from the SQL server installed on my system. Is this possible? If so, how do I go about doing it?

No. The files used by SQL Server must reside on the same physical machine that the SQL Server service is running on.

If you don't know a username and password with enough rights to stop the database, let alone connect to it, your question is pointless. There is nothing that will tell you what any username or password is. You'll have to get this from the database administrators.

I'm using a smart device which run Win CE witn SQL CE 2.0. Would like to know what is the best way to export a table in the device with 50,000 records to a text file.
Should i use a SQL SELECT statement like "SELECT * FROM TABLE" into a data set and later loop the DataTable in the DataSet and export write it to a text file ?
Or select in it into a DataReader and loop the DataReader? Which one will provide a better performance ?
I try to to use method 1 (loop the DataTable in DataSet, but the proble is it take a long time to select all the record into the dataset, and it look like hang over there to the user  , because i can't update the status and show to the user.
However method 2 (loop DataReader) seen like bit better at least i was able to update the status to the user and let user know the program is running.
Please kindly advise. Thank in advance.

If you use a DataAdapter to fill a DataSet then the entire contents are read with a DataReader (that is how a DataAdapter gets the information from the database) and the DataTable is populated with the data, you have to wait for this operation to complete before you can access even one row. Then you can write it to your file.
With a DataReader you can write the rows directly to the file as you get them. You do not have to wait for a DataTable object to be filled and you do not waste that memory either.
As you have discovered already that the user is left hanging around for a long time while the DataSet is filled, while the DataReader allows you to give feedback on progress immediately.

Hi All,
In my project database is SQL server.
The LDF file size is increasing considerably(now it is 16 gb).
It may be due to unCommited transactions.
My question is that if I close the connection after each query execution will it commit the transaction so that the file size will be small.?
or is there any other solution to decrease the file size?

In general terms, no, you have to commit the transaction yourself, provided you actually started one. If you start a transaction and don't explicitly commit it, then, upon disconnection from the database, it assumes the transaction is not complete and any changes within that transaction are rolled back.
You might find this[^] MS KB article useful in helping you determine where the problem is.

OK. This has been bugging me for a little while.
I assumed you where doing the basics:
Are you backing up the database regularly?
Are you backing up the Transaction Log, and truncating the log to remove old, unneeded transactions?
If not, you might want to go into the Enterprise Manager and setup a Maintenance Plan....

Yes I am backing up the database daily.
I am taking the backup of complete database not just a ldf or MDF file.
But I don't know how to truncate the log to remove old,unneeded transactions.
How this can be done?

Well, you can read the docs on the BACKUP sql statement here[^].
If you're doing a Full backup of the database, and the log doesn't get truncated already, you can follow it up with the SQL statement
BACKUP LOG databaseName TRUNCATE_ONLY
to dump the old transactions in the log that are no longer required to rebuild the database.
What you're trying to maintain is a backup of the data, which you're doing daily, and a backup of the transactions in the log since the backup of the data was last done.
