You should not be redistributing DLLs from your Windows XP system directory. Windows 2000's Windows File Protection should actually be kicking in when you attempt to do this. Instead, you should use the Merge Modules that match your Visual Studio service pack version. Download for SP5[^], download for SP6[^]. Note that there are known issues[^] in these merge modules.
You need to be very careful about which file versions you copy to which operating systems, and how you get them there. The merge modules include (mostly) correct instructions for which files to install on which systems. If you're not using Windows Installer you may want to look for redistributable package installers which you can run from within your own installer. Getting it wrong can screw up your customer's whole system ('DLL Hell').
I would strongly recommend avoiding the Visual Basic 'Package and Deployment Wizard' (which I refer to as the 'Package and Destroy Wizard'). This tool regularly picks up DLLs from the Windows system directory rather than the Redist directory it's supposed to (default location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\VB98\Wizards\PDWizard\Redist) and also picks up many components that should not be redistributed. It can be used safely but is very hard to do so.
These days I generally use Visual Studio .NET 2003's setup projects to distribute applications, using the merge modules for distributing components I depend on, modified as instructed by the InstallSite page I linked to earlier.

Hi All
I am taking backup of Registry keys by using regedit command and, ShellExecute( ) is used to run this command from MFC based application, the code that I am using is as follows

ShellExecute(0,"open","RegEdit.exe","/e D:\\write1.reg HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT",NULL,SW_SHOW);<br />
"Suppose that I have to take the backup of following key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT
But this is not saved at desired path,
Caz, as I think there is a space in Windows NT .
So please suggest me that how shoul I remove this problem.
one more thing registry keys with no space in name is saved successfully.
Pls help me.

You may use the standard registry operation functions to open and read data.
I am not sure if these are correct, I do not have MSDN installed on this machine, but I have worked a lot on dealing with windows Registry. I believe the following are the functions.

RegOpenKeyEx<br />
RegQueryValyeEx<br />
RegSetValueEx<br />
I would suggest you open the key, read value, and write it into a text file in BINARY MODE.

Only difference is that I've wrapped the registry key in quotes, if you dont RegEdit will try and treat the key name as part of the export filename

useful,Iam able to understand the concept easily upto step 6 , when i tried
your sample in a stand alone machine both client and server application
works properly,But at the same time when im trying it from a remote machine
it is not working can you please help me with your reply im getting a error
like this "unable to access rpc IHelloWorld " i followed all the steps what
you have said to follow.wait for your reply

Is there a difference between using the WinInet function HttpSendRequest() asychronously and calling the function on a new thread?
I'm currently using HttpSendRequest() on a separate thread but it still seems to be blocking the winsock 'keepalives' that are sent between our client program and server programs.

The String class in .NET, used by most of the controls returns Unicode strings.
I want to do some IO operations using the FILE* type. But fopen() accept only
char* arguments for the file name. Is there a way to solve this problem because
byte conversion can cause data loss?

I am working on an applicaiton that needs to support different databases. I created the reports using SQL Server as the database, and for others i am setting the databse information and table locations from the code.
Now in some of the reports i have got subreports, having parameters mapping to the fields in the main report. Since the parameter is defined with an '@Parameter' in sql server and ad 'Parameter (no @)' in oracle for stored procedures I had to change the name of the parameters from code too. This is working ok.
Now the problem is that I had to modify the links accroding to the new parameter field names. but the problem is that i am unable to retrieve the mapping field names of the subreport. There is a call available as
ISubreportLinkPtr->MainReportField->GetName
ISubreportLinkPtr->SubreportField->GetName
The main report one return the correct name of the field in the main report but the subreport one always returns the first database field instead of the actual mapping field.
Anyone got any idea please reply quick.

Hello, after looking at this thread[^], I tried also to deploy my application on a remote computer (without VC2005 installed). The app was created with VC2005 Express edition. So, I read the several articles on app deployement on Microsoft website, and I could not believe it !! It seems impossible to use an app developped with the express edition on another computer   !
None of the methods described there works because the files don't exists with the express edition:
1) Deploy using a Setup and Deployment Project: not possible because this type of project doesn't exist in the Express edition:
From the File menu, click New Project, open the Other Project Types node and select Setup and Deployment, then click Setup Project.
Supply a name and click OK.
2) Deploy using XCopy (method1: Deploying Visual C++ library DLLs as shared assemblies): the required files don't exist (and even the vcredist_x86 folder is not present)
Copy vcredist_x86.exe from %PROGDIR%\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\SDK\v2.0\Bootstrapper\Packages\vcredist_x86\vcredist_x86.exe
to the target computer
3) Deploy using XCopy (method2: Deploying Visual C++ library DLLs as private assemblies): the required files don't exist neither (neither the redist folder)
On the development computer, from %PROGDIR%\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\VC\Redist\x86, copy Microsoft.VC80.CRT and
Microsoft.VC80.CRT to \bin and to \bin\MyLibrary.
SO WHAT ???? 
With the Express edition, all you can do is is develop your little application on your computer and that's it !! Not possible to redistribute it  . And in November 2006 they want to make people pay for this crap ???
I can't believe it

Hello,
I have a MFC aplication with a dialog. In the same file where that dialog's methods are defined (dialog.cpp), i have defined some functions that don't belong to the dialog nor any other class. Some of those funcions need to access to the control's (some progress bar and a label) methods of that dialog.
Is that possible?. I've tried to define a global pointer to the dialog in the dialog.cpp file, and asign it to the dialog in the constructor method (pointer=this). Then i should access to the controls from the functions by using: pointer->GetDlgItem(ID)->SetWhatever(); , but i can't.
Could you help me?

Accessing controls from outside a dialog is in general a bad design practice. Also, try to avoid global variables and global functions (it's lead in general to a lot of troubles).
Your problem could probably solved in another way than using global funcions. Why do you want to use such behavior in a global function ? What do you need to do exactly ? If you describe in details what you are trying to achieve, we could probably help you by pointing you better ways of doing it...

Thank you. I know that using global functions is not a good design practice, but due to external reasons i have to use at least one, and that one needs to update some controls very frequently (25 times/sec).
The process is this:
launch aplication
|__launch dialog
|__launch DirectShow graph
|__uses filter that takes a function (not method) as parameter
|____function accesses dialog controls 25 times per second to update some progress bars and labels

Perhaps, but why would you want to? It sounds like a recipe for disaster. Why not just send the dialog a standard Windows message and let the dialog itself communicate with its controls? If you absolutely had to communicate with the controls, use SendDlgItemMessage().
