I did this, you create a virtual machine for non windows OS, jsut remember that you cannot have shared drives with the main PC.
Oh, for some reason I had to leave CDs in the drive for about 10-15 seconds after reading before RedHat could see them

Hi:
I am using VirtualPC in my system and need to test Windows Server also. But I am afraid to have Windows Server since my friend told me about heavy space consumption.
And also how to go about setting up. Since the base system is running Windows 2000 Professional, would it mix up any of the system files?

All disk accesses within the Virtual PC environment go to the emulated hard disk, so there is no chance of overwriting your system files (assuming of course that there are no problems with Virtual PC itself, but I've not noticed any).
The most common setup is to have Virtual PC emulate a primary master IDE hard disk using a file on your system somewhere. The 'New Virtual Machine Wizard' in Virtual PC 2004 prompts you to either 'Create a virtual machine' or 'Use default settings to create a virtual machine'.
If you select default settings, you get a virtual machine configured to use 128MB of RAM, no hard drives, the emulated CD-ROM drive attached to the secondary IDE controller, and virtual networking enabled, attached to your primary network card. Use the Virtual Disk Wizard to configure a virtual hard drive.
If you select Create a virtual machine, after a few steps asking you to select the OS and the amount of RAM, it will ask whether to use a new or existing virtual hard disk. If you select New, it will ask where to create the disk. It will create a 'dynamically expanding virtual hard disk'. From inside the virtual machine, this looks like a 16GB hard disk. From outside, it's a file which only uses as much space as has actually been written to from inside. A Windows Server 2003 virtual disk I have, which has only had the OS installed on it so far, takes 1.5GB of actual space.
Using the Virtual Disk Wizard, you can select three other types of disk: fixed size, differencing, and linked to a physical hard disk. A fixed size disk has the same size inside and outside the virtual machine - there is a one-to-one correspondence between the sectors of the emulated disk and sectors of the physical file. A differencing disk is one which is based on another virtual disk image - it only stores the differences between this disk and another. This can be useful for adding new software to a base image - you could have one basic Windows Server 2003 image and derive two or more new images from that.
Finally, if you're a computer administrator, you can use an actual physical hard drive as the virtual disk. This is the fastest but most risky option. The whole disk is accessible to Virtual PC and the guest operating system.
To install a guest OS, put the CD in your CD drive, select the virtual machine you'll be using, and choose Start from the Virtual PC Console, or from the Virtual PC tray icon's context menu. If the installer does not start up within the virtual machine, and the OS you're trying to install supports booting from CD, right-click the CD image in the status bar and choose 'Use Physical Drive n:', where n is the drive you put the CD into. Then select Action/Reset from the menu. You can also boot from an ISO image of a CD - from the CD menu, select Capture ISO Image rather than Use Physical Drive.

I would like to have a listing in a text file of all the files in a directory, including all sub-directories.
I have been using:-
dir c:\myDir /s >> myfiles.txt
But are they any way you can get a tree type structure written to this file.

Hey Guys!!!!! I'm Plannin 2 buy an apple powerbook & as that Comes with a mac o/s I wanted 2 know if there are any compatibility issued I have 2 be aware of as I have Windows xp on My Desktop.

Should be pretty painless. I put my fiance's mother through it last Christmas and she did exceptionally well, as did my roommate the year before. Just remember that your Windows programs won't run on it, you will need to get Mac versions. Your documents/pictures/music etc. should move over seemlessly. One caveat on music, you will need Windows Media Player for OS X if you have music/video encoded in Windows Media formats.
Also, remember that it is a bit of a learning process. Most people have the biggest problem because they try to do things the XP way on a Mac. Remember that the Mac will be more intuitive so you'll find yourself not having to jump through hoops anymore, which is a bit of a shock to new Mac users.
Oh, and enjoy the switch, everyone who I know that's done it is much happier and actually now use their computers for useful things other than just trying to keep them virus-free.

I am trying to automate norton ghost on several computers. The problem is that some of these computers do not have floppy drives. I am working with norton 7.5 and Easy cd creator 5 platnium on windows XP and 2000. From what I have read the CD has to be windows 98 format for norton ghost to boot properly. So my question is, how do I make a bootable CD for norton ghost that does not use a floppy?

i made this, but i did not end to automate it 'till the end.
however, you can do the following.
you first create a bootable floppy with a window 98 (if you don't have any, ask to a friend to create a boot floppy for you).
then, i don't know how easy CD Creator makes a bootable CD (i don't even know if it allows you to do such a thing) ; i made mine with nero.
I don't remember exactly the whole process to obtain it, but it is described in its help file.
search for creating a bootable CD, then, it will ask the boot source. give it the floppy, and add the files you like on your CD Burning session (i personally added the dos exe of ghost on my CD plus several files of mine).
then, here you are, your new bootable CD is ready to run.
boot your PC with it, then search for the ghost exe, run it...
you've got it !

I've tried making a bootable CD based off my Norton ghost boot disk with no success. I tried using Easy CD Creator 5, and trial version of Nero 6 Reloaded. For Nero i followed the instructions in the help manual for making a bootable CD. Everytime I boot off a CD, a few garbage characters are printed to the screen. If i press a key the same garbage characters are printed again.
Two of the boot CDs i made said "Cannot boot from CD code 4" and then immedaitely booted my OS. I can not remeber exactly what i did to get that. I have burned liek 10 CDs by now i am starting to forget what did what.
I downloaded the iso of ultimate bootdisk, burned to a CD as an image and that booted successfully to DOS, so i know my labtop supports bootable CDs.
Btw i am working with a IBM A31p labtop running Windows XP Pro. I want to boot Norton Ghost in DOS without the use of a floppy, b/c i do not have a floppy drive. A friend of mine has the same labtop but with a floppy disc drive so i use his to create the CDs.
Any suggestions would be very helpful

so use your friend computer to then create your boot CD... after that, you won't need floopy anymore to boot to DOS...

I do not know what i am doing wrong but I can not create a bootable CD. I tried it with Nero and Easy CD Creator. Using various guides online. Can anyone give me a link to a guide that you have tested for Windows XP? Thanks

Does anybody know "what is the maximum nested folders depth in windows".
I've observed that it just not only counts the no of nested folders in a hierarchy, but it also count folders names to limit the depth.
For example, I've tested it by creating deep folder hierarchy, exceeding the count of 244 words like the following.

Actually, I needed a deep folder hierarchy and to test the limit, I replaced it by number for checking. You can see that it equals to 244 count, and when it reaches this limit, it doesn't allow to make any more nested folder.
CAN ANYBODY GIVE A SOLUTION FOR CONTROLLING / EXCEEDING THE LIMIT OF NESTED FOLDERS IN END USER'S HAND.
I've tested it both with Windows 2000 and XP.

I don't think there is a maximum depth of nested folders.
The maximum length you can have for a path is 260 characters, unless you use a special syntax with the Unicode version of, for example, CreateFile. Explorer cannot display a path longer than 260 characters and will not allow you to navigate deeper than that.

Using the ANSI APIs, the total path length is limited to MAX_PATH (260). Using the Unicode APIs, the path length limit is 32767 characters and each component of the path is limited to MAX_PATH characters.

I am working on several programs that require ordinary users to be able to adjust settings that are shared by all users. In particular, if a user plugs in a new video camera to the frame grabber board, the camera won't suddenly revert to the old one when a new user logs in. What are some approved ways to do it?

if one creates a subdirectory of All Users/Application Data, it's OK to make that folder world writeable and store shared files there. I found this in the specs for the "Designed For Windows XP" logo, which required a lot of links to reach and quite a bit of reading once I had it.

I have a W2k Advanced Server, (Cluster Service).
On that I have to crate a resource type "Network Name" using Widows/VB Script.
Now the problem is I could not able to add the Virtual server name in the parameters section. As the Virtual Name is missing I could not bring the resource on-line.
Any suggesstions, Thanks in advance

There are two point that you should consider:
1. Configure the Mandatory profile.[^]
2. Use group policies to apply setting for Remove windows explorer default context menu and Remove the property from the My Documents context menu.
