i am actually developing for windows ce (.net 4.2) devices,
not for windows mobile / embedded devices.
my questions should be placed correctly,
because there is no specific message board for windows ce development
and this message boards' description says it should be used for
mobile, embedded and ce development?!

Yes indeed, this forum, I believe is also for Windows Mobile (the new name for Pocket PC/WinCE)be it version wce420 or previous version.
While researching to start this product I was also spending quite a lot of my time trying to make the functions you mentioned above worked, IMHO it is not supported, after many tries, I gave up.

I have a question. I've been throwing out ideas to write a program, but I'm having a slight problem trying to figure something out on my Motorola MPx220. There are 3 audio outputs (I don't know if they are different audio devices though): earphone, headphone, and speakerphone. There are also 3 audio inputs: earphone, headphone, and speakerphone. These have been gathered as physical input/outputs, but is it possible to have a 4th for each based on a call? For example, if I called waveInOpen and passed it some device ID, would it be possible to record what I hear in the earpiece and what the phone hears through the microphone during a call? I know people have developed applications to do it with previous versions of Windows Mobile, but is it possible to do it in 2003 2nd Edition? If so, how would I go about figuring out which device is the valid device(s) to record from?

When I try to use the API function GetFileVersionInfoSize() to retrieve the
size of the version resource in my PocketPC app the size returned is always
zero. When I get the error value with GetLastError() the error value is:
Error 1814: The specified resource name cannot be found in the image file.
I am passing the name of my executable file to GetFileVersionInfoSize() as
follows:
The path to the executable is: My Device\debug\myappce.exe
size = GetFileVersionInfoSize(_T("myappce.exe",&dummy);
I have also tried:
size = GetFileVersionInfoSize(_T("\\\\debug\\myappce.exe",&dummy);
Is there something I am doing wrong ... are GetFileVersionInfoSize and the
rest of the version API functions supported on PocketPC (winCE 4.2) ?

Try this

FileSize = GetModuleFileName(NULL, FileName + 1, MAX_PATH+3);
InfoSize = GetFileVersionInfoSize(FileName, &FileSize);
The result?

In the previous post I was trying to link to .lib files, that I suspect it can't be done. However now I want to link with .NET Assemblies. I 've created my assembly through VS .NET 2003 as a "Class Library (.NET)" project and compiled it. How can I use it now from my C# .NET application for PocketPC?

I want to use some third party code for PocketPC. However they distribute the code in .lib and I need to implement it in C# .NET. Is there any way I can link to these files or I can only link to .dll libraries?

I'm surprised that they've shipped a static library. It should be fairly straightfoward to build a DLL that exports routines that wrap the static library.
In fact it might just be possible to write a .DEF file containing the routines to export and run the .lib and .def through the linker. It's pretty nasty though, so I'd normally go with the first route.

I have such problem:
I have ListView and ContextMenu for this ListView. I want to make so, that when user taps and hold stylus on ListView, item in ListView selected before showing ContextMenu.
Does anybody know, which event comes before ContextMenu.Popup and how to solve my problem? Please help!!!

In MFC, use Default() in the OnLButtonDown do the trick. Try read the MFC codes it might give you some clues.

I am looking for a book to get started on Pocket PC development using c++
I have used MFC (MSVC6) for quite some time and am beginning to use ATL/WTL. I need to build a Pocket PC companion app to a desktop app we have and am looking for a good book to get me started.
I would also welcome any suggestions on the development environment - I subscribe to MSDN and thus have access to what MS offers. I am thinking starting by supporting Pocket PC 2002 devices and I understand that means the 3.0 version of the development environment.

If you are looking for Pocket PC books on MFC/ATL/WTL, chances are that you are not going to find them.
This book is good: Programming Windows CE.Net (3rd Edition). The title is a little bit misleading, it is essentially a book on Win32 for Pocket PC.
If you know MFC well then why don't you just dive in and come back to CodeProject later when you have problem.

I have come to the same conclusion.
I am thinking not using MFC, and was looking for some examples about databases and synchroning between Mobile and Desktop.
I will take a look at the the book I suggested - I was avoiding books that said .Net as I use Visual Studio 6.

Hello everyone,
I found an articles in msdn which is "Receiving SMS Messages Inside a Managed Application". I download the sample code and run it.This project contains two separte projects "mapirule" and "CaptureSMS". Mapirule was implemented by using embedded Visual C++ 4.0 and CaptureSMS contains managed code only which was implemented by using Visual Studio.NET 2003
When I built mapirule.dll in embedded C++4.0, the error "download file failed" occurred. When I tested the sample code on an emulator and clicked Start IMailRuleClient". Error message "The function is not defined" ("registerServer function). This function is defined in mapirule. How come mapirull.dll can't be loaded? Is there anyone who can give me any suggestion.It's urgent. Thank you veryyyy much.

It may be the platform problem. The target(i.e., PDA) may be running with PPC 2002 or some mismatch might be there.
Once u find ur application compiled successfully, and if the IDE is not registering the dll on PDA, go ahead and copy the dll manually by exploring the PDA dir. Copy it windows dir. of PDA.

I'm developing PocketPC application with Visual Studio.NET 2003, where I show the data from server in Datagrid on PPC. It looks nice if I use default font, but it is too big. So I've reduced the font size to 6, and now it looks very blocky, with jagged edges. I tried many different fonts and sizes (Tahoma, Arial, Times New Roman...), but they are all blocky at small sizes. They look normal in Listbox though, and in all other applications I have on PPC. Am I doing something wrong? I set the font via "Font" property of Datagrid, the PPC I'm using is Dell Axim X50v and I have ClearType enabled.

I would like to develop a a full screen application in Pocket PC. The meaning of "full screen" is the app. will cover the whole physical screen including "Start" button of Windows in PPC.
Sorry, i 'm new to PPC programming. I saw a PPC application in market. Once the PPC is switch on, it will open the app. directly with full screen. Then the user are not able go to windows but only the program itself. The 4 shortcut button is dedicated for the functions of the application.
Thus, the users are no chance to access windows setting, other programs and so on.
they called it as KIOSK mode...is there any sample code inteads of buying "Spb Kiosk Engine".
I tried to search in google but most of the website introduce "Spb Kiosk Engine".
Any API or Library for VB.net for KIOSK? or any sample code?
