hello i have 2 classes one class has a function that takes the second class as a ref argument however i want to call this function from within the second class but the compiler will not let me using, this, is there any way around doing without making the function take a non ref argument?

You can't pass 'this' a ref argument because it is a value, not a variable. This will satisfy the compiler

hrmm that doesnt quite do it i guess my question if to parts
i have 2 classes
class obj1
{
public static MyFunc(ref obj2 o)
{
do some stuff
}
}
class obj2
{
public MyFunc()

obj1.MyFunc(/*ref*/ this); // this doesnt work
}
}
the second part is if im not using a ref what kinda memory problems will this cuase if any i dont really want to duplicate obj2 i want to use the same one continuasly ?

Does anyone know of any free tools which I can use to evaluate the performance of certain functions of an application? I have used DevPartner however the application crashes 90% of the time when using that!

I use the DevPartner coummnity edition regulary and i have never had it crash - and I do some pretty extreme profiling runs - some of them taking over 24 hours

I have just added help to my C# application, and it invokes the Help window when F1 is pressed just as it should. However, I find that the help window itself disappears or is covered by my app (the app is always maximized) whenever the app loses focus. For reasons I won't go into at the moment, my app creates additional windows that it arranges for itself, but I don't know if this has any bearing on the matter. All I can say for sure is that if my app loses the focus, the Help window disappears. It comes back if I click on the title bar of my app to get focus back, but if I click on the title bar of the Help window, my app loses focus, and the help window goes away again!
Does anyone know of a setting I may have made in my app that would cause this behavior?

Just try this code and tell me , whether it served your purpose or not.

You can achive it throught some third party help creator tool Or you can use Microsoft Help Workshop. This you will get through .NET installation.;)

I am looking for a sample of code in C# using as a web service which would do the following:
1. Accept a XML stream
2. Parse the XML, prep for inserting into a database table
3. Set a Session ID
4. Return the Session ID to the Requester.
If someone could show me how this is done, I would be most appreciative.

Hi friends
i am using finisar sqlite dll to interact with sqlite db,i am often getting the following Exception Message
"Unable to load dll(sqlite)" though dll is present and I event verified by calling calling
mycon.GetType().AssemblyQualifiedName.ToString()
and its indicating right path of loaded Dll
can anyone tell me why the mentioned exception is being thrown?

Sure, the sqlite.dll that you're P/Invoking into couldn't be loaded. The message is not refering to your assembly, but the dll that your assembly is trying to call into. You probably need to put the sqlite.dll into you bin\debug or bin\release directory.

Would you know how I may add controls that aligns itself to the right of the menu bar (MenuStrip) in whidbey.
Office 2003 has a similar feature. On the menu bar of Word 2003 there is a "type a question for help" combobox which is aligned to the right. I need to mimic this behavior.

When the form is resized, the right aligned ToolStripItems are layed over the menu items. Is there any way to change that behavior?
Say like, truncating them or automatically making it go into a drop down button list. Or programmaticaly can we identify the sizes and locations to make them invisible?

Ok, i got a program, and when you start it you get the option to either, enable / disable the password, but thats all. Theres no actual file to protect, now i could put the file into the program BEFORE compiling it, but then how would you get a new file in there?
So is there a way i can run the program, then add a file to it.
The main idea is to protect a file with a password so that when you click on the file it asks for a password, you enter the password and then the file is back to normal.

First, it's already been done - it's called a WinZip Self Extracting Executable.
In order to use the files, you actually have to unpack them first. Once that is done, you don't need any password to use them, so what's the point?
The method that you describe only protects the files during transport from machine to machine. It can't do anything about the files once they're unpacked. Also, unless the files are encrypted in the self-extractor package, it's not that hard to pull the files out of the package without the password.
Also, the files are not compiled into the .EXE as you put it. Rather, the file package (or .ZIP in our example), encrypted or not, is appended to the end of the .EXE file. The .EXE has to know how far into the file to start looking for the .file package, then it's a simple process of processing the files from there.
The file format could look something like this:

I am currently making a user control that contains a collection of my custom control witch overides OnPaint method. I use:
My custom control constructor inits those style:
SetStyle(System.Windows.Forms.ControlStyles.DoubleBuffer, true);
SetStyle(System.Windows.Forms.ControlStyles.AllPaintingInWmPaint, true);
SetStyle(System.Windows.Forms.ControlStyles.ResizeRedraw, true);
SetStyle(System.Windows.Forms.ControlStyles.UserPaint, true);
UpdateStyles();
Now, my user control constructor add a collection of my custom control
to its Controls Collection and also sets ControlStyles like my custom control does.
My user control overrides OnLayout to place the collection of custom control as a special way. I SuspendLayout at the Begining of OnLayout and ResumeLayout at the end. So my problem is that my user control OnPaint event is not called so DoubleBuffering is not working on user control.
Is it because I use double buffering in my custom control or is just
a desing problem? If someone could help me with that, I will apreciate a lot. And I am sorry for my english, if its'no clear just please tell me.

hey everyone,
I have been trying to link a schema to an xml file programatically inside my application, so that references inside the xml will expand when added to a treeview but i cannot get it to work. I know how to link a schema inside the xml file itself, noNameSpaceSchemaLocation and schemaLocation. However try as i might (and i am trying  )i cannot get them to link programatically, or even know if it can be done. I am not looking for help on validation, as i know how this works using XmlValidatingReader etc.

This message goes out to all the regular expression gurus out there:
I have a very simple regular expression declaration:
regex.Regex ex = new System.Text.RegularExpressions.Regex("\\(");
I want to know how to test against this regular expression so that if the tested string does not match EXACTLY then its going to give me false. For example:-
string test = "a(";
regex.Regex ex = new System.Text.RegularExpressions.Regex("\\(");
System.Console.WriteLine(ex.IsMatch(test, 0));
should return false (which it does not). How do I do this?
Secondly, I want to recursively define a definition but I do non know exactly how. I have an expression and it COULD be enclosed in brackets. So lets say I have the following:
E -> (E)
I could alse have:
E -> C-E
C -> constant
How do I write a definition like this? I'm very much not keen on writing a parser, I assure you!

I'm not familiar with the .net regex syntax, just the Perl syntax, but in Perl you can write ^\($ where ^ means "beginning of the string" and $ means "end of the string". Hopefully there are equivalents in .net that you can use.
