Since I am kinda over the eclipse by now, I have a question or two for the esteemed experts frequenting this forum.
Imagine this purely hypothetical scenario: You have taken the SIM card out of your phone and placed it within the reach of your dog. You turn around to grab the TV remote control and when you turn your attention back to your phone, you cannot seem to locate the SIM card. You search for it in the general vicinity and on the floor while trying not to look at your dog. For the heck of it, let's say you cannot get to the AT&T store for a couple of days.
Question: Do you follow your dog around with a bag and various cleaning/disinfecting articles handy? Or is that a waste (  ) of time because the SIM card will get dissolved before it...comes out?

I say it survives (and this is based upon purely empirical non-science evidence). 
My dog has toys and ropes and all kinds of things and any time he eats those bits and pieces they pass cleanly through his system, as seen the next day, out in the yard when the red and blue rope strings come out. 'nuff said. 
Please follow him and let us know the __outcome__.

If you don't want to follow him the whole day you can always give him something to accelerate the process and have him in a closed area (but be sure it is good ventilated )

Indeed. Schools are letting out an hour later because they were worried about the kids and buses being on the road when it goes dark. News releases said to make sure if you are driving during it to put your headlights on. I was at 97% apparently and you didn't even need to turn on your lights. Very disappointing. But, I guess that goes to show how powerful the sun is if there is such a huge difference between 97% and 100%.
I also just spoke to my brother who lives in Idaho directly in the path and he said it was amazing. He loved it.

The effect would probably have been stronger without diffuse light in the atmosphere. On the moon there is only deep shadow or bright sunlight, nothing inbetween.

Difference between < 99% and 100% is enormous! Seeing <99 is slightly better than seeing full moon. Seeing 100% is almost spiritual event!

Yes - we jump up-and-down for one day each fourth year after 28th Feb and before 1st March. We didn't bother in 1900 and we will not do it in 2100 either.

We live 60 miles or so from Columbia, SC - one of the 100% zones.
Showed my daughter the pictures; she says they saw the small sliver of sunlight.
Not total, but still interesting.

I drove to southern Illinois to watch the total eclipse. Really without glasses there wasn't much noticeable difference until the blockage was hitting the 100% mark. Even a minute or two before hand it was almost full brightness glancing up at the sun without my glasses on. Sure the horizon wasn't quite the same shade of blue, but no real change in ambient light levels.
During those two minutes of darkness though, WOW!  I got chills from both the sheer beauty of it and the temperature drop.
