Has anyone else experienced this? My IIS 10 server has been functioning fine for several months. Today I get
[HttpException (0x80004005): Could not load type '%Windir%\System32\inetsrv\compdyn.dll'.]
on every single page that uses ASP.Net.
My only guess is that an automatic Win 10 update has changed something but what?
Bah!!!
I may not last forever but the mess I leave behind certainly will.

You should check, in your Server Manager, that the service's role for IIS : Dynamic Compression, is installed.
You always obtain more by being rather polite and armed than polite only.

I've not seen that one, but I don't use dynamic compression locally.
Turning off dynamic compression should get you back up and working for now. You might need to uninstall/reinstall the feature to get it working again.

Manged to recover by rolling back to an earlier restore point. Still no idea what caused it though.

An update for anyone who is interested.
I managed to replicate this issue by turning on dynamic compression. It worked fine until the machine was rebooted and then the same symptoms were presented.
Turning dynamic compression off didn't help and uninstalling it didn't do any good. Once again I had to restore to an earlier point.
Now I have no idea if dynamic compression was somehow turned on to cause this. I never use it and as far as I was aware it had not been installed.
Looking at the config history only showed static compression enabled and dynamic compression disabled.
Similarly no clues in the event viewer logs. No IIS logging was enabled. My bad.
I suspect this may have been a permissions issue. The offending dll having been locked for some reason.
Meanwhile, it aint broke and I'm not going to fix it until it is.

Stuff like this makes me glad that I can see retirement on the not too distant horizon.
Let's see...
1. Replace people with robots to manufacture goods for consumers.
2. Consumer loses job to robot.
3. Consumer has no money to purchase goods.
4. Robot no longer needed to manufacture goods.
Seems flawed to me.

It's Accountant Logic: "I save $5 per unit! We'll be cheaper than the competition!"
It's the same logic that outsourced everything to India, China, and other places where the cost of employing people is a lot lower, and to heck with the effects on the community and market as a whole. Then they wonder why the local market dries up ... and blame the competition for doing the same thing.

Certainly the consumer masses are to blame for demanding the cheapest goods regardless of where they're manufactured. If we as consumers cared enough to pay more for domestic products the jobs would stay here...wait a minute, I forgot to factor in corporate greed! Nevermind, we're all doomed!

Maybe these facilities can come back to America and Europe so we can take advantage of the jobs they do create. If not for massive amounts of cheap labor manufacturing in China doesn't offer much.

If a company's customer base is made up of its own staff then it's already in deep doo-doo. It makes perfect sense for a company with a large, diverse customer base, especially if it's international. The only flaw would be if literally every employer in the world was to do the same but we are a long way from that.

Yes, but step 3 won't happen. For a while it will look like it's happening, but ultimately it's not sustainable, as you've concluded.
Which is why it's won't happen. Humans are not just passive actors reacting to economic stimuli, we can take intentional actions. We can see it coming, so we're going to do something about it.
Not by rabidly creating jobs out of thin air, I hope. This is currently the "solution", everyone wants to "create jobs", which works for now, but there's no point in creating jobs that are fundamentally useless because a robot could do them. Then you might as well get a robot to do it and pay the human for sitting on his ass.
So, that is exactly what will happen eventually, after stretching the creation of nearly-pointless jobs to the max. We will pay humans to sit on their ass. They can go do something more interesting too I suppose, doesn't make any difference.
This isn't a surprise, we're already doing it with people who have nothing to offer society, there will just be more of them. It's not communism, there's still an incentive to work. But you wouldn't have to, and there would be plenty of people for who there just is no job, who just have nothing they can do that couldn't be automated.
(inb4 "lol, skipped econ101", I didn't make this up)

That being the cause, it's quite understandable that I doubt it was an accident - and something more "Bill Cosby-ish" in nature.
Oh - one more thing - reading the text of the article makes me think that the threshold for calling something a 'rampage' seems to be quite tame in some parts of the world.
