So, since the in-laws moved in up the street (5 houses), every year we have to go to their place for the Christmas Eve dinner, white elephant gift exchange, and mother in law inducing bout of raging intestinal cramps. I **** you not.
I have found that a healthy dose of gin helps make the evening pass....
Well, today is Christmas Eve. The past 3 days, I have driven 1500 miles to visit my Army son, wife and grandson, and damnit, I'm going to drink a little, shower when I want too, and play my online game. At 1830 hours, I have to submit myself to 4 hours of torture, listening to my mother in law prattle on about this that and the other. Next year, I'm in Aruba.
Nevertheless, the funny part of this story is my wife coming to me and expressing her concerns. I quote, "Honey, I want to say this as lovingly as possible, but if you have to get sh*t faced to go to the dinner tonight, maybe you ought not to go."
I happen to be out of rum, which I will correct shortly. But I busted out laughing. Of course, I admit it - much to the discredit of my character, I would much rather get ****-faced and watch an old movie than go through this horror. There is no right answer here. If I say, okay, I'll stay home, it's just going to end badly. If I go, well, I guess we all have to take one for the team.

What I find troubling is that your wife would rather you not go, then put her mother in check.
I lived through the whole MIL hell, already; it almost ruined my marriage. Luckily in the end, my wife chose me over her mother. Does yours?

lol... point taken. As in all things, we add up the plusses and minuses. The kids seem to enjoy it, so I try not to be an arse about the situation. I just ran out of rum so had to suffer more than usual.
As far as the wife choosing me, we're over it. She knows I consider her parents just about certifiable bat-crap crazy, and it's not up for discussion. When wife asks what to do, I tell her to hang up. Any more engagement from me, and I reach for a drink.
Full disclaimer - my MIL is a lot like me, opinionated and hard headed. So, I just avoid conversations and things stay quiet.

Today was my last day at work.
I'm officially employed until the 31st, but I took a few days off
Had a christmas/goodbye lunch at my old job and a christmas dinner at my new job yesterday.
Starting my new job at januari 2nd. Very much looking forward to it!
But between now and then I need to celebrate christmas (which shouldn't be a problem!), move to my new house (almost everything is done, it's getting a bit empty here...) and celebrate new year (not sure how that will go, I don't have plans yet).
