To be fair I doubt Bill Gates had anything to do with Windows 8. At best he might have encouraged another version of windows.
Probably had little to do with Windows 7 either.

Anyone who says running IIS on 32bit vs 64bit will show no differences unless you’re using extremely large chunks of memory is a lying cur.

It's interesting as MS clearly states that except the memory available to the pool.

I should write it up but I don't know enough of the inner workings to provide sensible solutions or workarounds.
What was happening, though, is that we were getting regular OutOfMemory exceptions and memory access errors that indicated corrupted memory. Very strange. The real killer, though, was performance: when "Enable 32bit appications" was true we had a real issue with requests queuing up and bogging down the server. We were being spidered at the time so the effect was clearly highlighted as each server went down, whack-a-mole fashion. No matter how much I tried to (even manually) spread the load it was no use.
Even more interesting is that we only have 1 32bit component in use - a C# wrapper for a 32bit C++ DLL that is not actually being called (the relevant code is cordoned off) so it definitely wasn't an issue with a 32bit component itself.
So I turned off 32bit, switched back to 64, and viola - super fast, super smooth, no complaints.

So, I am working on an app that should show a policy document when a PC starts, and not let the user do anything else until they ahve accepted the terms. I got 8/10 of the way there, but there's an annoying swipe down that minimises an app in W8. I found C++ code which could stop this happening for a full screen app. I have W8 on my desktop - it works great there. On W8.1, it won't call the dll via p/invoke, it says it can't find it. I've found instructions that I need to make the dll part of my project, so I did. No dice. Basically, it appears in W8.1, I can't write C# code that allows me to p/invoke a C++ dll.

All of those APIs should be available, so I guess it might be a bug in Win 8.1 that causes this.
