First of all, normal is default. Anyone can fall into it.
Second, what's outstanding about being normal? Is it really some kind of acheivement?
Is there any way to interpret this argument as something other than rationalizing never leaving one's comfort zone?

Correct! But let's not throw normal people under the bus. They are the laborers who bring in the farmer's crops, the teachers who teach your kids, etc. etc.
But the people who change the world: The Bill Gates, Bezos, Moore (of Intel), Einstein, these are not "normal" by any measure, are they?
Both these types of people play a vital role in making society what it is - not so? Let's spare a thought for both!

Normal are the ones that keeps the society running.
But whenever there is a "catastrophy" happening, of whatever kind, it's the others that saves the day.
I saw a very interesting program on TV a while ago, where a psychologist explained why people with ADHD, bipolar disorder and so on, exists from an evolutionary perspective. It was in Swedish, otherwise I'd link it.
Apparently bipolars have the right mindset to become very productive programmers.

I know my mania served me for years in the field (like most schizoaffective people I was bipolar first, probably since i was a teen but i hadn't been diagnosed - it wasn't as common to diagnose it back then)

On the Internet, "normal" is avaricious, jealous, arrogant, self-absorbed, loud-mouthed, insensitive, childish, petty, and probably sorely lacking in attention to personal hygiene.
So I'll have to agree that it would take courage to go out into the real world, if you're that sh1tty a person.

Is it analogous to Average?
Then what makes average? Is it a mode, median, or the mean? Or is it that we are in a pre-defined range?

The only problem about 'normal' that it changes its meaning over time and over place... When my mother refers to normal, she does not mean the same as me or you... So what is normal?
I'm living in a community with normal and different-from-normal people - the only real difference is that the later group has a doctor-signed certificate about it...

I think that while it's true that what can specifically mean normal is culturally and temporally bound, the general meaning of normal, to wit, characterized by the behavior of most people most of the time isn't so much.
It all depends on how you use it.

You have to differentiate between: Normal for the Family, the Community, the Society or the Species.

The activity to bring food to table 3 times a day and provide a roof for a family may be very normal or boring to many people in the IT world with good job and nice education. But that is not the case for the majority of the people in the real world.
Heck even having a normal school/College life is a challenge. Many At risk kids will love to have normal life.
Student who is struggling or a professional who is below average, for them being able to be normal with others means a lot and needs determination.
So stop painting a broad brush and degrade others

all i argued in that OC was that normal was about not leaving one's comfort zone. That's as close to "degrading" anyone as that went, and I wouldn't say that qualifies. Furthermore, is it inaccurate?

No you did not. Because you assume that normal is not leaving one comfort zone which is way off the mark. Majority of people want to be in normal aka comfort zone and try hard for that.
And you also said normal is boring!!!
Tell that to majority of people who are struggling to be normal.

I find average, typical, mundane to be boring.
