Well if there was then it couldn't have been very much, otherwise I expect we would have seen those forums reappear already.

After all, traffic = revenue. I am not saying it's "all about the money", but a significant drop would need to be addressed (bills to pay, etc.).

Having said that, reducing the volume of nonsense posted in Soapbox has probably saved a few quid in itself Laugh | :laugh:

Yeah of course. I would like to think I would do the same too. But only so much loss you can afford to swallow.

However, if Soapbox had even been anywhere close to a significant contribution of traffic I feel this site would have died long ago. One hopes the other areas of the site are what people are here for.

My point was just meant to be: If it was a notable drop, something would have been done to correct it.

I agree, My only curiosity was if there a possibility that Google search shows Soapbox and Indian forum post for the useless stuff and after visiting it, people start browsing the other section and become regular.

Good point. I knew the place was toxic but I am not familiar with how far people go. If lines are crossed then the reputation of the site does become an important factor.

Still though, there are alternatives to moderating a forum if it was a big enough drop in traffic/revenue.

Anyway, I am just speculating. I obviously have none of the stats to do anything more than that.

Moderating's a pain - we have automatic moderation here which picks up on spam and some forms of abuse, but it needs human backup for verification, and that's a lot of work. When you think how many messages flow through the site on a daily basis, to moderate fully you'd need a truckload of moderators to review each and every message - and they'd have to be on top of the kind of abuse being served up in GIT, which I for one am not as it's a cultural thing than needs cultural knowledge I just don't have. And those moderators are all volunteers with "real jobs" to do at the same time.

Stupid numbers now, but if the site was losing £1m per year from closing soapbox, it might be worth hiring a mod team for £500k per year to keep it functioning. For example.

If the site is losing 50p a year... sod 'em. Just one less Freddo in the staff tuck shop Big Grin | :-D

IMHO, this section was never monitored. It was Full blown Slugfest in there and few members knew when it was crossing line and tried to bring some sense but Sleepy | :zzz:

The spam / abuse autodetector worked on it, but the subjects were so alien to westerners (and in the case of the Cricket Wars all sentient lifeforms) that most of the abuse was impossible to detect except to other Indians. And they mostly just got rude in return. Sigh | :sigh:
