I have convinced them to allow me to work from home - in Oz. Part of the conditions are that the laptop has no external email or internet connections, everything via the companies VPN. So no more CP, no more cut and paste.
Damn Richard I'm going to have to type your responses into my apps now. And no there will be no effort made to circumvent the edict, I won't jeopordisse the opportunity.

I have no idea if there is a serial port and will not even look for one, circumventing the policies is not even going to be attempted.

My restrictions are nowhere near as tough as you work with, mainly because by job is purely development, no SSIS, reports or that QV crap. Working offsite is going to be a pleasure despite the added restrictions. Last week of full time work for me

Oh, dear.
I am a specialist, my boss is a manager. I am hired because of my knowledge, and no-one is infallible. Sometimes rules are plain wrong, or the customer makes a decision that is going to cost more than it will ever return.
No respect for people who hide behind the rules, even if it is one of the rules that I enforce; no queries that aren't parameterized. Still, if you're too dumb to understand the rule, then it may be better if you follow my lead blindly as you are used to

I'm not saying the rules are not sometimes wrong, I'm just saying it's their stuff, so they make the rules, and to remain employed, we have to follow the employers rules regarding the use of their stuff. If at any point you decide that the rules are too onerous to work within, you're welcomed to seek employment elsewhere.
I followed the rules until they got tired of me following them, and they gave me increased privileges. Sometimes following the rules works out in your favor.

I was not strictly speaking "stuff", but also coding-guidelines and the stuff. Any stuff that ain't mine is probably going to be expensive.
Doing (or not doing) something purely because you don't want to get fired is not a very great motivation.

Meaning the rules there are "made up" and do not add much value. It is like traffic; we don't have rules simply to have rules; we have rules to make it safe and efficient. Sometimes that means breaking the damn law to save a life.

Yeah but JSOP is and I was, the original post is about network security not coding guidelines. You are not hired to secure the network (I presume) so you should be conforming to the rules laid down by the people who were hired to do that job.

Yeah, but sometimes the rules are really dumb.
All of our machines at work have McAfee Endpoint Encryption installed, which means that every time you insert a Flash drive in a USB port, it prompts you to encrypt it. If you elect to do so, it effectively bricks the drive (you can't use it anywhere else). In my group's case, the point of using a Flash drive is to transfer data between machines that aren't connected network-wise. Since I'm constantly copying stuff to/from lab machines that aren't networked, that prompt is a first-order annoyance.
I wrote a little Windows application that runs in the background. It wakes up once a second, and if it sees the encryption prompt, it quietly reaches out and clicks the "No" button. No muss, no fuss.
