So I've been sick at home for two days and today I'm feeling better, so I decided to work from home.
Need to connect to the office using VPN, no problem as I've got it set up.
I'm using Windows 8.1.
I click on the Network icon in the lower right part of the start bar.
I get this bar on the right side of the screen with all my connections (the Network center shortcut or something).
I click on my VPN, log in, and fail.
The bar now shows an error message, there is no "Ok", "Cancel", or "Back" button.
Closing and opening the bar doesn't get rid of the error message.
Nothing I do removes the error message.
The message is "Error connecting to VPN", it doesn't say how I should get rid of the error message.
I'd like to try and login again, but that's pretty hard with the error message in the way.
Looking on the internet, but I couldn't find anything.
Anyone an idea how to get rid of the error message (other than restarting the computer)?

I have no "Networks" or "Big blue bar on the right side of the screen" process

To identify and stop a process:
Download yourself a copy of Process explorer.
You can then drag and drop the target shaped icon, within process explorer, onto the window displaying the error message.
Process explorer will highlight the process that the target icon was dropped onto.
It's then as simple as right clicking on the highlighted line in process explorer and selecting Kill Process.
It also has a handy feature where you can type the name of a locked file into the Find menu option and it will show you which process has the file locked.

As a Microsoft Gold Partner I was able immediately connect the support team. After a long (5 sec) and exhausting discussion, the team came to the conclusion that the only valid resolution is to install Windows 10 7...

Error 720, Error connecting to VPN. Google that and you'll find how to fix your VPN, not how to get rid of the error message

Also, are you using the home edition? My Google searches point to various issues with that edition and VPNs that don't appear in the pro edition. I smell a sneaky Microsoft tactic with that one.

With the error dialog box active, have you tried alt-F4?

In works on whatever is active (has focus), not just dialog boxes. It still works in W7, don't know about Weight or When, Did you try it?

The other day I got contacted by a manager at the Big River, the online book-and-everything seller, who said my C++/STL/Boost background made me an ideal candidate to work in their office in Cambridge, UK.
Which is flattering and all, but I recall hearing they're a horrible place to work. A cursory search brings up a fair few articles to that effect, but also ones arguing they're not worse than other behemoths like Microsoft, Facebook or Google (mind you, the friends I have at Google are all very happy with them, so they might be an exception).
So I'm curious to hear if any of you have any opinions?

If you've got nothing better at the moment I'd say go and find out for yourself.
Looks good on your resume, and if you decide it's a horrible place to work you can quit and call it "culture mismatch" or something.

No, I've got a job I'm quite happy with, salary-, perk-, and commute-wise. I've worked on the outskirts of Cambridge (Fulbourn business park) before, and that was usually quite okay. This looks like it's closer to the town centre, though.
