One can learn to live without anything. It may be a bit more painful and takes longer but it will happen. We all do before the 90's.

Yesterday, one of the flip switches on our electricity tripped. It is one of the RCD trips and switching it back on it just tripped every time. So I flipped off every isolating trip and one by one I clicked the one. Yay, yay, yay, *BOOM*.
So the circuit is isolated and and everything else is back on. My basic lecy knowledge says switch off all the plugs, then try again. Fwoooop, no workee.
Now I'm waiting for Sparky to come round and find the frogging fault. My bestest guess is that there's a earthing f'up.

It is very probable. The outside power to the shed goes off that loop.

I had the main 63A breaker go off, again thought it was a circuit, turned out to have just been the breaker gave up. Went to B&Q bought a replacement, all good again.
It tripped again about 3 weeks later, thought no, surely not, I was offshore and the wife's dad couldn't get it to reset. They hadn't thought about turning things off etc. Evenetually after a lesson on conducting fault finding, they narrowed it down to the kettle being spaffed. New kettle. problem solved!
One of the breakers at the front kept going, but it would reset. but after a while tripped again. Turned out it was the PIR sensor on the front gate, when someone walked past and activated the sensor, the circuit tripped. The terminal box at the sensor was full of slugs and spiders, cleaned that out and all good again.

I /could/ try and find the fault, but as the house is rented and the landlord has to pay for running repairs of this type...

Ive seen nails used as fuses - really ! - wouldn't recommend it, could black out the whole district, as well as burn down the premises

I saw what happened after one friend used solder to wrap round the fuse holder in his car and that wasn't pretty either!

My Granddad did that, could work out why his flymo work for a minute and then smelled like burnt toffee! Amazed it didn't zap him or cause a fire!

I found one in a UPS (when the engineer was overhauling it) - shoulda heard the muttering and cursing from him - and then mgmt., when we had to shut down the ups, diesel generators etc to pull it - then surprisingly, once it was replaced with the correct device, everything worked as it should (it was actually preventing a proper switch over)

never used a nail (or in the house anything but the correct fuse wire - I am not that stupid)
However I have on the bike used the foil paper from a packet of fags a few times (wrapped round the old cylindrical fuse) - well it beats sat at the side of the road in the rain for a couple of hours waiting for the AA
You cant outrun the world, but there is no harm in getting a head start

better than walking/waiting for 'AA" or such - pity I don't smoke  (would have been handy when I had a bike that required that sorta therapy, at 12MD one morning many years ago)

Sometimes the breaker/flip switch just goes bad, rare but it does happen.
