My servers are constantly under attack from IP addresses belonging to OVH. They have NEVER responded to my emails reporting problems.

What do you expect? OVH to close those sites?! They got payed for it my friend!!!

Yes, I do expect that. The contract/TOS should specify that.

Probably there are some lines about that in TOS, but enforcing it is a different thing...

While it shouldn't be automated, and may require a review by "upper management", turning something off pending a response from the process owner shouldn't be a big deal.
The service provider has their own reputation to maintain and turning off misbehaving clients is a positive thing in the long run.

Except for China, Russia and the usual suspects, my experience has been that most attacks are from compromised servers. So I would like my Hosting Company to tell me of complaints. The usual response I get to my complaints is " thank you, we will tell our customer", and the attack soon quits. but in nearly 10 years of running my own servers, not one single reply from them. That leaves me to believe that the attacks are NOT from compromised customer servers.

I think everyone's servers are constantly under attack. I know when I go and look at the login attempts of my windows boxes there are always thousands of attempts.

I check my FTP logs almost every day. About a year ago, I got fed up with the volume and intensity of the attacks. Unfortunately, this is on server 08 which doesn't include a dynamic blocking mechanism. A year later, the hacking attempts are few and far between. 
I imported a list of all current IPs from China into the IIS/Deny IP table. That slowed it way down, but I was still seeing automated attacks, many directed at the Administrator account. I created an FTP account named Administrator with a password of admin having read-only access to a single folder with a single text file with some abusive content. (of course there is not real 'administrator' account on that server)

Also, have you checked out Amazon AWS? There are free tiers if you're looking for something cheap.

Ah, I didn't see that. Their website is a bit obtuse. But yes, the prices seem quite reasonable, certainly better than I've seen anywhere else.

For past 4 years, My contract job was always up for renewal during christmas time. All these holiday season was always a jittery time.
But after switching to Full time Employee ( same job), I can finally relax this holiday ( though my net income is less compared to contractor)
I have nothing major planned for this holiday but just having no worries about the job makes is a nice feeling.
I will spend my 2 weeks reading some books, watch movies and spending some quality time with daughter.
I am happy and relaxed.

I am (or was) a Permi and am now looking at a contract role, there seem to be a lot of hurdles that most seem to ignore, like applying for a mortgage, seems to be a bit odd, some will give you a mortgage others won't. Pension plans and the like...

Peace of mind is way better than high wages. 
If you ain't relaxed, you would get more exceptions and more time to pull to hairs! Rest is compulsary, and yeah, good for you to spend your days without worries.

I just attempted to go permie after 25 years contracting and I didn't like it ( I lasted 7 weeks and walked ) , when i was contracting the thought of my contract running out gave me an edge if I wanted a week off I had a week off, if I want to leave work early I leave work early - being permie has its plusses but its not for me I like the freedom and uncertainty of freelancing, you also get lots of varied work contracting

There's a hidden joke as 6 x 9 is 42 in base 13. I've always understood this to be part of what Douglas Adams intended.
Of course, it might be just that he come up with random numbers and base 13 fits!
