Damn!
I'm travelling, so I shut down my email client at home, intending to fetch the mail from my hotel. Unfortunately, I can't recall my password, and I'm not sure if my username is supposed to be just the name, or the full email address. Of course, tech support will be happy to email me my credentials...
I'm afraid to keep trying the different combinations I've used over the past few years, because they're likely to lock me out completely. This is turning out to be a trip from hell already. It started many hours ago, when after depositing travel money in a drive through ATM, part way to my destination I discovered that the ATM card is missing. This being the same card that I made the reservations with, I was a little concerned. I'm not worried about it being stolen - it never left my truck - but if I can't produce it at check in, I might not get a room. So I turned around and went back home, logged into various accounts and did some transfers, then left again much too late for my destination. I checked in, using my alternate card, but there's actually nothing in that account until Friday, since the transfer takes two days to accomplish. I hope that's Friday morning, not night, else getting out of this place might not be easy.
Hopefully sometime tomorrow when the class takes a break, I'll be able to search the truck in daylight and locate my card. If not, I'll have to rely on my inherent good looks, and dishwashing skills perhaps, to get back home.

From the perspective of an expat living in Asia, who has not visited his homeland in over ten years, this seems only one example of the lamentable predicament of most "western" nations with high-unemployment across-the-board, staggering unemployment percentages for younger people, decline of manufacturing and "blue-collar" jobs, astounding national debts, etc.

Knowing that the people around me here, in the Asian country I live in, have almost no social-support systems compared to western countries doesn't mean I don't feel empathy/sympathy for anyone, in any country, who can't pay their bills for medical reasons, or is well-qualified for work, and seeking work, but unemployed, or for bright college-grads who have no job opportunities, and leave college or university with very large educational loans outstanding, and then have to move back in with their parents !
Contemplating the phenomena reported in the stories above: the mind can only boggle; the heart only whimper. Was Horace Walpole on to something when he wrote, in 1776: "This world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel."
