They can, but how obvious is this going to be to Joe Average?

True, but Joe Average prolly never filtered images anyway.
I think their stance on cached images actually helps novice users because it prevents spammers from knowing that they've reached a legit email address.

It aint great...
Win7 64bit
4GB
500GB
Quad Core
Pretty standard fare all round.
However, and this is where it is sexy, It is clean!
It only has the Accounts package, Office, Thunderbird, Filezilla, Firefox and VS.
Nothing else!
I am going to try to keep it as clean as I can for as long as I can.
Obviously there will be odds and sods added over time, but no dross or dead wood.
It took bloody ages to get everything installed and updated.
(2 days in fact!)
I am looking forward to the weekend when I can get in and do some work on it.

Don't use it!!!
I fear it will quickly be load with heaps of stuff as soon as you start using it!!!
And don't connect to the internet! It's much more secure that way!

|
|

It should perform pretty well without a lot of extra stuff on it.
The difficult we do right away...
...the impossible takes slightly longer.

That sounds contradicting.
Signature construction in progress. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I just got done (just now) converting my main desktop over to RAID 1, so my specs are:
AMD Phenom X4 3.4 Ghz Black Edition (actually an X3 unlocked to an X4)
12GB RAM
1TB Main RAID Disk
3TB Backup Disk
1TB Secondary Disk
Windows 7 x64
750W Modular Power Supply
GeForce GTX460 4gb Graphics Card
I wanted to build a new one, but I couldn't justify the entire expense. The base hardware on mine is still pretty good, and my wishlist was over $1500
Computers run pretty damn fast, until you start updating them

Thanks for that.
Remember I have a day job too, this is just the stuff running whilst I am at home of an evening.
And VS took hours alone.
Then there was the office stuff, plus all the configuration for 6 different email accounts.
Probably about 12 hours in total.

Admittedly a lot of the time was spent playing Battlefield 4 as I was waiting, hardly the most vexatious of tasks.
BTW, the PS4 is Super-bloody-duper!
If you can get one, do so.

I probably will next year.
I have hardly touched my PS3 or Xbox in the last 6-9 months due to being too busy, so don't see the point in getting one now, probably wait till around easter when prices have eased and issues resolved, more games available etc.

On Wednesday I got my system at work upgraded from 4GB to 16 GB RAM. It's also a Win7 64 bit.
A fairly sweaty i7 CPU, but the 4GB RAM was killing me. It was sooooo slow when working in Visual Studio. Granted, the main workspace is a monster with 203 projects, but the extra memory has truly made a huge difference, so NotSoMad right now .

No McAfee? No Norton? Your machine is deprived of the very software that gives it its identity and purpose.

Along with the software to load, try configuring your network settings to use OpenDNS http://www.opendns.com/[^] instead of the ISP DNS. That provides a better security against malware and phishing sites besides a good speed in surfing.

This sounds exactly like my current dev workstation, except for the bitness, built in 2009 when Win7 was released...October I think. Anyway, four years later, and loaded with VS6, VS2010, 3 versions of Cyrstal Reports, 2 versions of Office, 3 instances of SQL Server, MySQL, Komodo Edit, etc. it still rocks! Load it up and see what it can do. I think you will be surprised.
This machine has broken my 3 year cycle for hardware replacement. Short term, I hope to double the memory and do a fresh install to 64 bit. It'll also be getting a new case and possibly a CPU cooler/fan to minimize the noise...but mostly, the same hardware in a new box. Good luck with it!
