It bothers me more when relatives get their pre-10 machines still get owned by some malware through some security vulnerability that was patched months ago, because they never applied the patch. And then I'm left cleaning the mess.
Consumers have proven time and again they can't be trusted to keep their systems up to date. So I'd rather see grandma have to wait for forced updates to get installed before she can get to her cat videos, than seeing her system never getting patched at all.

ha ha I hear that.
but you knoooooow gramma is gonna see that big update circle with the 10% and think to herself "where are my cat videos? I see that it says don't turn off your PC, but I really want to see those cat videos. I bet if I turned it off and on again it'll start working." FORCE POWER DOWN...
Steeeeeeve? Yeah, hi, it's gramma. My computer doesn't work, can you come help me, please?
I don't think win10 or any OS ever will everrrr solve the gramma problem

OT - really enjoyed reading your bio on your website. How did you remember all that stuff? I can't recall what happened three days ago; but I was born 20 years before you. And, incidentally, passed through Seattle (courtesy of Merchant Marine) the year you were born.

at first I just sort of started guessing at the years and then looked for picture proof.
just kinda wanted to show the younger programmers i come across what it was like back in them olden daze

Then grandma has no business using a computer. Get her an iPad.

What does that even mean? You don't think an iPad is a computer?

Close.
The term in general use is "Apple's reality distortion field".

Actually, Grandma might have an easier time with one for the types of things she likely does (play games, do Facebook etc.)

Yes, the grandma/grandpa problem will never be solved...even when we are grandparents! Just think of our future grand children going crazy trying to teach us the latest technology...the circle of life continues!

Conversation with my 92 year old mother:
Mom: An icon on my desktop has a big red X on it.
Me: Yes mom, it is telling you that the folder on another computer is not available.
Mom: Can you fix it?
Me: Try turning on the other computer.
Mom: It still doesn't work.
Me: Try remapping the remote folder.
Mom: I have no idea how. This was done by my paid technician several months ago.
Me: (Grumble, grumble) Ok Mom, give me a few minutes and I will remap it myself.
Mom: Thanks son, I knew you could fix it.

well for both win10 install (a little over an hour) and SP1 (a little under an hour)...

Technically, they skipped one, so it also might be they skipped the good one. Wrong move Microsoft.

I like your thinkin on that.
That MUST have been what happened alright

As far as I'm concerned the update went smoothly. 2 hours? Not quite. About an hour-and-a-half from start to finish (and that included downloading the thing). I have a fairly complex set up and was initially worried it might break something important. Nope ... Visual Studio / Office ... all my 3rd-party tools, applications etc. seem to be fine. Kind of nice for it to have been delivered over the wire instead of having to get a DVD or something. Maybe you've got a slow Internet pipe?

Yeah, it takes 45 minutes. But I got to keep working while it downloaded. I didn't have to go to the store and buy a disk. It updated without need for interaction, so I did some housecleaning while it updated. I mean jeez, what do you want for free?
Do I wish the update downloaded invisibly and updated instantaneously? Sure. Am I angry that I don't get magical wishes? Not so much.

Yup. Me too. Got plenty of other things to be angry about so why would I waste it on something that is just fine and dandy?

Hey - don't blame Micro$oft for you becoming an early adopter.

Early adopter? Yeah, that's me.
But we're on win10 SP1, aren't we?
So you're sayin all the grammas out there are early adopters?

You wouldn't get angry at a fire for burning your hand when you stuck your hand into the fire would you?
So why get angry at Microsoft when you install an OS that is still in the Beta stage?
