When I looked for those pictures the other day, I tried to copy stuff of Herself's XP/32 bit PC onto my 256GB USB stick - which I had formatted to FAT32 using a format tool, since Windows won't let you (it wants you to use the proprietary exFAT, which isn't supported by Android).
The fires didn't transfer correctly though Windows XP said they had, and I figured it was XP had problems with the size and used a smaller 32GB device instead. No biggie.
But ... I figured that if XP tried, then it might have corrupted the file structure, and if I wanted this to be portable, I needed to put it back to exFAT. I don't transfer big files to or from Android anyway, so it doesn't matter that much.
And I started formatting it to exFAT at around 18:00 last night. It's still going. 18% complete.
And this is USB2, which should be fast enough.
But come on - 90 odd hours to format a stick?
That's like backing up a big HDD to floppies was back in the day...

Something definitely wrong there... Even you asked for override the data part of the drive (and not only a quick format, which should take a few seconds) it would not take that much time... It should be done within a few (less than 3) hours...

Using diskpart...format fs=exfat , so you don't get a "quick format" option.
(I tried via Windows Format, and it just sat there doing diddly-squat so I assumed it wasn't happy and killed it. Chances are it was just too slow to show up on the progress bar...)
19% now ... in two minds about killing it ...

format /FS=fat32 /Q Isn't /Q should do the trick from the command line?
Or for diskpart use:
format fs=fat32 quick

I killed it, and did a quick format from windows - took microseconds - and a quick test says it works, so it look like it was just the disk check that was causing slowness.
A quick check with a 1GB video file says this isn't a fast device - about 4.5 MB/s write speed, compared with 75MB/s for SSD/SSD copying.
And it looks like there may be a problem ... a quick play of the video file stops at around 75%, and trying to read it back paused at the 84% mark for a while and then continues. A play of the copied file stops at the same point, so looks like either the device is faulty or has bad sectors. That would explain the slow full format. Damnit!
Chuck in the bin time ...

Forgot to check the Quick Format checkbox which disables the chkdsk run scanning for bad sectors?

Probably. A quick format should be sufficient when all you want is a clean file system. The sectors/cluster should not have gone anywhere.

That's like backing up a big HDD to floppies was back in the day... Memory based mass storage always was relatively slow, even in the days when it first competed and lost the battle against hard disks[^]. There are methods to speed up the access, like internal buffering, but the transistors for the buffers and the logic also take up space on the chip, so this is done only for reading data, but not for writing. A low level format should only rarely be needed.
You wanted to reset to file system? That's what a quick format is all about. No need to wipe and verify every sector/cluster.

For the actual copying part give this a try.

Well, I tried, but couldn't get the paste from clipboard to work. It's very possible that my image is in an incorrect format/size...don't know since nothing happens, and there's no verbiage yet with format/size restrictions...only SFW!
