This exact thought crossed my mind a few weeks ago when I had to meet a repairman at our rental house. The 5 y/o refrigerator uses (probably common) the freezer to cool both the freezer and refrigerator parts using a little solenoid actuated trap door system to regulate the temp in the refrigerator. When that doodad fails, the freezer runs overtime trying to cool the fridge, frosting itself up like crazy while the fridge stays warm.
300 bucks later as I'm driving away, I remembered the old 1940's fridgidaire that my grandparents kept in the garage that required chipping out about once a year, but was still doing it's job over 70 years later...probably still is.

So much for us being a first-world country. Seventy-ish years later and the overall quality of our products is less than what it used to be. But hey, at least your car can auto-park itself, you can see the contents of your refrigerator without opening the door, your car's transmission is now button activated (rather than lever activated), etc. I'm all for technology, but it's evident we are replacing basic quality with fun & cool gadgets. The latter should enhance the longevity of whatever the item is, not replace it.

We had transmission buttons on the dashboard of a 1960 Dodge Coronet.
So what's old is new again I suppose.

I don't trust ice-makers. I prefer to just use ice trays. I also get a feeling of accomplishment when I fill them up to ensure I have a good supply of ice. When I was a kid, we had a set of these[^] at home.

Plastic trays didn't exist when I was a kid. Everyone had metal trays. We didn't have iPads or CDs either, 'cos they hadn't been invented.

You are probably older than the word old then! And wiser too (than a lot of people, not the word old).

Never had a refrigerator with an ice maker. Still won't, especially after hearing this.

Why not skip the disgusting cockroaches entirely and feed the exes to the tigers instead?

There is almost definitely some sort of zoo rule against that, unfortunately.
Cruelty to Tigers, probably.

Absolutely, all the weird chemicals and other crap humans directly put in their bodies they're just not a healthy food source.
... add in that 'top of the food chain is where all the weird stuff accumulates' it'd be safer to feed them swordfish.

If you insist on putting weird chemicals into your body, you should at least have the good sense to throw alcohol in afterward, to sterilise them.

They should make the exes to go to the zoo to retrieve their mascots.

I heard about that one, along with the bear/salmon, and the nameless snake stunts.

Was wondering what the automotive industry was like decades ago.
I assume there was some transitions from:
- hobby product
- advances make a semi-comman standard across competitors
- a few dominating companies emerge, like Ford (maybe with including boom and bust periods)
- Tipping point where the old way is replaced. Minimum speeds on roads make Horses illegal.
- REGULATION. (i might be missing a few steps)
My thinking is how we can apply the lessons learned to some of the scaremongering with the big tech companies.
After noticing the headline I Want To Kick The Tech Giants Out Of My Life, says Wikipedia Co-Founder - MSPoweruser
In comparison, the main car companies, need to follow many regulations to 1 supply a car to someone. then 2 that person requires to follow some regulation. (I am so over simplified something here)
Was there a transition period where people were like "I don't want to drive a car made by Ford cause I don't like Ford or any other big company." Except they are much safer products?

I think with the auto industry you have it somewhat backwards.
Ford, as the dominant company emerges
Maybe some hobbyists
Other companies emerge
Government steps in with regulations.

Sure. I want bigger tail fins, bigger engine, bigger back seat.

The origin and rapid evolution of the auto industry was as much a disruptive, transformational, series of events as the smelting of metals (iron, bronze) at the end of the neolithic, as the domestication of dogs, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, as large scale irrigation projects for somewhat reliable production of domesticated cereal grains, and, more recently, railroads.
Instead of fantasizing about it, why not read a good book ? The remarkable book "the Prize" by Daniel Yergin [^], which won the Pulitzer Prize, while focused on the oil industry, covers the "automobile age," and its visionaries, tycoons, and oddballs, in wonderful, vivid, detail.
