Windows update is rather annoying me. I started an update about 8am and after the download and update it went into reboot and more updates. Then three hours or so in I get this elephant -

Undoing changes
Don't turn off your computer
After an hour I think it should have done it!

I may have deaded it. Goes through post boot "updating your system", gets to 10% and hangs.
Is there any way to stop the updates on boot?

Probably a bit late by then. Have you tried Safe Mode?

Ouch! My wife's HP all-in-one did that a few months ago. After a few failed starts, (assuming Win8) it should trigger the advanced options for restoring/etc. The restore points in my case were useless and I had to rebuild it from scratch.  Good luck!

I'm back at the beginning now, reinstalling everything. Maybe I'll wait and get my breath back before trying any more updates.

Since upgrading to Win 8.1, I found on a couple of occasions that restore points are generally useless. System Restore just reports a file "missing"!  I now take a regular image of my systems drive, so at least I don't have to rebuild the whole frigging thing.

My dad's laptop had the same issue, and the troubleshooter fixed it (corrupt service registration).

Plug the power and reboot. If doesnt work reinstall windows. The windows 10 preview is worth a look. It works fine.
PS: since years I use for my data another partions
