I've run various distros of Ubuntu over the years, but yesterday I spent the entire day with it attempting to do dev.
I normally run win10 and I have a MacMini (running latest sierra macOS)
I was absolutely amazed with Ubuntu with how similar it felt to the macOS.
I was also amazed that really everything I need (filezilla, Calibre (ebook reader), dev environment, etc) was available and installation was quite easy and as I said it runs quite well on this old laptop with only 2GB ram. amazing.

We have two systems to upgrade starting at 11:00 PM tonight.
Most of the people involved in the process are remoting in and the person doing the actual upgrade is sharing their screen.
Not the way I wanted to spend a Saturday night... we hope to be done by 1:00 AM or so.
Why so late? Because one of the systems is collecting solar derived data from California and we have to wait until after sunset on the West coast....

So you have company then?
Must be nice.

There is a glut of people on... my role is more support; a co-worker is doing the upgrade. I am providing verbal support as needed.

I'm in the WookieTab and went to send an email for the first time since I accidentally wiped it and had to do a "from scratch" re-install.
And I forgot to load contacts into Live Mail.
So, Chrome has my contacts via Google Contacts, and it's got an export. I'll try that.
This preview version of Google Contacts doesn't support exporting yet.
Great. Didn't know this was a preview, I've been using it for ages.
Go to old version?
Wah? OK, what-the-elephant.
Old version opens in a new tab, exports the contacts to VCF, quick import in Live Mail and I'm sorted.
So ... Google realised it would be a problem, provided an easy way to sort it that worked with a no-longer supported Microsoft free application.
Maybe I'm easily impressed, but that's damn good - most things involve a whole load more pain and hassle - and that's trying to get two apps from the same company to work together.

I've had a similar experience simply moving from one phone to the other and wanting to move my contacts over. it's a thing that felt like it should've been obviously easy from the beginning but wasn't. However, you are right, Google handles it really well. Backup to vcf then restore from vcf and you're done.
Great stuff.

Just finished binge watching 3rd season of The Leftovers,
upto last episode feared it was yet another show that needed another Season to complete but would probably be cut / not renewed. (i.e. like Marco Polo, Sense8... grrrr)
but no, end of the last episodethe story really does finish, the big question gets answered. (Of course still 'technical' how/why questions, but if you know the show: the biggest question really does get answered.)
Sin tack
the any key okay

Or, better yet, does anyone remember the special 80 column paper for writing out programs?

Since you asked for software, use SketchUp. If you wanted hardware, I'd recommend Legos.

My dear fellow emperors,
since we have been talking about it in the morning, I sent you a snapshot from Orion.[^] Please note that I could not maximize the number of android workers because of a software bug. The program assumes that I can only have 34 million androids on Orion, not 42 million. The programmer has failed Us for the last time. We will have him assigned to the first wave of scouts when We visit Antares the next time.
Now that Orion is ready, We have decided to build a new class of ships: [^] Please note the excellent quality of the technology installed, some of it taken from the cold dead tentacles of the Antarans themselves. A bargain at only three trillion credits each. With the android workers Orion will be able to build one in about four days.
Please excuse Us now. We have an attack to prepare.
(All those who have downloaded the game: Godd Good luck and have fun!)
