Ah okay. Yeah, I don't want to run an extra computer for that. I just don't have the space for it.
Edit: routing all my traffic through my dev PC is untenable for reasons.

Gotcha.
I have Pi-Hole in a VM running Debian 11 (full desktop and UI and bells and whistles) with 2GB of RAM, but could run on something much smaller / less demanding. At one point in the past I had it running in a VM with only 384MB allocated to it.
My net connection is so slow that routing all my traffic through anything is highly unlikely to overload it...

A $25 4k TiVo dongle would get you NF on a dumbed down TV. It comes with a very nice little remote with it's own 'source' button, and dedicated NF button.

that's an option, but I really don't like the idea of crippling this relatively new TV and then installing a bag on the side. Every time I use it it would irritate me that my almost new TV is hacked together with bubblegum and shoestring.
I'd probably be happier getting rid of it and getting a TV that works properly (in other words, not a samsung)

I can't speak for their OLED stuff - I have a LG 42" TV which is about ten years old, and an IPS 22" LG monitor of similar vintage (plus two Samsungs) though. Oh, and an LG soundbar on the PC.
LG certainly make reliable displays, and the picture quality is fine (though not 4K) and with only a small niggle in the HMI in that the monitor controls are a mini joystick tucked behind the monitor where it's annoying to use they have been fine for us.
But then, the Samsung kit has been fine as well ... two monitors, Herself's main tablet, Herself's phone - all pretty good.

My samsung TV was fine, until Samsung rolled a firmware update and deliberately made it unfine.

Have you tried a cold start (unplug the electrics for a minute)? Funny things can happen to a Samsung TV if it runs out of memory.
Anyway, this seems to have happened to more people than you.
Apparently the reset in the normal menu is a softish reset that does not reset all data on the TV.
There's a harder reset if you enter the Service menu, but to reach that you need a special remote where you can enter number combinations, you can apparently buy one at amazon.

I tried a factory reset.
This isn't a glitch. Somebody in a boardroom said this:
"Our Samsung TV streaming service isn't getting used. How do we increase "consumer engagement" with our platform?"
And some CTO or another idiot said "I know, let's roll out a firmware update that makes it switch to samsung TV every time you turn it on"
That's what happened.

I missed the second part of your post, sorry. Me reading this again got me agitated and so I started skimming. Not your fault, it was mine.
I'll look into what you said. Certainly it would be better than buying another TV.

But before you try that, try to just simply disable the Samsung TV plus
Cannot be removed but you can disable it.

I have an LG 4k TV (my 3rd LG in a row). Display quality is excellent. I don't use it as my main monitor (its main purpose is as a TV) but as a monitor on a mini-PC I have in the lounge. There are no issues with that. (There is an option to turn off overscan for the relevant input, which is important, and it remembers the setting.)
The TV has good built-in apps for Netflix and other stuff.
It remembers the last selected source. You can create "shortcuts" on the remote (you hold down a number for 2 seconds) and use one to select a particular source.
The TV's OS and apps have been udated numerous times over the years and none of them have been intrusive. There are plenty of junk channels and apps available but they're not forced on you.
Incidentally, you can turn WiFi (and wired EtherNet) on and off easily.

Are you wirelessly streaming your computer to the tv/monitor? I also have a Samsung 55", with a Dell Dock wired to it. No issues with it remembering the last source. I also have my Xbox connected as a separate source, and if it is the last source it comes up when I turn the tv on.

Is it a Smart TV? This only affects recent smart TVs, AFAIK

Yes it is. It even has that silly Samsung Channel, among other such streaming apps

Hmm, this started doing it *right after* a firmware update on the TV. I got notified of the update, and then it restarted my TV on the samsung channel. Ever since then it has ignored my last source setting in favor of samsung TV. It is possible the firmware update itself didn't make it that way directly, but knocked something loose somewhere else. someone else posted some ways to reset my TV. I have yet to try it, because I was having a terrible day yesterday and I didn't want to make it worse. meh.

Understood. Don't mess with my settings, right? I detest when services that think they know better screw up what I have set up...

All my TV's are hooked up via HDMI. My UHD monitor runs TV via a TV app on the PC, which is a (full screen or windowed) browser app.
I assume your provider has a "TV app"?
(Yes ... I also find "smart" TV's can play dumb)

I don't have a cable provider. I use streaming only, but I like having my remote, and I want to keep it.
