Quick answer here but I believe that they are the same thing. Windows relies on COM (now COM+) and as one sage remarked "Microsofts ace is COM, everything else they do is just fluff for their COM empire".
Naturally the word Components gets bandied about a lot. From my experience when they refer to Components in the VS.NET help and articles they simply are talking about the custom controls and components that come with VS.NET. You can naturally create your own Components for VS.NET and in most cases they will be COM+.

Is it possible to install VS .Net Beta 2 and VS6 on the same system.
|
|
|
|
|
Theoretically that shouldn't be a problem. Although there is no garanty that installing VS.NET Beta 2 will not affect your other apps so dramatically that not only VS6 but also your OS stops working properly.
At the moment VS.NET Beta 2 is in a very unstable stage.

I ran VS6 and VS.Net Beta 1 on my laptop with WIN2000 Prof for about three months without problems. I recently uninstalled the Beta 1, and installed Beta 2 Framework SDK, and have not noticed any problems with the rest of my applications.
You may need to be careful when you run the compilers to be sure you are pointing to the correct path, and that the correct CL is being invoked.

Yes but don't compile any production code with VB6 as some of the components will be pulled from .Net and installed on the client machine.

Over the next 6 to 12 months I have to write a whitepaper on .NET for my employer.
I would be grateful if anyone can point me at any useful resources, including criticisms, but especially anything to do with the expected benefits to business (broadly speaking we're a software house).

http://www.microsoft.com/net has info on this. Also, MSDN contains articles about .NET.
|
|
|
|
|
I was hoping for a little more than the obvious
|
|
|
|
|
There are some very good .NET related discussion groups archived at http://discuss.develop.com/archives/index.html
Plenty of details on the pros, cons and technical details of .NET

|
|
|
Thanks very much for the info. Not much to wade through, though

One of the better histories for .Net is in http://www.dnjonline.com/articles/essentials/iss24_essentials.html
Also - check through the archives of http://www.dotnetwire.com - there is an article about ".Net from a J2EE" perspective that is excellent.
I used these two resources and MSDN when I wrote a white paper for my company.

I am using Windows ME and want to get up to speed with ASP.NET. Is there any way to run ASP.NET on my platform? Should I try installing IIS for Win NT? Has anybody tried this?
'Get Win 2000' would be a really useful suggestion. But I cannot get Win 2K right now for several reasons...

There are sites out there that will allow you to build and play with ASP.NET without fees for those that cannot create a system in which to use ASP.NET of their own.
Just an alternative.
Cheers,

I looked around on the web and found only one free ASP.NET provider - brinkster.com - but they do not offer ftp access so I have to upload each file through their web admin interface... Not really convinient for a large project. Anybody know of some other free ASP.NET provider?

First I would like to apologize for not putting this thread in a more appropriate place
I'm really interested in .net, but I've been having problems installing it. I did post some questions on the microsoft newsgroups, but they never got answered. So heres the message I wrote:
On the Windows 2k (w/ sp2) I can't compile the samples (when it runs nmake I get
crazy errors). I also installed the sql engine. I also tried to goto the .net
framework samples, but everytime I try to load the page like Tutorials it saysit
cannot be displayed.
On the Win98 computer it almost finishes the sample build
I get a fatal error that says it couldnt find regsrv32 to reg a called
ratelookup.dll . I did run the corvars.bat in the bin folder, it said I was out
of enviroment space.
I also installed the sql engine on the win98 one.
Thanks guys.

Hello,
I write a C# editor using a RichEditBox (in C# langage of course !!).
I want to add syntaxic coloration. I want to use the Select(),
SelectionColor() functions.
My problem is to know the actual Caret position: where is my keyboard cursor ?
I found some function like GetCharFromPosition,
GetPositionFromCharIndex, etc., but I can't retrieve the caret position with it.
What for technique should I use to get this value ?
Thank you in advance for your help !
Bye
